So I finally got my external hard drive to work (For some reason, it worked perfectly after plugging it into a Mac and then back into my system  ), and I really want to take it with me on a flight in a few days. Obviously, it'll probably have to go through some X-rays. Is this bad for it? If so, is there anything I can do or tell airport security to not have it go through an X-ray scanner?

I have portable hard drives for the cameras and never had a problem. Same with the media cards, never lost an image yet through x-ray machines.

Just make sure it is not ticking when yoo go through. My wife was hauled off to the Strippy Downy room in Charles De'Gaul by an over zealous employee. Turned out to be her travel alarm, I shudder to think what would have happened if the alarm had gone off :jumpy:

My daughter was mortified but plucked up the courage to ask the guards NOT to point there guns at her mum. :D

Forgot to add that her Laptop was ok though :)
Cheers

another thing to keep in mind, which may or may not be a problem for you, is that security are often taking people with laptops aside and scanning the hard drives for porn (the focus is of course child porn). Not sure what happens if they find "regular" porn on them.
We had a guy come in last week from the US (I'm in Canada) and he was delayed for over 3 hours at security while they ran this check on his laptop, with 7 police officers standing by. It may only be international flights but I'd consider this possibility into your schedule and\or mass deletion scheme ;)

Thankfully, I can honestly say that a mass deletion (Or any deletion) will not be in order for me. However, would any problems be made manifest if said security guards were to find the entireties of Futurama, Family Guy, South Park, and Robot Chicken on the Hard Drive in question?

haha, no, this is "Hysterical Issue of the Moment" type security..you could probably have a blueprint of the White House and a Sniper rifle field stripping manual and they wouldn't care.

and just to be clear ... the guy I know had no porn, its the process of determining this that took 3 hours!
