The common 24-Bit / 8 bpc format has been giving way to the more flexible 48-Bit / 16 bpc for a while now.

After Effects has had it for a few years, along with other 2D apps and scanning applications, and some 3D apps are offering this now.

With massive storage space getting cheaper and cheaper, this larger file size is all the more feasible.

The primary benefit is the amount of flexibility 48-bit affords for later editing of the image. You can color correct with less worry about color blowout, clipping, banding, etc. Both still artists and animators would benefit from this.

Think of it as being closer to film in the tonal lattitude it yields. You can do color correction and get smooth results because there are more color variations.

Anyone else interested in seeing this in trueSpace at some point?

Of course, hugh benefit with gradients.

But even Photoshop haven't much plugins which work with 16 bit :(

Sure, but I think it would be up to the render engine providers, unless they've already made them 48bit & Caligari are only using 24bit.
