Nice, that was quite interesting seeing the project go from scratch to the finished render:jumpy: |

Thanks Hemulin-I could put it on my site but it is just for reference. Anyways, time to get on with the bike scenes next. This is a bit dark and brooding but the lighting etc. might be suitable for the scenes before Harold meets his fate... |

For some reason the stand doesn't look right. Not sure why. Colour, or reflection [as in lack of] maybe? http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alien42/smilies/dunno.gif |

Yeah, what's up with that? It just looks wrong, as Alien said, no reflections. Have you just not set the material for the underside, leaving it as the default one?
P.S. - Forgot about your website  |

I agree-but I used same texture as the frame of the bike...which looks OK...
As for underside Hemulin, while this shot is fairly realistic-I was messing with the textures as I thought that too much detail on the bike might detract from the rest of the book-you know, a bit too 'techy' for a kids book. However, I take your point. |

Oh, as Alien pointed out, there is something wrong with the stand. It looks as though it is floating, as there don't appear to be any shadows on it. |

Brilliant as ever Mr Splinters - thanks for the insight into your working process. It's a fascinating journey watching a complex scene unfold. Well done and thanks for sharing |

You are most welcome.
Perhaps on the next set of images, I will post them nearer their finished state. I don't really have the time, nor most of you the patience, to sit through one of these for every page of the book...;) |

The story is now 'finished' so if you would like to read it and follow the WIP then feel free to PM me and I will send it to you. Thought I better not post it as it would cause problems if it was ever to be published. And I am always open to suggestions....
If you do view please remember that I am more of an artist than a writer so be gentle...;) |

Need a bit of help with this one guys.
This is the text from the book;
Spinning on a platform was the bike of which he’d dreamed, with ‘ROCKET’ written down the side and buffed until it gleamed. It looked so nice and shiny so he said “Oh, what the heck!”, then took the wallet from his case and paid for it by cheque.
I watched Pixar's Cars last night and that is the look I am going for here; the bike should be the focus of the shot as it is the only image where the bike will be seen in all it's glory so it needs to be good but I am open to suggestions on composition-do I do a dream like shot with an infinite/cloud background or keep it in the shop?
Or do I put a spotlight on the bike and keep Harold blurred (DOF) in the back.
Finally, any tips on getting that showroom/high gloss look on the bike. Here I have HDRI, two area lights and a spot. |

I suggest you put some more spotlights in that scene. The bike really needs more highlights (and more specularity). And a different HDRI image. Check out that link of the geneva car show, the cars are flooded with sharp highlights and reflections.

Maybe you choose a different perspective, seeing harold's hand grabbing or holding the wallet (foreground, out of focus) and the shiny funky bike in the background, overlit and gloomy. |

Cheers Graysho, I will try them tips...could really do with i_maker for lighting auto's...:o
Must admit that I am tempted by the 'Harold's dream bike' slant on this one-angel wings optional... |

The second one is much more visually exciting. I must say though, that one of the first things I noticed is that Harold doesn't appear to have legs or feet anymore! :) |

Looking very nice Splinters, GREAT THREAD! :jumpy:
Are you using LW? If so and want to show walls in background but not block HDRI lighting, go into object info for the walls and turn off shadow casting. This will allow HDRI lighting from behind those objects to light your scene in addition to your regular lights. Absolutely love your first scene and story it shows. |

I love it! My suggestion would be somewhere between the two images - that gives a 'realistic' continuity for the story AND includes the dreamy gleam of the second image. Really though I think both images work well.
Good stuf |

Cheers guys.
Wizard-not sure how to mix the two. I do not think anything in the room is exciting enough to have in the 'dream' shot...but this has a way to go yet anyway...:o
Thinking of putting Harold further back on a cloud with some wings . Do you think this will look like he has died and gone to heaven? Then again, isn't that the saying when you are amazingly happy? |

That is the saying, but I'm not sure it would fit here, imagery-wise I mean. It's a shame it's not an animation, you could do a misty, dream-like scene of him running towards the bike, through a field, in slow motion with his arms out-stretched, with some cheesey romance music playing. :D |

On a cloud with wings to me says 'dead'. Probably upset a lot of the kids reading it too!!
Have you tried the 'regular' shop still with some sort of 'dreamy/misty glow' around the bike with a delirious/loving look on Harold's fizzog? Just a thought. |

Yeah - thats pretty much what I had in mind too - perhaps with the shop details blurred or 'overexposed' whilst the bike and harold are still sharp and clear amidst the misty glow.
"Fizzog" LOL - haven't heard that one in ages! I thought it was spelled (spelt?) 'phisog' as it's a contraction of physignomy IIRC :D |

Sorry guys-got a mental block on that one so I started the shed/alien scenes. This needs more rubble and plenty of paint potsbut what do you think so far? Promise to get back to the 'heaven' pic soon...;)
Here is the text:
Crashing through the roof, he landed safely on the ground, his bike was not so lucky and lay scattered all around. In the mess were lots of tins and though the light was faint, Harold saw that he was covered head to toe in silver paint. |
