I am having a hard time finding some 3d girders and pieces of steel used for buildings - I guess the best way to describe it is something similiar to the stuff on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire - looks like a skeleton of a building. Girders with holes in them etc. Any free stuff around for architectual stuff like that? |

Lots of stuff is available online, but in cryptic form. For example, look under HEA profile on Google and you find this: http://www.themeter.net/travi-HEA_e.htm?Submit=drafting
It's a table of H beams of differing sizes. Click the 'Drafting' button to see what the measurements mean. |

Do you have a picture of what you have in mind? Typically steel girders are just an extruded H profile, all of the other details can be modeled in depending on the amount of detail you are looking for (or you can just apply a texture with all of the detail).

Enjoy ;)
I did a bit of CAD work earlier this year and needed to find this kind of stuff. It helps to know the proper technical terms, as manufacturers often have free online factsheets you can use.
This one is quite handy: http://www.tracepartsonline.net/(xvcy1tyqumywui45z5bkb355)/global/parts.aspx?ClsID=%2fROOT%2fC77%2fC77.140%2fC77.140 .T02%2f&tp=2&st=0&Lang=en&Class=TRACE&ttl=Profiles
and if you trim the URL back to http://www.tracepartsonline.net you can enter all sorts of products to get specs on a whole world of industrial goodies. With dimensions and specs. |

Well hopefully 6.0 or newer.
This 2 part object is set up with the grid array. One array for the truss and
1 array for the square frame. Just adjust length to suit and then bend to
shape with bend tool. |

It's already there as an attachment to previouse post.
If you have problems opening it with Open Object.....
copy it into one of your Object folders. |

I've got a whole series of standard size generic I and H section beams (UK sizes) that you're welcome too - these are literally just simplistic extruded sections with no fillets to keep geometry down when used in quantity.
I've also a series of 'parallel flange channels' ('C' shaped beams), plus 'circular hollow sections' (pipes!) and 'square hollow sections' (basically square 'pipes', but with filleted corners).
Again, I'lll happily upload these in a zip file if they'd be of use, but these are all pretty straightforward to create from scratch.
I could probably find a few 'cellular beams' on my pc (these look like regular I/H sections but with circular holes throgh the middle) - but I normally create these (using booleans) to suit a specific geometry so you can't scale them without distorting the holes.
Trusses tend to be to suit specific sizes so may not necessarily adjust easily to your purpose, but if I can find a few I'll try to dig them out.
NB I've only got TS 5.1 but assume you could still use old .cobs from this far back?
A few examples of the above - let me know if they'd be any use: |
