Still doing the ol' "motion test" thing.

Here's one where I was playing with secondary motion:

Also, I had a couple of requests for stuff from the older list. I put those back up here:

Haa. This reminds me, I was about to ask you for some help on getting voodoo into tS. I tried like a zillion times with different settings and everytime the tracker data was seriously messed up. The camera moved and rotated randomly.

I dug up all of your posts on the subject (not just on tS forum) and made all the steps to import the data but I failed every time. I just don't know how. :( Since then I've moved on to other things but just out of curiosity I might try it sometime for one more time ...

Loadus: Before exporting, enable "3D Fpoints" (Options->Draw Options) in Voodoo. This will show you exactly how the feature points will match your footage. If they do not match there, they won't in trueSpace either.

If it's something besides that, feel free to email me the data and I'll see if I can find out what the problem is.

Kewl. I'll check it out (I'm in the middle of one difficult logo animation, but after that). I remember looking at the 3D points in voodoo - they matched (well, the first and the last frame were a bit "off") but when brought to trueSpace, you couldn't even see them.

Once I exported the python script again but now with the points being size of 1000. Now I saw them but no matter how you rotated the camera (usually started in frame 3 to align it), the scene was seriously off, like the camera was on the other side of the whole scene. I'll have to get back to you on this. It would be cool to have it working ...

Hi Frank - Great demos - roughly how did you do the jello thing? - (newbie alert!)

The jello cube object was animated with the ClothMotion plugin in trueSpace 6.6 and then brought in and rendered in trueSpace 7 w/ Vray Caustics.

I guess I would call that one a simulation as opposed to an animation.

;)

While I'm at it, here's a face test from a character I was working on a while back

Found a really short test clip of a mechanical character I named "Red".

http://www.frankladner.com/red_jumps.wmv

Lots and lots of little "test" renders. Maybe one day it will lead to something bigger.

Hey Frank,

Red looks even cuter if you run him on auto-loop. Really funny!

Always a pleasure to view your stuff Frank. How about adding some sound and really putting the zap on my head.

By the way, aren't we due another MoStu toot soon:D . I nearly got the whole set.

Excellent.. I'll have a look at that.. would you be interested in sharing the file? - I assume the cloth plugin would be needed?

That "Red Jump is great...

Ha ha! Well, I recently purchased a modified Marantz PMD-660 (solid-state compact flash recorder) with the intention of doing some dialog and foley stuff. I have a goofy something or another in the works (maybe a gallery submission, dunno) but whether or not I finish it remains to be seen. ( I am like our pal Vizu when it comes to projects. :) )

I no longer have the first two jello cube scene files. However, it was no problem to throw some cubes in a new scene, tweak ClothMotion a bit, and get the same result. I verified that this scene will open in trueSpace 5.1 and 6.6 with no problems. Just shade the cubes however you want, subdivide them, and render. Oh, and you may want to add some lights to the scene. ;) <<SEE ATTACHMENT>>

ClothMotion records vertex keyframes, so the objects play back in trueSpace without the plugin being present.

I can't really take any credit for it, since it's ClothMotion that does the motion and trueSpace 7 + Vray handle the caustics, giving it a more realistic look. ;)

That test of secondary animation looks excellent. The motion looks very natural and fluid. You should stop testing and start working on a short movie for our pleasure ;) (I have a particular project in mind).

No, no, no...there are already many people here questioning the lack of animating talent working on TS7.5. Frank is just one of those 'talents' involved...trust me..he needs to keep testing..;)

Thank you, GraySho! My problem is doing things in short bursts. If I could come up with a super-interesting story that I would like to share then maybe I could be enthusiastic enough to see it through. As it stands, I just test concepts and such.

How is the German project coming along, by the way? I've seen some of the models and they are looking really good! Has Oliver started on the animation yet?

Tiles is constantly kicking people's butts to get into work, so it is progressing :D

About half of the models are done and textured, and I'm working on the sets and lighting. I don't know when we will have a trailer ready, but don't expect it too soon.

Unfortunatly Oliver has abandoned the project (and the forum as it seems). I consider purchasing MoS to help out with animation, though I'm not sure if it is a smart move to buy a plugin which will not be working with later versions of trueSpace.

If you are planning to stick with the upgrades, you may want to wait and see what trueSpace 7.5 offers.

If on the other hand the time comes sooner than you expect for the animation to begin and tS 7.5 isn't yet released, you may want to check out the Motion Studio demo. You know what I think about the plugin. :)

Couldn't get the jello movie to open, got a ? in the middle of the Q.

And why does the forums have such a small file size for GIF's? 19kb? I mean you can load up a 2mb movie, but not a 20kb gif?

File worked ok for me.. the more I deal with the internet the more i believe its held together with string, tape and lot of faith!

re the 20kb thing - its normal with all forum software.. a 20k file when viewed 1000 times becomes 20Meg so IMHO it is wise to keep the sizes down..

Frank - do you think the TS7.5 charactor animation will compete well with Motion Studio?

I can't say anything specific (NDA). Sorry! ;)

Just wanted to let GraySho know, with regards to the German animation project, that if he's not pressed to begin animation soon (and as he said, they apparently have a ways to go yet) then he might just wait for tS 7.5 instead of getting MotionStudio. BUT if they get farther along sooner than expected (before the release of 7.5) then MoStu would be a good candidate.

Can you hint at something vaguely then. A single crumb would be quite ample sustenance in this time of famine.

I'd like to hint...

...but Roman would smite my ruin upon the rock. (As Gandalf would say)

:)

"Don't you tell no secrets, Frankwise Gamgee." he tol' me.

...and I don't mean to. I don't mean to.

Ok, ok, if I had to give a hint...I'd say 7.5 would be preciousssssss.

That's it - I'm done for tonight.

Reading between the lines there I would say that we are going to be able to animate Gollum in TS7.5!! :D

That's good. I was going to ask if you were personally 'happy' with how it was all shaping up down there in bunker caligari. 'Precioussss' is the crumb of comfort I was looking for. I'm full (for now). Maybe I should hassle Roman instead for a(nother) more specific insight. You just seemed weaker Frank:D. I know you're just bursting to say what's really going down. You know exactly how I feel. Get under my spell little denizen of Poplarville....relax..............you're feeling sleepy..............so......sleepy......

Here's a different scene. This time I saved from tS6.6 as a normal tS6 SCN (instead of a tS5 scene, as with the last file)

EDIT: Oh, you mean the Quicktime file? (Hence the "Q") Sorry! Have you tried playing it outside your browser? (ie. Quicktime standalone instead of plugin)

This is a test using texture map replacement for mouth animation.

The problem I ran into here was having to get around the texture blending in trueSpace (which is actually a good thing for most texture animation, but not for quick-n-poppy mouth animation). The way I got around it was by making sure I set a key at the frame right before the next changed texture key.

Would be handy to have a plugin for this type of animation, or for 3D mouth replacement type animation (which would copy each replacement mouth's translation and rotation keys to match the target, and simply set the various mouth shapes' invisible keys. Stop-motion style! :) )
