I wanna know who has the biggest monitor, and ideally what type it is. I currently have a 21" CFT monitor. It's MASSIVE, but I'm currently looking to buy a brand new 32" HDTV and use it as a monitor, if it's possible. Some people pimp their cars... I pimp my PC :D

The resolution will be maxed lower, sadly, but... Cooooorrrr! Just imagine it! I would feel like I'm inside trueSpace... *DROOL*

I carefully read the fine print before answering your survey!:D
Reality: I have a Samsung SyncMaster 930B 19"
Fantasy: I don't know if Drive-Ins ever existed on the other side of the big Pond but this is what I would want......;)

I have a 19" Xerox XA7-19i LCD, & an ancient 20" Eizo CRT, though the Xerox has the larger viewable area. Hoping to replace the Eizo with another Xerox in the [hopefully] not-too-distant future.

indeed Alien better as "one" monitor are "two" monitors :D

Hopefully I can spend some place in the future to support my 19' with another one. Working with 2 monitors (or 3 or...) is an amazing speed booster for the work.

I have 1 19" ViewSonic TFT and 1 17" BenQ TFT.

Working with 2 Monitors are better than on only one Larger screen.

Really? I always find it difficult... I end up forgetting where I've moved everything to. I guess it would be cheaper this way, but 32"!!! Come on! I went out for a look today. It's £499. Pretty cheap too, but that worries me. I once saw a 50" marked down to £500, and was gonna get it, but only stopped cus I thought it must have been a bad model. Turns out it was meant to be £2000 and was mistagged (online), so within 2 days it had shot up. I was kicking myself. They couldn't have refused me either!!!

I have an Eizo 21" CRT monitor which I got for €50 :) !!! It was second hand and was handed in to a computer shop for repair because the image on it, everything had a double line around it on the left. At first, when I got it and saw this, it was annoying, but for €50, you can't complain. But then, over the course of a few weeks, the double line, whatever was causing it, fixed itself. The monitor is now working fine, the image on it is crystal clear, no more double lines. A 21" monitor for €50... LOL!!

I took the plunge. I'll be getting it next friday... so I'll try to post a picture of it once I get it all up and running. My mouth's watering already :p

I see the majorty have 19" monitors... but I have no idea who has the bigger one, as they didn't comment :( Shame, would have been cool knowing what size.

I have 2 19" models Samsung flatscreens. It's nice to be able to off load stuff to the second monitor while doing work on your primary monitor. I'd like to get 2 24" monitors though, seems like that would be about the perfect solution.

My friend has a nice size plasma hooked up to his computer. His plasma has a native resolution of 1024x768 I think. I do know that unless you run his plasma in the native resolution it looks horribly blurry to us both. So in reality although his screen is bigger he has less screen real estate for his photoshop work. He likes my LCD so much better when he visits. So he's stuck with the native. I also use my 19" Viewsonic LCD in 1280x1024 and could never go back down to a lower resolution. So you might need to sacrifice sharpness and clarity for size.. your choice. My advice would be to bring a laptop in the store and hook the video out to the set you want and make sure its clear enough for graphic work. Also look at different resolutions on the set and see how it differs. After my motorcycle is payed off I'll be buying one of these to go with my viewsonic.

just my two cents. Good luck.

Hey cool, thanks for the info Damian. Unfortunately though, I have already ordered it :( I've had a 2nd PC lying around without a monitor for a while now, so I may end up pulling that together. It's 2.2ghz, so still pretty good. I have a TV card and XBOX 360 hooked up to my PC at the moment, so the HDTV will hopefully come in handy in more ways than one. I crumbled when I saw Steinie's cinema image... I imagined one of those little heads being mine. At the moment my resolution is 1280x1024, like yours, but sometimes it gets a little annoying. I'm currently working on a website, and it being 800x600 gets frustrating. Hopefully it'll be good... if not... thank god for eBay :)

Thanks,

Andy

Ok, so it finally turned up... took many attempts and many returns, but I'm now using a 32" hdtv as my PC monitor! However (and there always seems to be one when I'm happy :( ) it isn't working correctly... NOOOOOOOOO! It's strange, it runs high res in safe mode, but that's it. I can't use it when windows starts up normally! Might this be something to do with my graphics card? Cus if it is... grrrrrr... It just comes up with "no signal" and makes me want to cry, lol.

