MS V-Chat

Jul 21, 2002, 7:41pm
Hi everyone:

I just downloaded a neat little program (at least I *hope* I did) called
V-chat from Microsoft. I'm wondering if it's worth keeping or not....

So far I can't even connect to the main server, which is
vchatsrv.microsoft.com

Anyone know of any other servers in the MS V-Chat universe???

Cheers for now everyone :-)

[View Quote] Not really. :-)

Though I found it quite ironic that, as I was traveling up Syntax' road
(facing West) while on my back to my hometown from SW City the other night
(I backtracked Syntax), there was a HUGE hill just a little ways west of
Ballodon City, yet there was nothing but bare ground underneath it.

I seemingluy recall a rather large body of water.rwx there. Mebbe Syntax
should've left it there 'cause if he had, this idiot wouldn't have been

Then too, this wacko sounds like he could probaby DRINK a REAL body of water

Though, I'll be happy to 'gram ya asking for that broom should I spot
anything unusual laying around along the Riverside Expressway. :-)

Umm.....You haven't seen some small, isolated sections of AlphaWorld have
you??? Tom Huxton, Indecoticas and I all know of one such place. Right
guys??? :-(

Granted, AW isn't a 3.3 world like AWTeen is, but just take the problems of
AWTeen and multiply them by a factor of AT LEAST two and you have
AlphaWorld.

However though, these "builds" (thankfully!) encompass less than .01 percent
of all the towns and other builds on AlphaWorld, which, coupled with the
fact that AW is only about 12% full, would make AlphaWorld ideal for
upgrading.

The problem is that certain people do NOT want to see AlphaWorld upgraded.
They *claim* it's in the name of HISTORY, but I'm sure even Mountain Myst
(Kellee) knows that this argument can't hold up for much longer.

In fact Kellee, wasn't it you who called for the REMOVAL of AlphaWorld some
several months back??? Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong...

I *still* think Al;phaWorld CAN be upgraded, but ONLY if people would allow
the axis to make this possible.

Please feel free on any of the details, however I stand by the base argument
that AlphaWorld CAN be upgraded. :-)

Cheers for now everyone :-)

High CPU Usage

Hi everyone:

[View Quote] This says it all. Laptops aren't really very useful for such grahically
intense programs like AW as they just don't have the horsepower needed to
run them like many desktops do. A Desktop lacking horsepower, like mine,
does pretty much the same thing (Mine is also a P4 on XP Home, but it only
has 128 MB of RAM).

Laptops also lack the monitor resolution capabilities that desktops have as
well. So therefore, you've got a double-whammy working against ya.

I could be wrong though, but I do believe this *could* be your problem.....

What is happening to AW?

Feb 8, 2003, 2:45pm
Hi everyone:

[View Quote] What disturbs me is the NUMBER of people who get on AlphaWorld ALONE. To
illustrate my point, there are now only 41 people on Alphaworld. How many
of those do you wanna guess are probably at GZ?? Five?? Ten??

Maybe it's due to the fact that it's 11:36 AM ET on a Saturday Morning and
some people are sleeping in. Maybe there are a few people on New AW. I
dunno, but one thing IS for certain, AlphaWorld's numbers are DROPPING (like
a rock!).

So, WHY am I building there you say??? Maybe its to have a place of my own
to chat WITHOUT having to endure the expense of owning a world. But
Hamsterville will soon be open, in earnest, to builders (it's already listed
on UTN). One can only hope that AWI will have the sense to allow tourists
(WITHOUT building rights, of course) back on (what will soon be known as)
the old AW. I'd hate to think that nearly a year's worth of building was
somehow all in vain. :-(

Anyhow....Just my opinion FWIW.....

[AWNews] Tourist Poll

May 3, 2003, 1:31am
Hi everyone:

[View Quote] It just goes to show how QUICKLY AlphaWorld was practically abandoned at the
Corporate level by the old AWCorp and was left that way when AWI took over
last year.... :-(

> Besides that I only see the community getting smaller and the amounts of
> worlds going down.... weird... Well I'll keep watching the moving
clouds
> we have nowadays, no-one left to talk to anyway...

If ya go about 30-35 miles (or roughly 5000 meters) to the North, you just
might catch ME building away in Hamsterville. :-)

BTW....Out of curiosity, here's a couple math questions to challenge the
mathmeticians amongst us (and to jog my now-half-mushrrom of a brain with).

1). How many meters are there in a mile?
2). To post a sign announcing mileage between two towns using an oddball
direction (such as NW), I assume I add up the total mileage in both
directions and divide by 2. Am I correct on this?

The reason I ask this is becuase I have a sign at the very southern tip of
Blankaborg and I would love VERY MUCH to convert the distance in meters to
distance in miles to keep it AT LEAST fairly consistent with the other signs
in the Blankaborg Metro area. :-)

Thanks a bunch in advance for the answers & Cheers for now :-)

[View Quote] Nevertheless, I don't think it's much of a secret that AlphaWorld is HARDLY
AWI's "Pride & Joy" world today like it was just a couple years ago. Having
said that, I fail to see why AWI doesn't allow tourists onto AW (even
without building rights). Hopefully the results of this poll will force
them to revisit the issue as I think AWI will soon find out that allowing
tourists back onto AW, but WITHOUT building rights, isn't as bad of an idea
as they might think it is now.

