We have received the answer to Arecibo

Aug 24, 2001, 3:12pm
Any halfwit with a length of chain or rope and a 2x4 can make crop circles, if the field didn't have the tram lines so convienently
located, I'd be a little less suspicious of it. A single fraternity could've created those 3 in an hour or so, assuming they had it
preplanned and were coordinated by radio communication

Of course, getting them out of the dorms to do it in the middle of the night would be difficult

Simple, at 67 (I counted) circles to an arm, time 5 arms, plus one center circle, you get 356, and the chances of me missing a few
little circles in the single arm I counted is pretty high.

True, but I somehow doubt the intention was for 90% of the test machines to not take full advantage of the software with resources
to spare for compatability tests. Wait, I take that back, this IS AWC's beta test after all.

"edit"

Also, in your original message, you said creating files from DOS. edit c:/newfile.txt

On further evaluation of the Customs Aide's link, it turned up the following
guidelines:

-Please do not insult other tourists or citizens by use of inflammatory or
offensive statements or images. We ask that you refrain from expressions of
bigotry, racism, hatred, or profanity. Please do not harass other users,
including verbal abuse or personal attacks.
-Please do not engage in racial, religious, ethnic, or sexual slurs, lewd
comments, or generally disruptive behaviour in public areas.
-Public meeting areas are not appropriate spaces for cyber-sexual behaviour,
sexual orientation discussions or activity.
-The use of all caps is considered shouting, please refrain from using caps
unless you are intending to shout. Please refrain from flooding (continuous
posting of repetitive text)as this can be annoying to users.
-Activeworlds Inc. or its associates reserve the right to enforce compliance
with these guidelines, which may include temporary ejection from the world.

Now a thorough picking apart of Rule #1:
"profanity" is defined as
"Abusive, vulgar, or irreverent language."
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=profanity

I wasn't abusing anybody (Except perhaps myself), and it wasn't irrelevant
as it's a general chat area, so what does "Vulgar" mean?

"Crudely indecent. " is the only fitting definition that a search yielded
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=vulgar

Now, what about indecent? "Offensive to public moral values; immodest."
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=indecent

I have NEVER in my life heard anyone chastised for saying "crap." I have,
however, heard school teachers, clergy, and politicians use it publicly.

Now for rule #2:
Now - I can see where "shit" could potentially become "generally
disruptive", but "crap"? It's only a disruption if somthing is disrupted,
and nothing was. In fact, the GK's "intervention" became decidedly incited
FAR more of a riot than my initial comment did.

Rule #3 and 4 obviously do not apply.

Also upon examination of the same URL from Customs Aide that I referred to
earlier...

Please submit any complaints or queries regarding these rules to
info at activeworlds.com.

I do believe this is where the complaints SHOULD be going instead of to

agreeing with the GK's is bad

Apr 25, 2003, 9:54pm
[Going crazy off-topic here, but this is general.discussion]

One day there will be no reason to worry. WingCorp will have risen, crime,
discrimination, hatred and lemmingism crushed with unstoppable force (Read:
Military action commanded directly by the great Wingian thinkers), the world
united under a single flag, selective education - those not recieving a C or
better average in a modification of the current all-around education will be
forced into the "grunt" labor force, those above a C will choose the field
that they wish to work in and be trained in it for the remainder of their
education, and those with a failing average in the all-around portion of
their education will be... Disposed of.

New diseases that aren't immediately treatable will result in the
extermination of anyone who's infected as soon as it's known that they're
infected (Except a few research specimens) until a cure is developed. Things
such as HIV that cause mass contamination of the population will also,
unfortunately, be dealt with in the same manner, as it is much simpler to
eradicate it than to contain it, especially with human beings being so damn
stupid.

Under the Wingian government, social order and the sciences will be
stressed - and the public given full freedom to do whatever they want so
long as they do not A) Disrupt the scientific process in any way or B) Place
another human being in harm's way. The lengthy process of justice will be
shortened to just a few quick snaps. Regrettably, this will from time to
time result in the execution of an innocent, but ultimately NO criminal will
walk.

The world's communication lines will be restructured and governmentalized -
private corperations simply cannot handle the Internet effectively, and have
failed miserably at integrating today's competing standards.

At birth, every person will be issued three things: An IP address (WingIP
protocol, which calls for a far more secure system based around human DNA -
you have to lick your computer to log on), a WingIP enabled personal
computer (Periodic computer upgrades will be issued for free by the
government, and "Performance" upgrades made purchaseable at a low cost,
although the very upper tier of hardware will be reserved for government
employees and systems), and a voiceprint-activated 9mm handgun (As well as a
government-installed child-proofed security cabinet and firearms training as
a part of the school curriculum). All gun calibers larger than 9mm will be
restricted to government employees and organizations, as will will all
automatic rifles and "other" firearms, and 1-2 shot hunting rifles and
shotguns will be license only. Materials key to making explosives will be
outlawed, except to government institutions. Entertainment will be
regulated - but not for censorship reasons - in fact, anti-Wingian
entertainment will be eligible for government funding (Hollywood always
comes up with novel ways of doing things, and as such, we may find a hole in
the system by watching a movie). The purpose of entertainment regulation is
to prevent a resurgence in lemmingism - shows like "Entertainment Tonight"
will be shut down, entertainment companies will not be allowed to fabricate
musical groups and actors, and entertainment media must be provided
affordably.

