ASUS CUSL2 is availiable without video. Big mistake getting it with. Only
onboard things you'll ever want unless you're building a lightweight is IDE
RAID and perhaps SCSI.

Heh, not only did I miss out on the 3.1 closed beta but I also missed the
emergence of a new nutcase (agent fux mulder). Oh well, theres always next
time. In any event, has anyone treid running AW2.2 on an old 486 comp? I've
recently come into possession of mass quantities of them along with my 2
custom built boxes and the one that I've got out on the table waiting for
AMD's upcoming CPU which is supposed to be overclockable with only a
heatsink, no fan. Heh, If thats true I'll have mine running at 2.5GHz or
better. Soon as I get the 486s updated to Win95, I think I'll do some AW2.2
on there.

I know the answer but I'm not giving it to you just because you suck and
type like a 1st grader. Not to mention you have the same grammar as one.
Therefore, since this is a text based community, you ARE a first grader. I
don't give technical advise to first graders. I can tell you're either
american or canadian because at home cable internet only services those two
countries (and possibly northern mexico). In any event, english is your
native language. USE IT PROPERLY. If I were to turn in a paper to one of my
teachers with Every Fricking Word Capitalized I Would Fail Like Mad.

I agree that the testers weren't the best choices. It was based more or less
on favoritism than on technical knowledge (eep) and system range. (You'll
mostly find AMD Athlon varients with 128mb of RAM and an ATI video card in
those beta systems). What Roland should have done was gone back and looked
at the 3.0 beta and picked the 20 or so most competant people with the
widest range of possible hardware configurations (and multiple systems
wouldn't hurt either) if he were going to draft. Now if he had gone the
intelligent route with a closed beta, he would have taken applications
asking for system specs, testing experience (Someone thats tested for say a
major game like Seirra's upcoming Tribes 2), and if you know how to access
the AW newsgroups. Then he would select the best looking applications and
determine who would do the best job. In the highly unlikely event that an
incompatibility with hardware exists, such as a problem with the motherboard
chipset it would help if one could say "Oh, the motherboard is an Asus A7V
which has a KT133 chipset" instead of saying "Oh, my chipset is a GeForce II
MX." which would require an amount of badgering before the moronic tester
knows WTF a motherboard is and then in a moment of inspiration says "I don't
know what my chipset is." and it finally dawns on us that they bought a
premade system and won't be of any help.

Exactly. He SHOULD be there. He probably knows more about this software than
Roland does. He wants change. He also pushes the software to its limits with
his world. HEH, I can name several people that can do a better bug report
than whats demonstrated in some (not all) beta NG posts. Anyway, as soon as
AW3.1 goes to "open" beta, I feel that the uniserver block on non-beta
logins should remain (but possibly opened up to all citnums not equaling 0)
to keep the tourists out. Of course I can see this not getting past the
"men" in charge because they're after selling it and 3.1 is so much prettier
that they'll be more inclined to buy accounts if they can use the 3.1 beta
as well. This is OBVIOUSLY the wrong decision because theres potential for
software crashes and glitches (as with all beta software) that would ruin
the effect for the ankle biting tourists and turn them away.

Look at the beta NG. Young Phalpha is only one of the know nothings that
were drafted. Apparently Roland went more for community standing than for
knowledge.

You're batting 0 pal. CLOSED Beta. Do you know what the word "CLOSED" means?
Just because AWCI adds it to the upgrade path doesnt mean everyone can have
it. The upgrade software is how they wanted beta users to access it, and the
upgrade software can only access that one path. Be realistic children, One
programming mistake on Roland's part and b00m, your comp is gone. Tbird
1.2GHz, standard fan. Memory leak left over time. CPU maxes out at 100% for
20 minutes while you're away cuz its dealing with a huge swapfile. CPU heats
to extreme tempertures to the point where heatsink/fan can't keep up.
Instant CPU burnout. Using beta software is putting that $2k wonderbox on
the line. I haven't really read any warentys because my overclocking habits
void them anyway but it's logical to include use of potentially damaging
software as a way to void it on certain equipment (motherboard, RAM, video,
CPU, HDD). Think before you talk, twit.

Wow, I'm becoming a hardware Eep.

NEVER go to a global beta either. There would be a point where no experience

attempted to steal the beta software once before wouldn't get on the program

Well, at least you're not one of the incompetant newbies as nornny said.
Whoever said you hacked them is most likely one of these useless twits that
have popped up here since Juno arrived and spread like HIV through an inner
city high school. They only do it for attention, and will be ignored by true
friends. You, too should just let them be and not make a fool of yourself.
The FBI is not to be feared, they hear the word "hacker" 2,000 times a day
and maybe react to one that is filed by a company with proof of destruction
originating from a certain IP address. Then in the end, your comp is
confiscated, you're most likely jailed. Now, if you never hacked, it's all
cool.

