Hey! Your not suppose to distribute Debug MFC DLLs! (MCF40"D".DLL).
I'm gonna tell Bill! :) A few old ideasJul 3, 1998, 2:17am
This would help a little with the seed object problem... but you really
need to be able to teleport with an object in tow! zer0 :) [View Quote] Reality is too boringJun 24, 1998, 11:02pm
What's wrong with just one more involuntary animation for each avatar?
That should do it.. zer0 [View Quote] Join Enhancement Needed!Jun 21, 1998, 8:25pm
Hey Roland!
Most people seem to keep "Join" disabled. Even the ones that use it seem to toggle it off and on. I leave mine on all the time. We need a way to tell before we attempt to Join a user on our contact list that they have Join enabled. I realize this must require an attempt to join them is made before the browser knows if their side is enabled or not (and it changes all the time!). Would it be possible to go out at initialization when the broswer is first coming up and hit each online user for a request to Join that is just to see if it is enabled at their end? Might have to have the responding end send just an Ack or something... because we don't want to really go join them... just define if it is currently possible. If that could be done, then the only other thing required would be to color code the check mark in the contact list... RED = Online but no Join... GREEN = Online and free to Join. Would make Join much more useful! zer0 Join Enhancement Needed!Jun 22, 1998, 9:51pm
Ok... no problem... one more color code for the Check mark...
RED=Disabled GREEN=Enabled BLUE=Enabled but Antisocial - request required :) zer0 [View Quote] Realism Sermon #2Jun 24, 1998, 10:53pm
One more thing that could make AW a little more real. We now have a
option to remove the floating chat text if you like it that way. It would be nice to extend this option, or add another level of enable/disable that could optionally remove the persons floating name also. Now your going to say, "How would we know who is who with it turned off?". We have one method now (right click their avatar) as long as they have hit the enter key during the current session. That's good enought for me! If they have not chatted during the session you can't see their name now anyway. But I can think of one obvious improvement to the right click method to see their names. Why not produce "Tooltips" (little yellow text box) just like we have for objects that have their "Description" field defined. Then you just float your cursor over them and ya know. I know this does not sound like a big thing, but it is more realistic to not have the names floating around. Any small detail to create a feeling of reality is important. zer0 Make this my default idJun 28, 1998, 2:04am
Sounds good, but it is sort of special... I think most of us are the
only AW user on any one system or AW install... Might make it a low priority for Roland. zer0 :) [View Quote] New Involitary AnimationsJun 28, 1998, 2:18am
I decided to start a thread on some good animations since I was
complaining about all the automatic crap. :) One new animation I would like to see goes sort of like this. You know how you find those people who have parked their avatar and are not really there. They have gone off to chat in ICQ or PW, they are busy sending and reading telegrams or whatever... Wouldn't it be nice if their avatar changed in some way so that as soon as you saw it you would know they have been inactive (no chat, no movement) for the last 10 minutes (or whatever time period is good)? For example, their avatar could slowly become more and more transparent until it disappeared all together. Or maybe it could drop to the ground and take the fetal position and have "ZZZZ" float over it instead of a name. Or how about the avatar goes into "Snow Crash" mode and you see the shape of the avatar covered with snow like a TV that is not on a channel (like the graphics that have not downloaded yet!). Has everyone seen "Snowcrsh.rwx" in COFMeta? Would be nice to know if someone was Zombied out... zer0 :) New Involitary AnimationsJun 29, 1998, 2:34am
Snow Crash.... Title of a book by Neil Stephenson (1992) which was one
of the inspirations for AW. The main character is named Hiro Protagonist and spends half his life in VR. Snow Crash is a virus that is a threat to the programmers who us VR. Cool book! zer0 New Involitary AnimationsJun 29, 1998, 2:49am
Here's another involuntary animation that makes lots of sense. I
