It's coming along very nicely Paul! :) I'm curious though, you always have very clean images, would you be willing to share how you do your lighting? Do you use a combination of HDRI and standard lights? |

No secret Dele but you are right-I like my scenes lit crisp and sharp, unless I am doing 'darker' stuff which is rarely aimed at kids.
First test had one infinite light with shadow for the sun. Then I added HDRI for a bit of softness and colour. On the last (top) image I put a local light inside the 'showroom' to light it-also casting shadow but you cannot see it due to the outside lights being so bright.
The HDRI is simply the one that is in TS7-the outdoor house one (forget it's name).
Hope this helps. |

Splinters, are you using V-Ray or Lightworks? Which do you prefere for this type work?
I'm enjoying your work and it's progress! |

Steinie, for this project I am using Lightworks but I do have Vray. Vray is very fast and realistic on more complex scenes (see the watch and wheel alloy in this month's gallery- they are both Vray)
You cannot always simply render a LW scene in Vray-textures do not always transfer well and certain changes need to be made. A lot of my work has been done in LW and I do not want to retexture and light each scene etc.
However, the major factor has to be the DOF which is not supported in Vray (yet!). Ever wondered how my images look a bit like...well..stop motion stills ala Corpse bride etc.
It is the DOF which makes it look like a camera is focused on a small plasticine figure rather than a flat crisp CGI render. When Vray does this I might switch...it is a brilliant option but perhaps a bit too real for my little cartoon world. |

Cartoon worlds rock! :) And I LOVE the puddles, they look so cool.
I've always assumed Harold to be English as the style has a very English feel to it, yet there's an American fire hydrant in the latest pic. Am I wrong in my assumption or is Harold meant to be on the other side of the pond? Or am I just being an English snob? :) |

Well spotted-I was messing with DOF and needed a detail but I am ashamed-I deserted my British heritage for a moment. It will be removed but I fear that a red phone box may be too big here...;) |

You could always go for a parking meter. We seem to have an abundance of them. |

Jolly glad to hear that mr Splinters! It's a shame the pavement is too thin for a red phone box because they are just soooo wonderful! Hemulin is right (what IS a hemulin by the way? Sounds like some ghastly medical juice!) that a parking meter would work but maybe an A-frame advert board for the bike shop would be more fitting? Or a plasticene bird? :)
Love this style of work - why strive for realism, that's what cameras are for! hehehe! |

Aaaah, if you do some digging you might find out, but i'm not telling :D
Or a plasticene bird?
Hmm, is this how you start all of your scenes....."hmmm, what new thing can I make with plasticene" - not mocking your work in any way btw |

You wouldn't think you would be able to get $36 for something like this (http://www.turbosquid.com/FullPreview/Index.cfm/ID/301509) would you? |

Yep, pretty much! :) Well, the clay scenes anyway! The others all start with a cube! (search the Gallery for examples!) The 'bird' inclusion was just a flippant reference to our two cartoon world styles.
Right, I'm off try and research a hemulin! |

I'm still amazed that people pay for 3D models at all!

Ok, just the bike to add now as a main model-then details and tweaks. For instance;
1. A few weeds in the pavement cracks
2. Some litter
3. Perhaps a character or two in the background
4. Some writing on the distant shop banner
5. Posters inside the main window
6. Harold should have an overcoat-it has been raining.
7. He is missing some loops on his trouser belt area.
Any other ideas gratefully considered...:D |

How about adding a sandwich sign on the sidewalk with some "sale" balloons tied to it? |

This is really a great thread, thanks Splinters for developing story and production in TS. Your thoughts in thread comes across as clear as your artwork and I am learning alot. Eager in anticipation as this gets further developed :jumpy: |

Yep better each time Paul. The only thing that catches my eye is the dustbin (trashcan) in the foreground looks a little to shinny for my tastes. I would prefer to see the sandwich board idea with an add for the bike shop.

Thanks, bin was dropped in at last minute so needs re-texturng. Balloons and sandwichboard are a great idea. I will move the bin to the background.
Anyone else need generic models at a minutes notice just to realise 3D Cafe is STILL DOWN! :(
It is rare I work so long on one image-I would usually have the book 'roughed out' by now but I am taking a more careful approach to this book...and enjoying it more.:D
Keep the suggestions coming and this image should be the benchmark for the rest of the book. Thanks for all comments and I am glad you are enjoying it. |

Ok, almost there now. A few additions needed but subtle ones;
A few weeds in the pavement and perhaps a few small details here and there.
It has been raining so Harold should be wearing a coat-probably a plain raincoat. Starting to chug a bit on my PC now...:( |

Thumbs up for the sign and the balloons but thumbs down for the lack of puddles. I liked the puddles :( Please tell me you forgot to turn them on when you rendered ;)
Looks great though :) |

If you are trying to give the place a run down look, you could ad some dead trees and leaves on the ground (I hate dead trees:p ) |

I just thought of another thing that might be kind of hard to do, what if you were to make the back of his jeans semi transparent and show his wallet on fire, not sure if the expression is used in england though |