AW Not working

Jan 20, 2001, 11:01pm
Sounds like you haven't rebooted in forever. Try that first. Then end tak
everything not neccessary for your computer's operation (systray, explorer,
rundll, rundll32, rnaap [My dialup networking doesnt work without these
three]) and then try to run AW. If not, run scandisk, repeat the above and
try again. If that doesnt work, try defragging. Finally, if that doesnt
help, its time to reformat.

AW Not working

Jan 23, 2001, 6:20pm
Reformatting an HD and reinstalling apps shouldn't take weeks if you make
backups. I DO NOT mean of the entire HDD. I personally keep CDRWs of my all
the .ini files that I have custom edited (fills approximately an entire CD),
all the large programs I've downloaded (400+ meg COMPRESSED) get their own
CDs, and then theres the last CD which has installers for handy little
things like AW, the compressed windows update files (including IE5.5),
DRIVER UPDATES (IMPORTANT!) and WinRAR. Saved games, etc. don't get backed
up to CD because I mirror them to another HD elsewhere on my network, which
is actually a pretty simple matter to do and if you do lots of singleplayer
gaming and have even one other computer connected over a LAN, I highly
suggest it. I run a 20 gig hard drive on this computer. I back it up once
monthly. I hasn't saved me any data loss yet, but since I disassemble and
reassemble monthly as regular maintinence (keeps dust out and lets me make
sure nothings been damaged or melted) it doesn't really make any hassle for
me. Making backups of one computer to CD would take an hour at most with a
burn speed of 8x. Out of 15 gigs of data, I normally only back up maybe 1500
megabytes (1.5 gigs) because that's all that's really truely needed.
Reformatting isn't really even a big deal. Quit windows after making the
neccessary backups to the media of your choice.
format c: /q
[wait]
format d: /q
[wait]
Takes a whole minute or two (BTW, thats a dual drive setup, not gay
partitions. Partitions=BAD). Then popping in the windows CD and floppy and
installing on a relatively mid range computer (32x CD read, mid range HDD,
Duron 700, 64mb RAM) takes a whopping 30 minutes. Then install drivers, then
UPDATE THEM!! and install the rest of your software, update it, and restore
the ini files and savegames AS YOU NEED TO USE IT. Don't restore everything
at once, it's just a pain in the ass to do it that way. By the time you're
back up and running it's been an hour or two. Certainly not weeks.
Installing your average software title from a CD takes a couple minutes.
Installing FF8 or Microsoft Office can take ages though LOL.

all the bloatware and software titles EXPLODED in size. They're perfectly
fine for light use printing stations. Of course, since AFM here isn't just
running a light printing station, I still feel that he should delete the

IMPORTANT YoU MAY HAVE BEEN EFECTED BY VIRUS!!!!!!

Jan 27, 2001, 2:16pm
I don't know. Personally the only attatchments I ever accept are JPG, MPG,
MP3, WAV, TXT, etc. and in the rare case an EXE thats been bounced through
my dad's work email where everything is scanned on its way thru the WAN
servers. I also accept these types of files in emergencies (deleting
command.com by mistake hehehehehe) from people that I trust and have been in
contact with for over a year. I've only ever had 2 virii. One was supposedly
in the EXE to a commercial DOS app and I severely doubt it ever existed
because it was the only infected program and I was not connected to the
internet (plus the fact that only the Packard Bell restore disk virus scan
found it). Then there was a practical joke played on me last year with BO2k.
Nothing more malicious happened there than a coupla teenagers playing MaStUr
hAx0R for an hour or two before it got boring LOL. I don't understand how
everyone seems to get a virus every week. I mean, I've TRIED to infect my
computer with viruses and couldnt get a single one. So why do news entities
make such a big deal of it to the point where people are paranoid out of
there minds and people get all panicky when their AMD K6-2 CPU overheats in
mid summer and gives them a bunch of bluescreens of death (not fun but not a
virus).

One more thing. GO RAVENS!!!!!!!!!

If it's that long than Roland sure is doing some pretty dumb things skipping

hands on a copy of it and can count how many massive, obvious bugs are right
there (similar to the one that made massive portions of AW world unbuildable
that was _NEVER_ fixed.)
