A break from my usual approach. Did anyone have one of these in the 70s?
My wife wants me to put in an old sweet wrapper - something from that period. I'm not sure. It's just a bit of fun really. Any suggestions? |

Thanks Hemulin. It is indeed a Space Hopper in all its rubbery glory. In the 70s these things tended to inhabit the gardens of suburbia (I guess they got too dirty to bring into the house). |

Yeah, I like it however I think the floor looks too flat for the texture yu have given it and the same with the wall to the left of the image

Hemulin is too young to know this. To him the 1970's is something studied in history lessons....;) |

I did, can't remember whether it was late '70s or early '80s that I had it though.

Hmmm - sweets from that time... 12p Mars bars? :) |

Spangles for sure. Kola Cubes, Kopp Kopps, Texans, Pacers....I could go on.

Ooh yes I remember!!! Think I might even still have mine in the back of my mums shed! As for sweet wrappers - Texan Bar, Hubba-Bubba, Bazooka Joes, Black Jacks and Fuit Salads were the weekly pocket money ritual !
Great grass texture and really like the stray strands up the side, nice touch. I love nostalgia (makes me feel young again!) and really look forward to watching this develop! |

If you brighten up the light source, and increase falloff, it will look like a nighttime flashlight shot. Just make that rubber thing a bit more shiny to reflect some of the flashlight. |

Damn, looking at that site reminded me of my favourite chocolate bar of all time [Frys Five Centres], which is sadly no-longer made. :(

They weren't all that shiny, at least I don't remember mine being so, infact I reckon rchappell's got it pretty accurate in the shine department. |

You're right, they weren't. In fact some were quite rough! (Maybe a noise bump map?).
Of course, now you can get them in every shape, size and finish! -

Thanks for the comments and some great links. I spent some time creating the face and there it is on the front page of the space-hoppers.co.uk ...
Anyway, I notice the retro edition hoppers don't look the same as I remember. In particular the spiral handles have changed.
Thanks for the link to the old sweets, Splinters. ...Alas, the Texan bar is no more. After a short re-release I see the bar is now consigned back to history. I guess tastes change! The prices certainly do ... (It is a long time since Mars bars were 12p, Alien. Now of course the Mars bar comes in so many varieties - even ice cream!)
I know the grass looks a bit flat - I may work on that some more. I need to address the lighting. I like the idea of simulating a night flash-shot, Graysho. I need to experiment a bit with that.
I don't want to start any intense modelling work like the last project but intend to keep this to a few choice items and work on the textures and lighting etc. I might even try to animate the hopper. Might be a bit ambitious though... |

I once did a grass test with bitmaps mapped on simple planes and multiplied per geometry paint. Here's what it looks like (grass texture by tiles). Renders quiet fast if you merge them with the poly combiner plugin.

That is impressive grass, GraySho. How did you manage to get the shadows so good and also how did you prevent the grass looking like a repeated pattern? You couldn't show the corresponding mesh for the scene? |

For the shadows you need raytraced shadows with transparent shadows activated. The bitmaps have an alpha channel (32-bit tga). I used 3 or 4 different objects with different textures for the geometry paint to avoid patterns. See the settings for geometry paint for more variation on placement.

I don't recognize any of those except the teams, but it's a cool looking toy/thingamabob nonetheless |

They're all sweets and chocolate bars from the 70's and 80's in the UK. The orange space-hopper has become kind of iconic from that period. It's from the same sort of period as things like the Banana Splits show on Television (I believe that was a US show). |

Thanks, GraySho. I am checking this but I don't think I have geometry paint. I am still running trueSpace 5.2. I also need to learn about the tga format and using alpha channels.
Time for more research... |

Ah the memories this bring back. I once won a space hopper race when I was in the cub scouts!!
The ground does look a little flat and the drain pipe has the opposite problem and is a little rough but with a little tinkering your got a cracking image gromit :)

Wow, this brings back childhood memories. :)
Mine was just plain blue though. Unfortunately, my use of it contributed to the untimely demise of a glass table.. :) |

ahh the memories ...
I am glad I triggered some memories with this thread. It feels good to think back even though, as my friend often says, "distance lends enchantment to the view.."
Anyway, I have not had much time this week but I love the comments. I have tweaked the image slightly but not enough to warrent another posting. I set up a simple animation last night and here it is just for a laugh. Works best on repeat play as it is tiny. I did have sound but the Boinging sound was just too annoying. |
