Yes. You should always have a password on every account and at least two
administrators - even if you're the only person that uses the system. The purpose of the second admin is to let you back in when you forget your password in a drunken stupor. [View Quote] Someone REALLY lost the plotMay 2, 2003, 10:51pm
AW isn't done in VB. VB is like fingerpainting compared to this stuff. For
some reason, I remember Roland saying that it's 90% C and like 10% Delphi at one point. [View Quote] Someone REALLY lost the plotMay 4, 2003, 3:36am
Ah. I avoid any programming tool/language with the word "Visual" in front of
it :) ASM!!! [View Quote] To all Voodoo users.May 12, 2003, 12:23am
I suggest a GeForce 3 Ti200 if you want a minimum T&L, or a GeForce 4 MX440
if you want somthing more advanced. A Ti200 still plays almost everything that's been released "well". If you really wanna go for the performance/budget ratio, I suggest a GeForce 4 Ti4200. Links to all 3 are below. 64mb GF3 Ti200: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?catalog=48&DEPA=1&submit=property&mfrcode=0&propertycode=&propertycodevalue=3101,3677 $74 128mb GF3 Ti200: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?catalog=48&DEPA=1&submit=property&mfrcode=0&propertycode=&propertycodevalue=3101,3668 $88 64mb GF4 MX440: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?catalog=48&DEPA=1&submit=property&mfrcode=0&propertycode=&propertycodevalue=3104,3677 $55 128mb GF4 MX440: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?catalog=48&DEPA=1&submit=property&mfrcode=0&propertycode=&propertycodevalue=3104,3668 $71 64mb GF4 Ti4200 http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?catalog=48&DEPA=1&submit=property&mfrcode=0&propertycode=&propertycodevalue=3107,3677 $107 128mb GF4 Ti4200 http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?catalog=48&DEPA=1&submit=property&mfrcode=0&propertycode=&propertycodevalue=3107,3668 $120 All brands are created equal in this case. I have to advise against a Ti200 - support for those is waning, and the MX440 offers comperable performance. This coming summer is when you will start being unable to play (newly released) games on Ti200's and MX440's at respectable resolutions (1280x1024) and full detail at full framerates Newegg is the most reputable and one of the cheapest dealers on the Internet. I have over $60,000 worth of orders from them and have never had a problem that they didn't help me solve (Although there were a few instances where I got so angry at the hardware and did somthing rash like running it over with a truck, and they wouldn't take a return on it afterwards). The FedEx saver shipping that is free on 90% of their items equates to approximately 3 days coast-to-coast. [View Quote] Ok what's this?May 11, 2003, 11:36pm
No. In fact, if I recall, the comments on that service in WinXP tell you
that it has nothing to do with MSN. Anyway, this service is useless unless you're on a corperate network that sends server related messages via the messenger service or samba's messenger interface. This should be the first thing you disable on a non-corperate Win2k/XP install. [View Quote] Ok what's this?May 12, 2003, 5:18pm
Lets see.
Disable: IIS. Messenger service. Universal Plug & Play (XP only?) *TERMINAL SERVICES* Telnet Indexing services (It supposedly speeds up searches, but it actually takes it LONGER to cover all my drives, I don't know if it has any effect on smaller configurations) Netmeeting Remote Desktop "Server" process (Unless you share somthing from this station) Note that I compiled that list from my XP Pro services manager, I don't have a 2k machine handy. Almost everything (Except Universal Plug & Play) has a legitimate purpose under certain circumstances. UPnP is not related to Plug & Play devices attatched locally, but instead across the network - which can pose a MASSIVE hazard, since the Internet is treated much like a network. The only time I'd ever consider enabling UPnP is if the machine were totally isolated from the Internet. [View Quote] LegalitiesMay 12, 2003, 5:20pm

I also use 640x480, but its because my monitor sucks ass. Theres simple
javascript out there to resize websites to fit whatever browser size the user chooses. [View Quote] > I myself am a lame 600x480 display resolution user. Renderware is almost 99.9% likely to be able to do this. Simply because renderware only takes care of... Rendering and closely related things. However, because renderware is so inefficient even on midrange systems, it'd take a varitable supercomputer to handle RW and AW code that requires server checks and local CPU time on collision detection (avatars) projecting whats in you're touch zone (if we could reach out and touch someone or fire weapons with a max range). Projectile trajectories... More CPU time to calculate where it moves to and then hand it off to the modem to send. Add into this equaion multitasking with CPU intensive programs like Winamp, and
IE. And then the usual complement of accessory programs. AIM and/or ICQ, system monitoring programs (Norton, Motherboard monitor), and the all important Windows. Seems that this would require a buttload of RAM and at LEAST a GHz of CPU horsepower, and a DSL/Cable modem [View Quote] > Question, eep. Hrmm, a few of those things are pretty pointless to have in the background while gaming (IE, Norton and Winamp) but I wasn't talking about gaming here. I was talking about AW integrating more gamelike features. IE for surfing the web (KILL THE WEB PANE), Norton is still pretty pointless, it just crashes itself (I thought it was supposed to assist in preventing crashes), and Winamp is very much important if you don't listen to the crappy midis and wavs in AW (such as myself. Now if we did away with the midis and very cheesy wavs, and replaced them with MP3s and decent wavs it'd be liveable). Nonetheless, it till takes HUGE amounts of power to work this kind of
stuff. [View Quote] > Which you shouldn't be having running in the background ANYWAY when playing 3D games. Any true gamer knows this. > [View Quote] EverQuest: 300,000 registered players - AW's futureOct 7, 2000, 2:54pm
Winamp is far more functional than Media Player. On my older comp that codec wouldn't work period. Cyrix MII/32mb RAM/Win95. Haven't gotten around to trying it on Win98, needa replace floppy drives and reformat before I mess anything else up
[View Quote] > Power? To run MP3s? Not. Remember, you already CAN MP3-encode WAVs and use them in AW, providing you have an MP3 CODEC, which comes with later Media Player versions (like from the last year or so). > > .MP3s are nothing more than MP3-encoded WAVs with special header info in them to make them unplayable on most WAV players. I blame WinAmp for this annoyance, but now even Media Player can play MP3s so most people probably won't even notice MP3 is a propietary format. > [View Quote] EverQuest: 300,000 registered players - AW's futureOct 23, 2000, 6:05pm
Ahhh, finally, someone has actually put a dath date on AW. Keep us posted on this, especially when they want testers.

Okay, chill you lame TAPT dude. The tourist program is absolutely
messed, it should work like this. 90 day trial per email address, no free email addresses allowed. *cuts from worldbuilders and crossposts to wishlist* [View Quote] > Superior to tourists? It's rather simple to determine which email addresses are free and which ones
aren't. Just nail down all the major providers (Hotmail, Geocities, Yahoo, Email, Teleport) and some other minor ones. Unfortunately, this gives AOL users a distinct edge-They can get 7 email addresses per account. [View Quote] > What would you suggest AW do to check whether an e-mail address is free? > They aren't going to keep track of EVERY e-mail host in the world are they? > One of the ISPs I use is free (ex-call charges). TAPT- Acronym for Tourists Are People Too
And we all know they're leeches, not people. I'd be able to stand a group called TALT [View Quote] > Ok, I give up, What does TAPT mean :)Imagine > [View Quote] ->> Uhh err.. possibility of getting AW 1.x? <<-Oct 11, 2000, 10:11am

January 1998... That was... 2 computers ago. AW was on there towards the end of
that comp's tour of duty, which ended in June '98.