Just my opinion.... :-)

How Syntax Got "Lost"....

Jul 3, 2003, 8:35pm
Hi everyone:

The following is an account of a true story. Hiccup bags are STRONGLY
advised. :-) |*ROTFLMAO!*

Once upon a time yesterday as I was busy working on my new pub in the Old
Cedar Town District of Hamsterville, I suddenly got a SURPRISE visit from
Syntax. His reason was that he "got lost".

Now KNOWING that the Syntax I *thought* I knew would know hot to get back to
SW City from practically ANYWHERE, I was thinking "Hmm..." and eventually
told me to follow me. The first time around, he heard Comit calling him and
he left. I went back to what I was doing.

TWENTY MINUTES LATES, he comes back but THIS TIME he had a friend with him.
He tells he he "got lost AGAIN" and needed help in getting back to SW City.

After getting MY OWN bearings straight (afterall I *was* working on getting
the TV stations set up in the pub), I *finally* managed to get as far as
Intertown Highway 55 at Retsmah Road East. I told him he'd eventually run
into the Riverside Expressway which will take him to Syntax Road going into
SW City. So I sent him on his way and | went back to the pub.

A few minutes after I got back to the pub, I he telegrammed me asking which
way should he turn. IN MY OWN SELF-ADMITTED STUPIDITY, I said "Hang a
right" thinking that if I was wrong he'd just turn around. I then told him
that he'd be taking the scenic route back. He responded with something to
the effect that he thinks he's lost AGAIN. I thought to myself THREE
TIMES - IN ONE DAY??? IMPOSSIBLE. So I asked him which direction he was
going. He said NW.

I told him that doersn't sound right and asked to let me join him (I
remembered later on that if you were to hang a right at Intertown Highway 55
& Riverside Expressway, he WOULD be headed back to the place HE WAS TRYING
TO LEAVE). When I joined him, guess where he was...

WAY OVER on the WEST side of town in the EMBASSY PARK DISTRICT.

By THIS time, I was asking myself HOW is it that this guy could get himself
SO LOST that he couldn't even get back to SW City by highway - EVEN IF HE
WAS ON THE RIGHT ONE?? It just seemed like it was a weird dream!!

Anyway, I get him turned around AGAIN (this time we WERE on the Riverside
Expressway) when I get a telegram from BlankaM announcing her return.

Knowing that I had to catch her while she was online so she and I could
discuss the building of her hotel at Hamsterville GZ (she's online like once
in a blue moon), I didn't have time to help poor Syntax find his way back to
the city he calls home, so I took him to where he could find a teleporter.

I took him to the Bus Station on Harborview Avenue.

I even rode my bike right on up to the stop and told him he could POSSIBLY
miss THIS. He didn't. He was back in SW City and I was, after a few
minutes, on my way to Hamsterville GZ where I would meet up with the
virtually lovely BlankaM to discuss her hotel. :-)

I telegrammed him later reminding him that he was ON HIS OWN when it came to
finding his virtual private residence from the SW City Bus Terminal as I
know how to navigate my way around SW City about as well as Syntax quite
obviously knows how to navigate through Hamsterville. :-) *LOL!*

Now mind you, I'm NOT angry that this happened. But I was a *little*
perplexed. I later realized that this would get quite a few laughs once
posted to message boards and newsgroups. :-) So Syntax....Don't say I
didn't warn ya. :-)

Enjoy the laughs everyone :-)

Cheers for now :-)

How Syntax Got "Lost"....

Hi everyone:

[View Quote] Uh huh. Yeah right. IF this is true then HOW is it you were still able to
remember the event in our conversation some 24 hours LATER?!?!? :-P :-)

And to answer your question Baro, 1). I don't typically keep the Bus Station
in my TELEPORTS section because I generally don't go anywhere that I can't
get to via road and 2). We were actually CLOSER to the highway which runs
all the way up syntax Road going into SW City via the ocean than we were to
the Bus Station, which is why I pointed him in that direction (BTW
Vornox....Did you FINALLY build a bridge from there and string it across the
ocean so road travel into SW City proper would be possible or is that still
a WIP? Just wondering... :-)). 3). I usually don't encounter "lost"
people on an everyday basis (thank goodness!) :-)

protection for your computer

Aug 12, 2003, 2:52am
Hi everyone:

[View Quote] Given the IQ of much of today's society, this is often easier said than
done....

> I do not run any background virus scanner but still
> caught each virus before it became active. I scan

I run the AV program from http://www.grisoft.com/ It's an *excellent*
little program that scans my email and newsgroups posts (both incoming and
outgoing) for viruses and other little things which shouldn't be there and
(ususally) does a very good job. I have it set where it automatically
updates itself and it does a daily overnight scan of my computer at an hour
in which I'm most likely to either be asleep or headed to bed. :-)

It's also quick at notifying me if I've somehow downloaded a virus (I don't
even need to open it for my AV program to kick in) or a trojan in my email
and tells me how to get rid of it. It takes about a half hour to scan my
whole system, but it gets the job done. :-)

This program has bailed me out more than once. CHECK IT OUT.

Well.....Between the NGs, the various AW-related websites, and the VR TV
networks, there really shouldn't be *any* excuse why people shouldn't be
aware of what's going on in the AW Universe, whether the news is good or bad
IMO...

Just my $.02 worth...

Cheers for now :-)
