Why does all spam email selling 'pills' always have a pink background?
kathryn delanuitJul 12, 2004, 4:46am
I have a question...WHY are you opening spam mail, and WHY do you do it
with html turned on??? You know that when you do that it d/l's stuff so they are able to log your IP on their servers, when the email is opened, and it confirms that your email is an active email account. Confirmed active email addy's sell for alot more which means that your addy will be sold more and you'll be getting LOTS more spam after that. And not only that, spammers are way sleazy and HAVE been known to stoop to using trojans to take control of puters and use it to spam others, which they will have alot easier job doing now that you so graciously provided them your IP addy when you opened their email. Sorry, I know this wasn't the point of your thread, it just bugs me tho, so many complain about being spammed to death, but then they go and do stupid stuff like opening spam with html on, or forward chain letters, or give their real addy and all real info to any stupid site that demands that info etc, then wonder *why* are they getting spammed so much lol. Because I feel like it, and who ever said anything about looking at it in
the GUI? I've been known to read HTML EMails via 'view source' before now... > You know that when you do that it d/l's stuff so > they are able to log your IP on their servers, when the email is opened, > and it confirms that your email is an active email account. I know, its such a TERRIBLE pitty for them that all of the HTTP homesites get blocked at the firewall, dash, they almost had me! > Confirmed > active email addy's sell for alot more which means that your addy will > be sold more and you'll be getting LOTS more spam after that. Inbox > Rule > Spam Folder > Rule > Deleted Items > And not > only that, spammers are way sleazy and HAVE been known to stoop to using > trojans to take control of puters and use it to spam others, which they > will have alot easier job doing now that you so graciously provided them > your IP addy when you opened their email. Uh huh... but even if I didnt have Godknows how many lines of active and passive defences, not to mention the best one of all: being able to read and understand every line of source code they send I would be seriously concerned... Surely they would not stoop to that low though... I mean if they did Id probably get REALLY pissed and move from just SQL Injecting their sites where I can to wipe out their lists, to taking more in-direct approaches and just handing the IP over to a few people I know to enjoy nothing more than fully taking out sites like that... You have to laugh when you enter ' into the site and it blows up in your face. > Sorry, I know this wasn't the point of your thread, it just bugs me tho, > so many complain about being spammed to death, but then they go and do > stupid stuff like opening spam with html on, or forward chain letters, > or give their real addy and all real info to any stupid site that > demands that info etc, then wonder *why* are they getting spammed so > much lol. erm... how else can you do anything BUT give your real address at some point if you actually want to recieve legit mail... uh... - Mark R Probably should have warned you prior that I look at most things in source > [View Quote] sw comitJul 12, 2004, 6:24pm

> erm... how else can you do anything BUT give your real address at some point
> if you actually want to recieve legit mail... uh... What I do is have junk addy's that I use to give to sites that do need a legit addy, for like a confirmation email or whatever. I just open some yahoo account just for that purpose, they can spam the junk addy all they want. I don't ever read stuff there....and I'm very careful about who I give the real addy out to. It does work....I get no spam at all in my real addy, just real email. builderzJul 13, 2004, 4:52am
Even if you are careful about who you give your real address to,
spammers can use automated dictionary attacks to eventually find (spam) your real address. Also, depending upon the privacy policy of your e-mail provider, they may share/sell your address with third parties (other companies). Which email provider you choose to use is very important. As far as the
dictionary attacks, they are mainly aimed at hotmail. Hotmail is the most targeted email there is. They are the number one target for dictionary attacks, account hacking, hijacking, etc. In the brief time that I did use hotmail way back when, that account was the target of dictionary attacks and hijacking and all kinds of crap. But, I have been using yahoo for years, and have never once had a dictionary attack or anything on any of my yahoo addy's. I strongly dislike ALOT of what yahoo has done in recent years, but at least with my accounts there I haven't had any problem with spam or attacks. I hate that yahoo has all the default settings set to "please send me lots of crap", and you have to go through and change all those settings to "no thanks, keep your freaking crap to yourself" when you set up a new account, otherwise you will be getting alot of crap from them, 3rd parties, etc. But once I've set that on the account I haven't gotten any spam at all. I have alot of yahoo accounts that I've had for years that I just use for the free webspace that you get with the account, and none of those addy's have ever recieved anything...five years and not a single thing yet. ;) [View Quote] sweJul 13, 2004, 10:55am
hmm, why is the sky blue? ok, the sky is blue, cuz it reflects off the sea,
and the sea is blue, cuz it reflects off the sky, well, who was it that flashed a big blue flash light between them both, to start off the blue reflecting? O_O would i be able to make them both, green, if i use lots of green flash lights and point them towards the sea and sky? cuz i think a green sky would be soo much cooler! ^_^ -SWE [View Quote] andrasJul 13, 2004, 12:09pm

