When will Final Release be out then please?

Jan 28, 2001, 7:59pm
I don't know why nobody except me and Nathan ever notice this but in AW3.0
at very large coordinates, the object placement code is VERY unprecise
missing my a few centimeters. Roland himself even acknowledged this but
essentially, we got a "live with it" response.

Why not have the client handle it? Just check all objects in visibility on
it's current citnum for encroachment AS it moves/rotates/does
backflips/whatever, not beforehand.

I have a half-done build at 30504n 0w AW (stopped because of the gaps), I
may still have demonstration objects of this behind it. The gaps are quite
L A R G E and you can't miss it (if it's there

Get your own damn NG/Forum. I don't want to hear about AW clones that will
end up going NOWHERE in the AW group. Now if it were better, I could stand
it. However, OGL support isn't going to make it better. Theres a VERY small
group of OGL supporting cards that don't support D3d. An upcoming AW version
will support OGL (3.2 possibly) and personally, I can wait.

Re: more of Roland's bad math (was Re: Movement Waits off?)

Feb 1, 2001, 7:24pm
[View Quote] Apparenly so. They don't appear to be created with any difference on any of
my machines, all of which use different video cards, CPUs, etc. At first
when the non-flush objects were brought up in the beta group, it seemed that
people with AMD CPUs (K5 thru Athlon at the time, but I can verify that it
happens on all Athlon varients as well) noticed it first and only one or 2
people with Intel Celerys encountered thems. It's DEFINITELY not hardware,
it's all Roland's fault. Computers can do perfect math. He can't even come
CLOSE.

Re: Rolu's bad example (was Re: more of Roland's bad math (was Re: Movement Waits off?) (note: ~37kb att))

Feb 2, 2001, 7:11pm
With my GF2MX card, the objects don't settle into place as severely. They
stay comparatively still causing seams to appear less frequently. However,
the large coordinate gaps (often more than a few centimeters) are the common
denominator between all my 3d cards. It's not video that's at issue with
them, but the actual placement of the object.

I definitely agree that a database rewrite should be the focus for 3.2. Of
course this means that backwards compatibility to 2.2 would go out the
window. IMO it's time to cut the fat and drop the behind-the-times users.
99.9% of computers for the past 2-3 years have shipped with 3d hardware.
Those that haven't coughemachinescough were sold to impotent twits anyway.
Rewrite the database and add T&L and such to 3.3/4.0. That makes SENSE. The
more window dressing is added, the uglier the ugly things become. Eventually
we'll have every 3d feature supported from old Voodoo cards to the NV20
(nVidia's next generation chipset which I personally prefer calling GeForce
3) but the bugs we bitch about now will be so obvious it hurts to look at.

I doubt he even knows what his video card(s) is. I know my cards better than
my lover and can easily specify everything up to and including the
dimensions of the heatsinks/fans and the adhesive/thermal paste used to
secure them. Not that you ever need to know this stuff, but you get the
point. aasmund most likely operates from a company computer and plays with
AW when the boss isn't looking, and then pretends to be a techie when he has
no clue what's even loaded onto his workstation. As for him being on closed
beta, it's highly likely. Only maybe 2 people with any testing aptitude made
the cut. Only 10 with any computer skills PERIOD made it.

Re: proof! (was Re: Rolu's bad example)

Feb 3, 2001, 8:21pm
In a couple of weeks? Umm? Isn't that a bit long to wait? If you know of a
video card which doesn't show gaps just tell us WTF it is. Saying "this one
has gaps and this one doesnt" tells those of us who care nothing. I remember
when the 3.0 beta first came out. At the time I ran a non-3d Cyrix MII 233.
Downloaded the beta and discovered that the gaps were apparently absent.
Then afterwards, they seemingly reappeared with a hardware change (FRIED
that comp like bacon). It was an SiS video chipset with a 3 digit model
number onboard an AT motherboard which supported Cyrix MII (Socket 7?). Of
course when I got back into the game, AW3 beta had advanced several builds
so the initial beta may have been without this problem. Also, the objects
all appeared to line up flush leading one to believe that it was also more
precise. Sorry for going on like this but I suddenly remembered this first
3.0 experience and thought it might be worth sharing since it is marginally
on topic with this thread

Feb 3, 2001, 10:40pm
I'm aware of the dual bug situation. Strange thing is most people tend to
ignore the existance of both tempting Roland to just leave it all alone. As
for Roland saying the inaccurate object positioning is a complex issue, why
the hell didn't it occur in 2.2? Why not just fall back to the old object
placement code which was OBVIOUSLY more accurate and independent of the
display (the object's coordinates are calculated wrong and therefore stored
wrong on the server and being displayed right where the server says they
should be). Why did he even muck with it in the first place?

rarely compared to other cards (TNT2 Vanta Plus for example). Gaps are an

how incompetent can AWCI get? god damn...

Feb 7, 2001, 7:03pm
Well, globally filtering Eep would be a bad idea as he provides useful
information between flame wars. Those of us who don't want to hear him
don't. We don't need your help to silence one of the few here that know what
the hell goes on. Moderation of the group would prove to be a pain, as it
has been before. You need to let people do things on their own, like
ignoring or filtering what THEY don't want. Censorship SUCKS. As of late,
children aren't as shielded from the outside world. The vast majority of AW
users are in this age group (or so it seems) with only a few that I know of
not being allowed to read the types of things that get said in here. It's
not like Eep has posted sex movies or anything. Just provided good
information and policing, which can get harsh sometimes. Theres somthing in
this country (United States of America) called freedom of speech. I'm not
going to say it's the law on the internet and that you can say anything you
want anywhere, because you can't. BUT, it applies loosely to this situation
because the only REAL reason I can see for your posting this is that he
jumped on your company's back for unreliability. Constructive criticism?
Maybe, if it were listened to instead of being brushed off as someone else's
problem. Let's face it, if Eep were removed, would we be able to have any
constructive threads with the recent influx of newbies voicing their
OPINIONS on factual information? The occassional one-sided flame war is
inevitable in any group. I can just see the replies the anti-eepists are
going to post for this message, but think about it this way. In a group
project at work or school (whicher applies best to you), if the teacher/boss
decides not to allow one of the people in your group not to participate for
insubordination, would you be able to get as much work done?

Feb 8, 2001, 8:45pm
Amen. AWCI's yearly $20 contributions and testing services from me are
likely to end if global censorship of intelligent people for "offensive"
comments becomes a common occurance. If one or two people get nailed for
being impolite or rude, whos to say I'm not next? Censorship, once started
will always go out of control. Movies now get R ratings for having topless
men (Seems like it anyway). On radio, you can't say "shit" without a fine
being pried from you station's wallet. Online, censorship is still few and
far between. However, it's increasing in frequency by the minute. Any
company that practices censorship for somthing that users could have done
(GZs of worlds and such where there is a heavy concentration of people being
policed by PKs is almost too much) simply doesn't deserve my money. I will
NOT fund programs that slowly crack down on my rights as an American along
with the rest of the world's people. If one company adopts censorship
practices, others will follow suit. Eventually, the world will become a
place where nobody can have an opinion, speak their mind or even think their
own thoughts for fear of being politically incorrect, being gently arrested
by one white police officer and one black police officer, taken to a mixed
male/female prison and executed in the most sterile and painless way as
possible.
