I'm sure this is going to open a can of worms but I just feel the need to say this.

Counting the old forums and not counting the periods of time I am out to sea and can't get on line, I have been a pretty active member of the Caligari forums for about three or four years. (so I feel I have the right to voice this opinion)

I have always been impressed by, and enjoyed the professionalism and sprit of comradery of the participants here. It has always been a community of artists and people interested in art and three dimensional computer graphics, both professional and hobbyists that were more than happy to help each other out with problems they might be having understanding aspects of trueSpace, or for critical evaluation of their work; but critique in the professional sense and in the sprit of helpfulness.

I don't ever recall this critical evaluation EVER spilling over into critical character evaluation which in my estimation is neither professional NOR adult or necessary! There have been from time to time a few heated discussions or debates here in these forums, but the professional attitude NEVER fell by the wayside.

There's nothing wrong with a little friendly competition as in the speed modeling contest. It has no rewards except for the recognition and opportunity to impart some knowledge and experience the rest of us may not have ...

... but recently, I've seen some out-and-out mud slinging and a lot of chest puffing "I'm better and smarter than anyone here" attitudes in some members who maybe never experienced the atmosphere of the old forums. Some of our fellows are being accused of being untruthful, leading to a lot of unnecessary animosity; and for what?????? A silly exercise whose purpose is primarily meant to shake out the inspirational cob webs and as a way for us to get to know each other, and to encourage people to start submitting their work to these forums. What reason would one of us have to lie about the time it took to build a model - and more to my point; SO WHAT? Who really cares? It's not like anyone's life or career is at stake. The underlying benefits are far more important than whether or not any one individual failed to meet the technical aspects of the competition.

All I can say is that if the general attitude of most of the members three or four years ago had been like a few I see here now, I, as a newcomer to trueSpace, would have left these forums very quickly and left to fend for myself. I would have missed out on a community of like minded individuals I have come to enjoy and respect.

I sincerely hope this is not a growing trend.

Paul

ps I did not start this thread for further mud slinging; please do not use it for such.

Yes I totally agree with this and I am so glad that you wrote this. For myself I just bite my tounge. Sad really! If you do not have anything good to say, why bother? I hope that something positive will happen soon.

I'd like to apologize for my part in any ill-feelings. While I didn't attack anybody personally, I did get into a debate that wasn't helping matters, and that's something I should have refrained from.

This is a good community, even with the occasional "hiccup" all communities have. I'm glad to be a part of it.

Well said Paul, I'm not going to comment the ongoing speedmodeling philosophy thing any more, I think I made myself clear enough, and some might never get the point or change their opinion. I'm fine with that. I hope my joke entry didn't offend anyone

Every now and again I have to relearn the lessons as well. Generally I end up regretting my own contributions to such dark moments in history. I'm sure I'll have a few more such moments sometime down the road, but minimizing those moments is always a worthy goal.

Agree with your point 3dpdk. The major threads are suffering from the diversions caused by many unnecessary arguements. Makes wading through the traffic all the much harder. A shame since the new forum has much potential for collaboration, etc.

In the end, the forum can only be as good as it's contributors allow it to become.

Gotta give some love to the new Forum's Finest Feature:
The Buddy/ Ignore List.
The Ignore part of it comes in handy in situations like this.
It's in your User CP if you haven't already discovered this little gem for keeping your blood pressure low and the skies over Mudville clear and bright.

I apologize for my remarks to some, others deserved it for "piling on." :)

When I left last May of 06, I expressed my opinion about some British National Rag Mag. I guess people are not entitled to their opinions in the UK.

I'm not going to leave, but it's the same thing all over again. I express my opinion on the way it should be in my mind and I get jumped on by several in the forum.

If you don't like it, express your own opinion but try not attacking me personally. You don't know me and hiding behind a computer hurling insults is only for girly men. :)

Any way that's my opinion of the situation. Don't have to like it and can call me every name in the book you can think of off line, but if it's off topic and might make some one uncomfortable, just PM me.

I figure the only reason people don't want to PM me is they want to get some Trolling points on the matter of "Hey I can smack down JAMESMC TOO!"

This isn't smackdown and you aren't Hulk Hogan, put it to rest.

No prodigy, your english is just fine and you said it pretty well!

That was my main concern. Folks here have complained that the number of registered users does not reflect the number of active users. If I didn't already know that the general attitude here is one of friendship between all members, my current impression would not be so favorable and I probably would be a little hesitant to contribute.

I can see the clouds are breaking up and the sun is shining once more. I suppose it can happen whenever a group of unique individuals get together, whether in reality or virtually; sometimes tempers can get out of hand.

So to any newcomers or prospective newcomers, just ignore the commotion in the other room, as soon as the Koolaid and martinis are served everything will be back to normal.;)
