No no no, Goob..... Any possesive ending in the letter "s" is always
punctuated with just the apostrophe at the end of the word ( ActiveWorlds' ) ActiveWorlds's is incorrect.. that would be considered a conjunction of ( ActiveWorlds is ), which also would be incorrect btw. And any noun, (person, place or thing) which "ActiveWorlds" IS, is correctly used AS a possesive.... * thinks..... english teacher would be shocked I actually REMEMBER any of this crap* ;O) JB [View Quote] The Video4 is out!Sep 26, 2002, 9:08am
Terrific job Pine !!! :O) Tres' Cool !
A high res version of that with some of the greater AW worlds' stuff, plus some of the more elaborately built worlds would make a pretty neat commercial ! [View Quote] The Video4 is out!Sep 26, 2002, 8:20pm
Well, you're mostly correct. I neglected to make the distinction between a
SINGULAR or a PLURAL possessive noun and that the "rules" are sort of ambiguous.... My goof.... Taken from : http://junketstudies.com/rulesofw/faqs.html see FAQ No. 2...... When indicating possession, should an apostrophe come before or after the "s"? This rule varies a bit. Any possessive singular noun takes " 's ", even if the noun ends in "s". (ex. Carlos's, Louis's) Any possessive plural nouns takes " s' " (ex. the various activists' suggestions). However, Warriner's English Grammar and Composition adds that singular words of more than one syllable that end in "s" are sometimes given just an apostrophe (not " 's ") to avoid too many "s" sounds. An exception to this rule is the possesive form of "it", which takes only and "s" with no apostrophe. See below for more info. Here's a difficult side-issue: What about a name like "Louis"? This name may be pronounced "Loo-is" or "Loo-ie". In the first case, I'd go with Louis's, and in the second I'd go with Louis'. The apostrophe rule is not as unambiguous as we might like in this case, but I doubt that either approach would lead a reader into confusion. As you see, both ways ARE correct, except the MORE correct way would be to use Activeworlds' as the possessive singular noun, since it "sounds" incorrect, in common speech (too many "s" sounds, as stated above) , which is the goal in writing. To be read as if someone is speaking the text. I think the REALLY important point is.......... Does anyone here truly care this much ? ;O) JB "Reader of Goober's entertaining sig's" [View Quote] The Video4 is out!Sep 28, 2002, 12:08pm
In the video, you're correct, it should have just been "Activeworlds" which
IS the name of the Company/Program ... I was just talking about the " 's " used in possessive nouns.... Christ, the "eepisnness" is contageous in here *shutting up now, b4 I catch it, Hmm may be too late* ;O) So Pineriver made a typo in it.... does anyone REALLY care ? Jbell,
A company doesn't have to register with the government in EVERY state, to be in business legally and/or legitimately. Only in the state in which the company is located. Each state has it's own legalities concerning how and where they require a business to be registered, licensed, insured, etc. And quite often those individual states have very different requirements. You may think this dash enterprises inc. sounds cheesy and who knows, your opinions may very well be accurate, but they are exactly that, opinions...... The "Inc." on the end of the name shows you they're an incorporation ( legitimate business ) under the law in whichever state they're based. At least they SHOULD be..... But that has nothing to do with it. A quick check on a "whois" server gives you all the info as to whom the domain belongs to. You could then call the respective state's appropriate licensing authority to determine if the company was indeed valid. This will often be the local dept. of commerce, states attorney general's office, or whomever. Anyways, I think the "Insanity Syndrome" has many people a bit suspicious here...... which isnt exactly a bad thing..... but we can't just jump all over everyone in here that represents some unheard of company. I've never heard of them either, but they may very well be up to snuff... might be some annoying advertising based thing, but that is their choice... we don't have to like it for it to be legal. Chris, an SEC filing has to do with companies that fall under the scope of
Securities ( bonds, etc ) and Exchange ( Stocks and such ) hence the name Securities and Exchange comission...... This isn't something every business in the country does, or is required to do.... If it was a publicly traded co. on the US Stock Exchange, then they'd have to submit a filing...... Just because they're a business does not require them to do so, or provide the public with their financial reports, etc. JB [View Quote] NEW AlphaWorld - Could It Be???Oct 25, 2002, 10:34pm

AW isnt goint to retire anything..... havent since 1995 and I highly doubt
they're going to start now..... Think seriously for a moment about the huge number of citizens who have builds there ( in the TENS of thousands, including NAC builds ) I doubt they'd be so heartless as to delete all that...... plus it's called "history" Alpha World is just that.... the FIRST world....been there since the inception and I'm pretty sure the reason it still IS here, has more to do with that alone, than anything else. It's a showcasing of the company's product's evolution. To think that they'd just delete it, after keeping it all these years, is just ridiculous... > > The major problem AW will encounter during such a migration process will be builds > (and in some cases entire towns) created by people who are no longer citizens, but > have yet to make the NAC list. But then too, between AWCC and the AWHS, the builds > could be placed under the auspicies of either group. > > Alternatively, AW could also award such builds to the cit who owns the nearest > adjacent builds and/or sponsor and "Adopt-A-Build" program whereas cits can place > their name into the ring to "adopt" or be "awared" such a build much like WebRing > does (or claims it does) with site rings which have been abandoned. > > In any case, the build would have to meet a set criteria (or a portion thereof) so > that builds owned by cits whose cit expired less than a certain period of time don't > wind up losing their builds simply due to credit card problems encountered during the > renewal process. In other words, the cit would have to have been expired for SEVERAL > MONTHS with no hope of renewal before such a build makes the adoption list. > > An adoption program would not only preserve the build, but also give current cits the > ability to improve on them as needed too. :-). I personally wouldnt want someone else taking ownership of my hard work and many hours spent building / learning TO build, in Alpha... Sure..... see a great build, grab it for yourself.... sheesh..... think about it....... I'd rather see it gone, or go NAC than have some other knucklehead take "ownership" of my old builds If it's such a great build, why should someone else who did nothing, be allowed to put their name on it.......... *rolls eyes* > > Okay gang....I'm through now. I've read all the dissent concerning the CY awards, and the inclusion of gor worlds into the 'family oriented' side of
