I've been thinking about moving up to 6.6 for awhile, but havent been able to convince myself it's worth it. I have 5.2 and all of the Paks and many of the features in 6.6 feel like integrated plugins to me (particles, mirror, arrays) albeit with more 'trueSpacey' controls; I realize the app is more than this but I hope my point is taken. Even in the rendering dept, there are not a lot of features new to this version (according to the brochure) but when I was looking at the gallery last night I was struck by how (starting around when TS6 came out) incredibly realistic and amazing a lot of the images were and couldn't help but assume that this had something to do with the Lightworks 6.6 engine. Or did everyone start using Virtualight or did the radiosity improve a lot? Can anyone tell me in which ways the LW6.6 engine is different from the version used in TS5; other than baking, object lights etc. I mean has the engine itself been made better in some ways?
I used to be a huge fanboy of TS and when 6 came out I remember being slightly disappointed that it wasn't a little more of a leap and decided against upgrading. It's obviously a lot cheaper to do so now than it was then, but even $99 is a decent chunk of the price to upgrade to 7 (which I wont consider until I see what 7.5 is all about, especially since my system is not really up to par to run it) or buy a different app. I guess what I'm hoping is for some comments about what is good\great about 6 and maybe some of the smaller things that make it better which only a user of previous versions would recognize. Thanks |

Hi Chester,
I looked at the additions with 6.5 and 6.6 here if you haven't found it
http://www.caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts65/Brochure/specification.asp?Cate=BSpecification
I was in a similar situation a few years ago. I had 5.1 and most of the paks. I finally uppgraded to 6.6 in one jump. The list above gives you some ideas of the benefits. Layers which I think came with 6.0 is invaluable for organisation and more complex modeling. Geometry paint again very usefull there was a lot of overhauls in animation department (NOT character) but non-linear animation clips and so on and big jumps in the physics.
The other major difference I noticed was that the Nurbs tools became featured to the level they were usuable and Subdivision was much improved. A warning re paks though, some very usefull plugins (pyrocluster for example) were much more problematic after 6.0. There is a plugin compatiblity list somewhere on the Caligari site which I cannot immediately find which should help out here.
The biggest difference I noticed was the speed of my computer after the upgrade and in the end I needed a new one...the original was a pentium 3 600 MhZ. I now have a 3.2 ´MHz P4 and copes well with tS 7.11 and hopefully beyond ( of course 6.6 flies on it).
But the bottom line is that I was very glad I upgraded...depending on your computer you may notice a performance drop...
Hope this helps,
Chris |

To be honest the increase is not enough to justify spending the money. All of the little tweaks that take place still don't amount to much and for 100 bucks you can get stronger modelling or animation tools. Also there still was very little done in the pre v7 series to crash-proof the software.
My suggestion is to keep your existing TS for it's rendering ability and look into buying other software that's additive to your creation process or save up an extra 150 getting 6.6 AND another software. This way you have access to the the various layering & texture tools and more diverse tooling via the other software. Because right now no complete package covers all of the bases. |

I don't really agree with Chrono. I recently upgraded from tS6.0 to 6.6 and I also use tS7.
As CdeB said, tS6.6 is more stable, has several very usefull tools and features.
tS7 offers new features in player side, plus V-Ray and tP but its model side is not a true/complete tS6.6.
I would suggest you to go with 6.6 now AND start saving money for tS7.5 or future versions :) |

Unless the difference between 6.6 and 7.1 is enormous, I would wait until you can afford to upgrade to 7.5. There really is some good stuff coming aside from just the animation upgrade.
You might want to look at Hexagon for a cheap addition. I managed to get it for $1.99 when it moved to DAZ; nice complimentary piece of software now some of the bugs have been quashed. |

you missed out on getting TS 6.6 on sale.. Caligari had it available + Ipack and some courses for $199, a couple of months back. thats when I snagged it since my previous version was 3.2 best purchase I've made this year :D |

If you base your descision on your system specs and do not want to upgrade (or can't) I would stick with what you have. If your's is lower than mine (and mine is low in today's world) you'll need to save for 7.5 and a new system.
I was very happy with 4.3 and saw no need to upgrade untill 7. I never saw anything worth the upgrade at the time. Everyone has their own opinion. Alot of people will not agree with me but develop your skills with what you have, an upgrade won't make you better, it just makes it easier. There is alot of work that is better in the older galleries then some of the work there today. The version had nothing to do with it.
Chrono's idea to update with other software to help you is the way I would go. Splinter's idea to wait for 7.5 and save is the long term perfect solution. |

Thanks for all the replies. That $199 Ipak deal was actually what made me think about upgrading, as the Ipak seems pretty cool (I'd buy it standalone if it worked with 5)..I also scooped Hexagon on that $1.99 (what a difference a decimal point makes) deal so I've got that powerful modelling option too.
I'm still on the fence (mainly for layers, IPak and the physics improvements) but at least I'm a little more informed.. |
