Shades of Clutch Cargo Frank!
Clutch Cargo was an old cartoon that super-imposed a real persons lips onto cartoon figures. It look really odd with a cartoon face and big red lips moving around, not matching the rest of the cartoon face motion. :)
Very innovative Frank. Texture motion might open up a whole new rage. I could video tape my hand movements and attach them as a skin texture. er... maybe not. :) |

Wow Frank, those new CA tools you're beta-testing are more technologically advanced than I thought! Must be a new retro-filter.:D
Its always a pleasure to see your wips Frank. Reminds me of the work of another Frank who kept a journal similar in nature to your posts: "...zer Mouth von Patient Eins vaz grafted onto Patient Zwei mit voll succesfulness but zer LippenPuckerUppen effect needs more effecktivness. Zer experimental data von Doktor Caligari wants der more tinkering mit. " - Baron Frankenstein, 1818. :p |

Hey, go for it! :) You would need to make an accompanying mask for the arm, I reckon.

Ahh. That Frank. LOL!
Thanks, guys! |

Cool animation! I've often wondered about using textures for mouth motion - I imagine that another approach would be to make your mouth motions into an AVI and paint that onto the mouth area. I imagine that could be even easier than keyframing a series of static images but what would I know? I'm cetainly not an animation guy!
But a cool animation all the same! |

I have tried this before and you are right, it is easier in some ways than keyframing the static images.
Basically you just bring the 2D mouth images into an NLE (Adobe Premiere, Vegas, etc.), load up your sound file, and place the mouth images on the timeline at the locations they occur in the sound.
The next steps would be to render that out to an uncompressed AVI and paint it on your character in trueSpace.
With this method you get exactly what you want (no blending between mouth shapes) BUT if you are in the middle of animating the character in trueSpace and decide you want to change a mouth image, you have to change it in the NLE and re-render.
Another cool thing about the NLE method is that you can use masks for different parts of the face. You can have the eye animation on one layer and mouth shapes on another, for instance. This is a lot easier than using texture masks and blending in trueSpace.
So yeah...it's a good idea, Wizard! :)
But a cool animation all the same!
Thanks! |

Test animation with dialog. This was done by hand - ShapeSwapper plugin isn't quite ready for actual use at this time.

"Hello...how 'bout I give you a big'a wehaaaa."
Did have some body movement w/ MotionStudio bones but had some strange issue with the teeth objects appearing outside the mouth and one mouth shape appearing behind the head when I moved the head bone. May try doing a boolean union of the teeth to the mouth to keep it one mouth object glued to the head. May yield less issues. |

Thanks, Chester!
After watching it several times, I see some of the shapes should have been pushed a bit more. Maybe the "ahh" sounds should be bigger.
Plus I kinda set myself up for difficulty when I recorded the dialog. The middle bit has a lot going on in a short amount of time, so I had to try and be impressionistic about it, not keying each sound but the overall idea. Even still it looks funny to me.
I think the next one will be better. |

As I saw that I must think on you Frank.
I think it's the same like you had in mind with the blending right?