Taxation will not exist, as the government will gain money like any private
corperation - except that it will possess every scientific industry and a
large number of production and service industries exclusively.

Money, as we know it will be abolished. Every citizen's universal ID card
will be tagged with a unique code which will correspond to an entry in the
WingCorp databases. Companies will purchase 3 types of credit from the
government to issue to their employees, and minimum purchases will be
established based upon the number of employees - serving as a form of
minimum wage. These credits are for life necessities (food, shelter),
entertainment and licensing (The two are grouped together) and material
possessions (Cars, more than the standard government issue computer, etc.

These credits will then be spent at independent companies or government
institutions, and then the companies will be allowed to either cash them in
or return them to the government for credit. Copmany credit will serve two
purposes - to provide for inter-business commerce and to provide a gauge for
a company's success. It can also be used to purchase services from the
government, as well as the credits to be paid to their employees.

And that's only the tip of the iceburg...

> Why the American education system? I hear people all the time saying that

The early American educational system uses an excellent, well rounded
subject matter. It's just the method that's all messed up, and it's the
method that will be changed. Decentralization of early education into the
private home, with classes conducted over the Internet will solve all the
logistical problems involved in the current educational system, but
introduce another. Social skills must be developed, and this will take the
form of one month of classroom learning per year, therefore allowing us to
use 1/12th of the resources neccessary to educate everybody using today's
system.

Legally, any living thing incapable of breeding with a human (i.e. not a
homo sapien) will be considered an inanimate object and property of whomever
owns it. The owner will have exactly the same rights to it as any of his
other property, and will be considered responsible for any damage his
property does.

> How will you dispose of the... disposed? Will you also erase their past,
> like in Nineteen Eighty-Four? Will you BURN THEM ALIIIIIVEEE? Or you

Special executions will be webcast - TV will be taken offline. Criminal
kills will be shipped to a disposal facility, incinerated, and then
eventually the ashes seperated into their individual elemental makeup,
bottled and distributed to scientific facilities. Special cases will be made
for bodies that havn't been totally annhilated by gunfire and they will be
provided to med students as cadavars. Those executed because they are
infected with a disease will have one of two things done to them. They will
either be irradiated and then incinerated, or shipped to a lab to assist in
finding a cure.

Erasure of personal history will take place to a certain extent - their
current records on the WingCorp systems will be deleted, and their accounts
credited 50% back to the government, 50% back to their current employer.
Their government issued property will be located, confiscated and in the
case of the firearm and computer, reissued.

However, massive data vaults will still maintain their records for 10 years
(Unless they are flagged as a special person to the storage systems, then
that data will be stored until 10 years after that flag is cleared).

Neither. They're simply a group of people concerned with the well being of
the human species above all else. Simple left/right policy issues will be
handled by a parliamentary sub-government with one house per region.
Although their authority will be limited in that they can't touch the areas
of crime and law enforcement, and that sizable public outcry over one of
their decisions can result in a general global vote on the issue and the
subsequent overturn of that decision.

Fishtank iMac

Apr 27, 2003, 3:35pm
Truly relevant to AW isn't it?

A few years ago, my father made a tragic mistake and purchased an iMac for
$800. It's never worked properly - EVER. So, last night at about 11:30PM, I
declared it deceased (It no longer even attempts to boot - even with an
external monitor). So I gutted the thing, pulled out the CRT and all the
electronics and only broke two minor plastic pieces - the case holds
together excellently without them, and you can't see them. By 1:30AM,
Apple's greatest engineering blunder was totally defeated. And I laughed.
Electrical tape and masking tape were actually present - a highly
professional job.

So, with all that taken care of, the next step is to try desperately to
recoup some of the $800 purchase price. I pulled approximately $250 worth of
working hardware out of it, plus some cool looking, but totally useless
widgets. Would anyone be willing to purchase a blue iMac fishtank on eBay
for a fairly low price - starting bid would be the cost of the lexan and
waterproofing materials, plus about $5. Shipping would be low (Compared to a
full iMac), as all the metal and the hefty CRT and non-structural metal
panels have been removed, and since the lexan is plastic - not glass,
special packing isn't neccessary.

I'm only going to do this if someone, somewhere expresses some interest in
buying it from me.

Yes? LEARN TO WRITE IT.

Then, once you're done learning the language, attempt to construct a
coherent argument that doesn't consist of "GKs are corrupt! They're
compensated! I SAID THEY'RE CORRUPT BECAUSE THEY GET COMPENSATED!"

And to shoot down your only decent argument:

First - those are the most vague specifications I've seen in my life.
Second, the first problem is known and has to do with floating point
precision or some such crap. Decrease max viewing range in world options.
The second problem looks like either bad objects, AGP bus damage or just a
random glitch. I'll bet on bad objects - check the texturemodes and UVs.

Must I remind you that AW3.0-3.3 also exhibit jaggies on occasion? It's
because of bad transparency implementation (In Renderware 3, not AW if I
recall). I'm not so sure what exactly going on right there, but if you're
