Under 3.2 my MIDI playback keeps pausing/skipping and generally breaking up.
I have the latest AC'97 sound drivers for my motherboard and the latest
Microsoft media player wotsit....is it just that the PC is too busy to
process the Audio in 3.2 ?

Spec:

P3 733 (133 FSB)
128MB RAM
win 98
AC'97 Audio with latest drivers
Directx 8.0a
ATI MAXX 64MB video
Latest MS media player software

Odd... your system should work fine. Go into your Multimedia control panel,
and on the audio tab, try to select a different MIDI output device. See if
that helps.
