I have yet to crash any 2000 / XP / 2003 when running decent coded programs.
Blue screen of death would put that on 9x code.

I have been using 2k/XP for almost three years now and I have not once blue
screened. The last time I was blue screened was on Windows ME.

The only way you get blue screen-ed is if you're having driver problems
in NT based systems.
Nov 17, 2004, 4:33pm
Yup, probably why my XP laptop keeps exploding... however with all the
hardware sorted never had a single major crash on this.

there are about about 24.5 million XP crashes reported a day
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,1210067,00.asp
and my xp freezes and crashes.. but i dont mean BSoD crash, that never
happened, i mean illegal operation, or whatever is XP's equivalent to it.

Haha the replies to this post are so predictable.
"OMGZ WINDOWZE IS ACTGUALY STABEL IF U USE IT PROPARLEY IDIOET >:|"
The fact is there's no excuse for using a system like Windows for simple
applications like these. It causes problems that don't need to be there
and it wastes money.

Simple....
Ever tried programming a multi-client network-based display system with full
live status screens and such?
Answer: No
Reason: Its hard...
Simple, I think not.

I guess Rossboy referred to the ATMs or advertising displays as simple applications, not AW.
At least that is how I read his post :)

Perhaps not simple, but still possible on a simple OS rather than Windows.

They're not even really a GUI application, just text in colums with some
colors. Why is memory being low any concern to the user, the question
should be. Maybe an administrator.

So why piss about making it ultra-portable when you can just dump it on a
distributed XP / 2000 Network and utilise all the back end API etc to send
and communicate like NDDE

Stability? It doesn't have to be portable.

You can make something just as easily in linux as you can in windows.
Nov 18, 2004, 7:31pm
lol I didn't even mention Linux...
technically it could have as many complications as Windows, but in
reality it probably would be much more stable when being used for just
one specialised task.
BSD would probably be even more stable though.

Anything beyond Windows would be more stable. BSD, Unix, Linux, BeOS,
Darwin (OSX). Hell you could even probably write your own specialized
OS for dealing specifically with what they were doing. For ATMs I would
expect it, but if not I would really feel unsafe using an ATM running
Windows as its backend.

Hey... if it was good enough for the machine that receives all the votes
from the voting booths...

I may be wrong, but millions of banking locations around the world unix
Windows as the back end, your cash will probably go through at least 2
windows systems in a day.
