Interesting work. I'm curious - the tree and forground plants are apparently lit by something other than the moon in the background - are we going to see something in the foreground to explain where the light is coming from?

hte background image seemed to be just laying around on my hard drive, dunno where it is from but im going to make my own, the lighting was done this way so that i could show off detail, the final image will be more realistic in that sense, im thinking of having some glowing fairy like things like in Zelda. The background will be similar, dark and sinister, but probably without a moon, will show update soon, soooo tired!! lol

What does the texture look like that you used on the tree leaves? Can I see one example? I really like the look!

heh, ive used this texture for a long time, it has never seized to make good looking trees, of course mostly low poly trees, but it seems to function quite well in this too, the only texture i have ever made which ive been happy with lol

Thanks for showing me! After looking at your texture I think I might play around with using fractals to make leaves. Have you ever tried that? Don't be suprised to see a future work of mine having cool looking vegetation!

You've got me thinking....a huge mega forklift standing in the forest.....naw forget it. I would have to dedicate my life like a monk!:D

Your work looks great and looking forward to how it finishes.

hmm never tried fractals, my texture may appear that way because it was created using a photo of tree foliage, then in photoshop i duplicated the layer and flipped it horiziontaly and applied a layer setting so it was almost identical both sides, this meant i wasnt restricted in the ways i use it and it can easily be applied as a mask to a flat plane and repeated etc

quick update, decided agains the fairies for now when i realised that the title of this image is lonely hill lol, instead im going to use the same scene for 2 renders, both being opposites to each other, so im working on the lonely hill render first (below) and after i will work on Happy Hill or whatever im gonna call it lol:

Aw that looks WAY better! The lamp is a great touch - makes the underlit tree look more real.

A couple of suggestions if I may? I've found that alpha mapped leaves can look really good on a hemispherical surface (or a series of them) shaped like an open umbrella. The curvature gives a greater suggestion of shape to the trees. Also your lamp needs a brighter flame to match the apparent amount of light it's throwing IMHO.

I like what you've got so far though.

If you see my wireframe i have you hemispherical alpha maps and plane alpha maps, the lighting is no way nearing completetion heh, will be a lot better plus flame in the lamp, thus will hopefully show off the mixture of techniques used to make the tree, i found hemispheres give a good underbase, however some areas you can clearly see smoothed edges, whereas real trees have bit sticking out and are far less perfect, so i tried to create that idea by having planes around it too

I really like it but it's lost quite a lot of its sinister feel. (I have to ask as I can't work it out, what is the stuff hanging off the cross?)

Excellent work, you should be really proud.

Mnnh. I have to agree with our resident Witchy One here. The picture has both improved dramatically and not improved dramatically! Pictorially it is a great job IMHO - you have done very well. But as Witchy pointed out, it's lost some of it's sinister spookiness. I think this may be because the lamp light is very warm looking - perhaps if you tried it with a cooler bluer light or added more of a cool light component from the moon.

Either way this is a great job though, Matski - well done..

Yep! I have to agree with Witchy again - the middle one is my pick too. The cool monochromatic look works really well with this subject matter.

I did like the POV in the one with the very orange light too but this extremely angular view works well too.

Good work Matski