> wait, what's a dictionary attack? O_O
> > -SWE > Your question can not be serious but I respond anyway :) Dictionary attack is when the spammers use a dictionary to guess email addresses (name lists, suffixed with numbers, etc) in the hope at least a few will find a real person. -- Andras "It's MY computer" (tm Steve Gibson) builderzJul 13, 2004, 2:02pm
Andras is correct. They just try and send e-mail to a bunch of e-mail
addresses at random to see if they work or not. They use one or more "dictionary files" and try to make up user names or just try and spam standard addresses likes abuse at yourdomain.com, webmaster at yourdomain.com, etc. So it might look like: sallyjane02 at whatever.com bobiscool at whatever.com andrew10 at whatever.com They can take a standard name like andrew and then combine it with the number 10 to see if it s valid address. They just keep sending and sending e-mails and the addresses that don't "bounce back" are usually real ones. Sort of like brute force password cracking in a way. Funny, I have just the opposite experience with one of my Yahoo!
accounts. I've had it for years and unchecked all of those "don't send me crap" (as you put it) boxes as soon as I knew about them and don't sign up to any opt-in newsletters, ezines, etc. Yet on my one account I have it set to filter out about 90 domains and I still have nearly 12,000 spam messages I need to sort through or delete. On another Yahoo! account with all of those things unchecked, I hardly get any spam at all. Go figure. However, on e-mail accounts on my own domain names that I host myself, I use SpamAssassin on the server side and it has greatly helped reducing spam. i actually don't get any spam on my hotmail account. don't really check it,

'"Will AlaskanShadow EVER soften up to me?"
I will forever consider you perhaps the most annoying, egotistical, self-centered person I have ever met on AW. I do not care if you suddenly think I am hot. I still find you as repulsive as ever, not to mention highly illiterate if you still fail to realize this. So to answer your question, that would be a "No". [View Quote] sweJul 13, 2004, 8:57pm

Alaskan stopped posting pictures of herself looking like she was dead... Turns out she is actually quite attractive when not looking like death... Ha ha, saw no reason why not to tell her, its quite funny to see her squirm at being complimented. > I still find you as repulsive as ever, not to mention highly > illiterate if you still fail to realize this What does my lack of spell checking have to do with this? By soften up I mean dont go out of your way to make every insult you can! ha ha. FYI the reason I 'softened up' was because Ive read though the LJ and some newsgroup posts and realised realised you do actually have a other side that you do not usually show but one that creates an interesting balance in your personality when you can see both sides of it. That and one of us has to take our finger off the trigger (I dont mean ie: dont shoot, I mean STOP shooting the fully auto's weve had pointed at eachother!) I can hope, eh? - Mark R Meet my new friends http://zetech.swehli.com/pics/the_clones.jpg [View Quote] alaskanshadowJul 14, 2004, 3:27pm
"What does my lack of spell checking have to do with this? By soften up I
mean dont go out of your way to make every insult you can! ha ha." By "illiterate" I was referring to the numerous times I have essentially told you to go to hell, which have yet to sink in. It's something I call "being able to read". I don't have to "go out of my way" at all, in fact it's really quite easy when dealing with someone as superficial as yourself. So as much as I hate Ashley, and consider her dumb as hell, that's nothing compared to your arrogance ;) [View Quote] strike rapierJul 14, 2004, 3:42pm
