Woah! This is clearly a hot topic!

@Madmouse; Thanks for your further comments Steve. Like you I would love to get some direct definitive input from Roman even though I know that can be difficult when dealing with subjective artistic preferences.

@Jamesmc; "I hate to say I told you so"? If I were you I'd be enjoying every moment of the opportunity to say I told you so - and you did tell us so!;) ;)

This may be considered a controversial viewpoint but if Roman does enter this conversation I hope he DOESN'T outline the criteria for what he considers to be winning images. If he does there's a danger people will start trying to create within the given brief rather than create the art they feel is right. If people start entering by working to a brief then variety will disappear. By entering the galleries you are essentially entering a competition, if you win, hurray, if you don't, too bad. What is considered great art by one person is considered utter tosh by another, that's the way it goes.

Reminds me in part about a similar artistic topic... music

Music is subjected to almost constant scrutiny with regards to number of weeks on the charts, highest position obtained, etc. Even with that all, everyone has their own taste in music and I most certainly don't agree with some of the #1 songs chosen for a given week even within the genre I like.

I can't even really tell you what I look for in music. I can tell you what I don't like with reasonable certainty, but it becomes difficult to tell you what I think makes a winning album. In this regard, it may be easier for Roman to tell you what a non-winning image lacks than what a winning image contains.

My taste in music has changed with the times and I suspect that 3D art follows an equivalent path in many people's minds too. Comparing ancient gallery winners to current honorable mentions, I'd have to say the bar is definitely being raised over the years. Still some remarkably good images from back then too though.

I gotta admit, I thought there would be a winner as well, with all the hullaballoo(sp?) surrounding this gallery unveiling. I really do intend to get around to using TruePlay, I promise. XD In any case, I was pretty gobsmacked when I saw Robert Plante's entry, and I think it is one of the most beautiful images I've ever seen, I was suprised he didn't win. All that said, I've heard before that if there aren't enough entries in a month, there is no winner, so maybe that was the case? I thought that Robert's entry aside, there were quite a few excellent renders, very much worthy of a winner's award. But it's not my contest, so Roman, you win the pickier than me award. (That's a high honour, as I am notoriously picky. XD)

Better luck next month everybody! (And Prodigy, if you want to win instead of getting "Special Recognition," you've got to submit your images seperately. If you submit a batch of excellent images all at once, you're always going to get a Special Recognition :p ) (Also, Dragonfly is correct. XD)

I did really like all the work in the gallery this month, though!

I think this gallery are becoming on a request job..

We must work on what Roman's like.. and not on how we do our job or what WE like to do....

My watch.. for example was maded on 4 or 5 hours of work.. from the start to the end..

What kind of emotions can have a watch?? non.. 0

But not for Roman who know is 3d.. but for many others who dont know is 3d it is a Real watch and the emotions comes when you find are maded on 3d.. Thats the point..

"In the event that there are not enough quality submissions to each month's Contest, Caligari reserves the right to not choose a winner."

I see clearly quality.. but Roman choose emotions not quality..

"Create a still image or an animation using any Caligari product as your primary tool."

I think that point are missing.

"We are looking for animations and images that make the most of our software's capabilities, and present them in an eye-pleasing manner."

you cant show your software capabilities if the most part of the winners use other softwares like photoshop..
Thats for a Photoshop contest..

Im realy disapointed with the contest.. Realy

Well he sure does have an impressive resume, but he also has an impressive work rate! I'm really not suprised he has as many wins as he does (The Photoshop issue not taken into consideration. I use Photoshop as well, perhaps a little less liberally, but I don't want to start up that ol' argument again. ^^ We're all in the same boat, let's be friends! Specifically, we're all in W!zard's boat. :D)

Obviously his style does appeal to Roman a great deal, and that's really not a huge bother. I know everyone has their own styles, I know I do too, and that's why I think there should be seperate galleries, kind of like 3Dtotal's, but we'd all have to submit an awful lot of pictures every month for that to work. ^^

Anyways, it's unfair to accuse Mssr. Humway of foul play, or Roman for that matter. It is Roman's gallery, and if there's stuff he likes, he can do as he pleases. Some may not agree (Robert Plante should have won this month!) and that's fine too. Everyone's different, which is why this forum's so great!

Matusela...

EHEM... Im not accusing, realy im not.... Maybe sound "ironical" when i post that list, but im not trying to saying nothing and less to accuse digital or roman, im realy calmed and i try to find the answer to what is the best style to win.. Because undertand is not for the best model or if are well excecuted.

I think its Digitaldali likes the surrealism likes dali's do.. Elephants with looong legs.. for example.. for that the name digitaldali.. (my conclusion) I like very much the surrealism..

Digitaldali's Images are very "sofisticated" and have a very good composing..

But to much photoshop.. Its like theres no 3d on their images.. its allways hard to what is in deed 3d and what is post process (My opinion)

The second dont get bad interpretations, i dont express my complain because i NEED TO WIIIIIIIIINN!!!! the galery month. im not feeling like a queen who must be crowned. My complain is why nobody wins if are very good works.. and plus if you call anybody to hear the results... and There's no result.

Its like you miss the cherry on the top of a milkshake!..

And what i hear whas becasue are not expresive, or charged of feelings.. :(

I respect Roman's decition but im not 100% agree on only the best way to win is make wierd images or crazy stuffs.. (talking About surrealism)

Yeah for the animation gallery, the only person who I've seen consistently win was (I believe, but my memory is notoriously spotty) Michael Ford. He makes excellent animations, but the surrealism is astounding. I always feel like I have to go lay down for a few minutes after watching one of his works.

So I agree wholeheartedly that Roman certainly seems to enjoy surrealism, and, while that's not exactly my cup of tea (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=55&highlight=Clank), I respect his love of the art form, and basically resign my cartoonier style to the honourable mentions. ^^

After inputting into HAL 3000 data on all past gallery winners, and after a long period of number crunching and occasional wisps of steam, the computer has come to the conclusion that a caliGallery Winner must contain a certain element.
The secret: Orange Fog.
But you didn't hear that from me.
I'll now depart to an undisclosed location.

I still believe that the solution to this argument is to have no prize for second place but two first prizes. One voted for by Roman the other by the forum members over the following month. If both prizes go to the same image then the winner only gets one prize of course.

This way Roman gets to reward the style of art that he likes to see TS used for, and we have a say in what we think is the best use of TS.

So PLEASE take the time to vote in this poll:-CLICK HERE (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=2327) and maybe drop a few hints and Caligari might follow the wishes of its members/customers.

THIS WAS ROMAN'S IDEA NOT MINE BTW
