I usually use Cinepak for rendering tests, but I got to thinking - does this slow down/speed up rendering time depending on the codec?

It slows down rendering because there is an overhead in compressing the rendered image using the CODEC. The overhead will vary from CODEC to CODEC as well. I don't think this is a significant delay, though, as the actual render time is usually far longer than the time required to compress the resulting image using a CODEC.

Don't forget that rendering a still to JPG has a similar overhead for the same reason.

Thank you. Can you tell me which is a quick(est) codec? (for scenes that I am testing, not final HQ renders)

Hi David!

One thing to consider: If it's just for testing an animated sequence, you may want to render at a lower resolution than your final output.

Sometimes I may render tests out to a 352x240 uncompressed AVI. This gives a quick render time, and I rule out compression artifacts so I should get a pretty good approximation of the final result.

Most machines nowadays can play uncompressed 720x480 (and higher) AVIs at proper speed, so smaller sizes should be no problem at all.

All of my final renders go out to TGA frames (720x480 or 1920x1080).

I have another question about Cinepak I hope davidjohnson doesn't mind me asking. When I selected differant compression % in Premier the final size of the file was the same. Is there only one compression size and that is the default? The output looked better than Indeo but the file size was too large. The file size did change for Indeo when changing the %.

Also in regards to rendering time, I rendered out to Tga single files and brought the files into Premier. Applied the codec to 1127 frames in less than a minute.

I can't imagine a codec adding noticable time to a render.