described this one long ago also. When an avatar leaves the ground it looks exactly like it does standing on the ground. When it flys through the air it looks like it is walking (with the only exception being the bird). I think it is time to implement "Superman" involuntary animations. I don't have a problem with an avatar remaining in the normal standing position when it is traveling up or down, but as soon as there is motion in any other direction we should see something quite different. When going forwards the avatar should lay prone on it's stomach and spread it's arms out to the side or point them forward. when turning while moving the avatar should be on it's side in the direction turned (left side turning to the left). Not exactly sure how a flying avatar should land coming in at an angle to the ground... running I guess! :) Later zer0 Mirrors.Jul 21, 1998, 11:06pm
I guess none of you have ever been to the first Virtual Chat environment
Worlds.Inc produced... If you go to WC (Worlds Chat Gold) as a registered user and teleport into the "Glee" pod... go through the Door into the hallway and look for the room named "Glee". As you enter the room you will see your avatar in a large mirror. Fairly realistic. If you go into the mirror there is a sound of crashing glass and you land in a maze. If you turn around and face the mirror again you do not see you avatar, but you can see anyone that is on the other side viewing their reflection (one way mirror too!). This is not new stuff... very old stuff... it was even there before the release of WC. It is at least as old as AW itself! Later! zer0 Re: Auto Build Program ProhibitionJul 21, 1998, 11:31pm
I have no problem with COF making the rules for any worlds they own
directly. I also have no problem with what the limit is as long as it applies to all citizens equally. If there is a limit imposed, I do think it would be nice to have a refrence in "Help About" or where ever showing the current total of objects owned on the present world the user is logged into... maybe even an additonal count of total objects on all running worlds for the current Universe too! That would make it easy to accept and work with Roland! :) zer0 Security HoleAug 9, 1998, 10:48pm
I built systems for a small company that got lots of local contracts.
Usually those systems were superior to the systems sold at retail outlets and they never cost as much! There are a few basic things to consider when you buy any system(s), even if you are not going to build your system(s) yourself. If there is a name on the case you paid too much. If there is a name on the case it may not be as good a system as one without a name on the case. If there is anything at all proprietary about the system (non-standard connectors, special case and motherboard, etc.) you made a mistake. If there is anything other than the standard acceptable sub-systems embedded on the motherboard (vidio, soundcards, NIC...) you made a mistake. If there is anything other than standard BIOS/CMOS (any company Logo... etc) you made a big mistake! If there is any custom splash screen when the O.S. starts up (95/98/NT) you might have made a mistake, or might be lucky and only need to wipe the drive to dump the OEM version of the O.S. and install a clean retail build. If you open it up and it has a Maxtor Hard Drive YOU MADE A MISTAKE!!! Outside of these few parameters, you did fine. :) zer0 Security HoleAug 12, 1998, 2:29am
Exactly! I intentionally did not mention WD... but that is the only
drive I will have anything to do with personally or professionally. Never knew anyone at work or home that had a WD fail yet. Have the first 40meg that ran forever. Have each one from every upgrade at home up to the current 4.2gig that AW and the net have be thrashing for over a year. Still waiting to see one fail with my own eyes. :) zer0 > On that note.. did I mention WD always been good to me?:) > > HenrikG Citizen Descriptions...Aug 12, 1998, 2:33am
This is a good one... we could cover the first meeting basics you always
have to do... Male... 40 years old... married... 2 kids... etc... I like it! zer0 Tourists/World OwnersNov 7, 1998, 7:42pm
Not the filter "Swap" list I suggested long ago....
imagine a list of words in a user editalbe text file... like shit=poopoo hell=bad place ass=rear end ..... now imagine the browser filtering chat and substituting the user defined substitutes at runtime... easy to do with the code too! So now when a jerk starts using any of the listed words... he looks more pitiful or funny than rude... I would have a nice custom list if it was there to use. :) irc-like cmnd line interfaceNov 7, 1998, 3:09pm