Check your refresh rate that your gfx card is outputing, you want it as low as possible (60hz ish) and then check ur res. If you haven't already that is :o

Safe mode uses the most basic of settings to try and make everything work straight away.

How do I alter the refresh rate of the card? It won't let me change anything in safe mode... it doesnt even appear to recognise that I have one. That's what I'm in now... will I have to change it out of safe mode?

You should be able to change it somewhere in safe mode, hmm strange

Erm.......I presume you boot your computer with the monitor/tv turned on (if you don't - try it)

I know XP is a bit stupid when it comes to changing refresh rates and resolutions in safe mode. Here is one option -

1.enable remote desktop - or install vnc
2.rdp/vnc your computer (when its booted normally)
3.change the res and refresh rate remotely

ill try and find the answer

I think I can run it in VGA mode, but the quality is awful... hmm, I'll give that a go, then if not, I'll hand the steering whell over to you :)

Thanks.

Zeipher: what card you got, ATI or Nvidia? Reason I ask is I'm not familiar with whatever differences there may be in settings for Nvidia cards. If it's an ATI 1, & barring any actual fault or incompatibility of the card or HDTV, it shouldn't be too hard to get it sorted.

Nope, it's an Nvidia card. I found out what the problem is, but I have no idea how to fix it. There's actually a mode for my card which allows me to say "It's an HDTV", but I need to get to the Nvidia control panel to use it... the problem is, for some reason the control panel won't load. The cursonr blinks for a second, then nothing happens. I've tried reinstalling the drivers, etc, but it doesn't appear to work. I think I need to figure out a way to wipe my machine clean of anything Nvidia, then try it again. Any ideas anyone?

I know ATI do a tool for doing what you describe [remove all trace of drivers] for their software, maybe Nvidia do something similar?

Hey, that's great! Found a program called driver cleaner that does it. I've been trying manually! Thanks, I'll keep you posted :)

Nope, doesn't do anything. All I need is that Nvidia Nview Desktop Manager to load, and I should be set... I did a google search and it appears other people are having the same problem, but I can't find a solution. This is driving me crazy. The monitor works, the graphics card is built to support HD-out, but I can't use it because one little program doesn't work? Very annoying!!!

You could try PowerStrip (http://entechtaiwan.net/util/ps.shtm).

Failing that, try an ATI card. :D

I think i'll just have to return it. It's stupid... in safe mode I can get crystal clear 1024x768 32bit visuals... but when my graphics card takes over, it can't display anything. It is literally that one program that I can't load up, and is apparently the only one I need. I guess I could wipe my system and start from scratch, but it's too much hassle for a monitor. I'm giving up :(

Thanks for all your help though guys!

Z you should be able to getaway with just uninstalling the Nvidia drivers, rebooting, then reinstalling the new drivers, rebooting again and letting windows do its thing with matching up the driver with hardware.

Nvidia always recommends uninstalling old drivers first before installing any new drivers.

Just tried it, and no change. It's the Nvidia graphics card's fault... well, more like the software. I think something's stopping it from opening. Shame... it looked so beautiful too... sniff...

Ah well, the dream is over :(

21 inch Sony P1110 ultra flat trinitron. LCD's look great until compared to a high end CRT. THE LCD's as great as they are seem more pixelated by comparison.:D

Only when you're not running it with it's native resolution I guess. I only ever noticed that, when running a game in lower resolution than 1280x1024, which is a common standard for a 19" LCD.

A standard CRT can easily be bested by a good LCD. But this trinitron just seems to smoke every monitor I have seen since I started using it. I had a good 19" and the 21" just like phasers the 19" and the 19" explodes, dosent have a chance. Now I have not used an ultra high end LCD, but the ones I have seen just don't seem to measure up. Too bad, the 21" Sony is a beast, weighs a ton, heats up the room, sucks up most of my desktop real estate and pulls in so much dust that if I slam the door I get an instant cloud. If I could generate these dust particles in tS I'd be working in Hollywood.
