Ok. You've got Russia's motive. What's the United States' motive?
Britain's motive? Pakistan's? I think the US's motive is humanitarian in nature. Perhaps with a bit a revenge thrown in, but humanitarian nontheless. -- SW Chris Eagle Scout, Philosopher, Peacemaker, and... Kung Fu Master? http://www.winternet.com/~mikelr/flame1.html [View Quote] It gives some background information about the goings on of 1921, it also explains fairly well "Why We War" (which is the topic of this thread). What do I think? I think many (note, I did not say ALL) Americans are completely unaware of anything that goes on outside their front doors, they rely on what they see on television, in the newspapers (if they bother to read those), and they desire to be spoon-fed pabulum by the mass media (who doesn't, btw, tell us everything, they only tell us what stories they think will Sell). What Sells is not reality, what Sells is entertainment. Do you remember the Nirvana song "Smells Like Teen Spirit"? In it Kurt Cobain is expressing this idea that we Americans do not actually take the time to understand and absorb the feelings and ideas that are important, but that Generation X has numbed itself to what is really going on in the world. He strove as an artist to wake people up to Really Living, to Feel with their hearts and minds, instead of accepting that spoon-feeding. The song was a statement... "here we are now / entertain us". Because he could not reach through that numbness and make us see clearly the reality of the situation, he became despondent and he killed himself. That's what that was about. And that's what my post was also about.... trying to make people see things for themselves. What do I think? As a former "warrior" and disabled vet, I think war should be the very last choice a nation should make and, only after all attempts to resolve a problem have failed should it be undertaken, and then it should be undertaken for very good reasons (and not just retribution) and then a full-out, full-bore war should be fought until the situation is resolved. I think the media and the politicians have attempted to paint the picture that part of the reason that we are now in this war against Terrorism is for humanitarian reasons... human rights, for example. Clearly, that is not a motive for this war. A look back over just the past ten years of the history of Afghanistan will show you that the Taliban was put into place with U.S. money, aid, and arms, streamed through Pakistan, because we thought the Northern Alliance (who was the previous government) needed to be ousted from power. Russia has everything to do with what is going on in Afghanistan today, and from what I've been reading, they've already made a deal with the Northern Alliance to build a post-war oil pipeline right through Afghanistan to secure themselves a mideast oil supply. Look into that. Look into what the real motivations for this war are. Don't ask to be entertained.