activeworlds, etc. etc. Let me preface this by saying I have no particular animosity towards anyone who wishes to participate in 'gorean' worlds or behavior....... I personally, have a few very good friends here that do. I do not consider them any less a person that myself, nor do I treat them any differently. I love them just the same, tho I do wish they didn't engage in this, as I feel it is degrading to women AND men....... to act as a 'slave' is sad, but to feel a need to enslave another, sadder yet..... but that's my own personal convictions.... In my humble opinion, there IS only one simple (not easy, but simple) solution to the issue of the CY awards and children being involved. The way I see it, there is no other way around it other than to have two seperate awards / award ceremonies. One for the mainstream worlds, including so-called 'teen' worlds, AW owned worlds, etc. Another for the 'adult' worlds ( x rated, gor, what have you ) This, of course, will make certain people feel alienated, but unfortunately so do many such situations in real life. The reality of it is, the majority of the citizens in activeworlds are not active in adult or gor worlds. What I propose / support is to have two different awards / ceremonies. Now some here may say this is segregationist, bigoted, or whatever term you like, but it's just plain reality........ If the CY's allow the inclusion of underage persons in it's committees, ceremonies, awards, etc. they ( and we ) have a responsibility to set some standards as to content and behaviour that will be allowed....... Some say no, but children grow up fast enough already..... I feel that if you decide to live an 'adult / gorean ' lifestyle here, that's your choice but, when you make that choice, you must realize that it's not in line with the rest of the community and will never be so....... therefore if you wish to be included in the community, you have no choice but to give and take. It's just not realistic to consider disallowing underage access to the CY awards, committees, etc. As all have said, this is about community....... and although the people in the adult / gor communities are still very much a part of the 'ActiveWorlds' community, their decision to participate in an adult online lifestyle here, precludes them from being included in certain things. Some may feel this unfair, but life is unfair sometimes. Some may call this Discriminatory, racist, bigoted, whatever you like, but the essence of this is the fact that if you DO participate in an 'adult' lifestyle here, is your CHOICE.... no one has forced you to partake of this, You decided...... and you must accept the consequences and / or benefits OF your decision..... plain and simple. You simply can't call this bigoted or racist....... you have no choice if you're black, white, too short, too poor, too whatever... If you're singled out for such things, it is very wrong and just plain unacceptable. But, you made the choice to do the things you do here, and to say that you shouldnt be discriminated against or singled out is just not realistic...... YOU made the choice....... YOU must live with the repercussions......... If you decide to have an 'adult / gor' type world, You have made that choice again... and nothing will change that, you were not forced. I mean, think of it this way....... if you come into the newsgroups and flame everyone in sight, calling names, etc. thats your choice, but you can't say it's wrong or blame the rest of the people here if they think you're an ass, or treat you rudely because of it..... you made the choice..... and you must live with it. I'm not saying treat anyone who prefers an adult lifestyle here differently or with any less respect...... as I dont and wouldnt do it myself. You can ask my gorean friends.... But to have two seperate awards / ceremonies is just not that bad.... sure, it's more work, but if you want to be recognized by your peers or award their hard work, then you'll do it...... If you have an adult world thats built beautifully, then kudos to you ! we all know how much work and thought is put into such a thing.... but the minute you decide to make that an adult world, you 'change the rules' so to speak.... It's your decision, you made it, and you have to live by that decision..... like it or not......... To sum it all up, I feel there should be two seperate awards ( CY & Adult CY ) there just IS no other simple way to remedy this. Not everyone will be happy about it, feel it's fair or whatever..... on either side of the arguement...... But as I said before, Life is not fair...... we all must live with things we don't like every day, and this really is no different..... Actions and choices have consequences...... and when you make a choice, you have no choice but to live with them........ like it or not.... Hopefully people will read this and not start another flame war over it, as that just does not accomplish a thing....... Instead lets embrace the fact that there's different kinds of people here, with different likes / dislikes and try to accept those....... and to accommodate those differences....... Essentially, Let's bury the hatchet and work on a solution, instead of fueling the fire and splitting up the community even further......... Two Awards just isn't so bad, If you win, you'll still have the respect and admiration of your peers for your determination and hard work...... And...... you just might get a little more respect from many, for exhibiting the maturity necessary to accept the things that come with your chioces... Something to think about..... agreed... if you cant be mature enough to control what you type, which you certainly can't do as fast as you might speak the same
words, then you're a pretty sad case, I think..... it's one thing to slip once in a while verbally, but there's just no excuse when you have plenty of time before you hit that enter key........ some ppl just don't feel their kids need to be learning such words........ and we should be respectful of that....... not be so stupidly self-absorbed. This isn't a matter of principal in what you're 'allowed' to say, it's just plain common sense and called showing a little consideration for others...... Something which is sorely lacking here.......
