In case your not aware... Caligari recently launched an online (trueplace) version of the monthly galleries, and Roman was there at the launch. I spoke to him at length about his criteria for selecting winning images (a thread can be found HERE. (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=2320))
One thing that came out of this discussion was that maybe we should have two winners, one selected by Roman himself, the other voted by the forum members. He seemed open to this idea so I thought that I would post this poll as a sort of trial run.(no prizes I'm afraid :( )
Maybe this is a good time to do this as this month no outright winner was selected by Roman. So please take time to vote. No voting for yourself please, and feel free to vote for no outright winner!
I have left the poll open for the duration of the month.
Please note the titles for the images in the poll are not ones used by their author. They are there to help you tell each images apart and I apologise if they are not to the authors liking.
Just a bit of fun really, but it may be the way to go in the future:-

To me Prodigy's watch was a work of art. The modeling, colors, lighting were done in a way we all strive for. So like a County Fair awarding someone having the largest Pickle, my Ribbon goes to Prodigy.
I think you got a large Pickle in the other contest too.... |

Everything my personal opinion:
1. Robert Plante's picture is really nice. Wouldn't call it a winner but like the composition. 2. Augustos Michelis picture has a nice lighting, good product vizualisation. 3. Stephen May's picture tells me a story, lots of details and of course work. Both of these three I like but each of it has some things I miss before I would call it a winner.
-> 1. this is one I would see in color; trueSpace component is less visible, everything can be done in Photoshop or 2d compositor; even if it is a nice mood I miss some things like a stronger lighting component (sails can be glow a bit), enhance the waterfall flow with rising slight volumetric fog and spume.
->2. The box is too simple, less detailed. Miss detailed structures at the clock in the zoomed version. Something around, I know it's a product vizualisation but I miss something special. Maybe a different camera point of view, more dramatic one.
->3. Miss depth and bit more contrast or lighting enhance to create more glossy points, it looks a bit too flat. Dividing the actors from the background and bring it to eye attention. Volumetric beams are too strong. |

1) Glad to see the mad mouse attitude..
2) The image gallery it became on a Photoshop contest. Remember the winner image from a "snow hill"
4671
I dont want to critic the Thomas work... only show what caligari look on your "emotional first place.."
But this only are for a honorable mention...
4672
The chain have more details than the whole snow scene..
3) Im refuse to send anymore a picture to the contest.. I dont have time to loose any more..
4) Im gonna start to talk not as member of a comunity and yes as a customer..
5) When caligari stop to play with us. im gonna change my attitude..
I remember when i present to the most interesting contest.. caligari promo said with 2 big prices and the honorable mentions have tshirts. and brochures and promotional cubes..
You think caligari send any cube?? not for me.. it lose on space..
HOW CALIGARI can say it gonna send something and then ... dont send what they said??
Incredible.. I say that now because im realy desapointed on how caligari are making the "MARKETING" Things...
I am loosing many hours to translate a trueplace manual to spanish.. and FOR FREE!! why?? because i wanna support caligari..
Know what?? (Sorry Paul Ashingtong, nothing personal, you are a gentleman)
I dont gonna send nothing...
When i see a change on caligari on how treat the caligari members i change again as on the past..
As Steinie... Silent protest..
BTW.. Sorry alien if you found many errors but as you well know when im mad my english go to the hell. |

Interesting idea! Nice to see some more innovative thinking happening here.
This thread could potentially become quite educational.
I voted for Paul Kelly because:
I can't vote for myself
His image struck me as the most artistic.
Augustos watch pictures are undoubtedly excellent examples of fine product representation but are a long way from what I would consider art - They tell no story, contain no mystery and are so indistinguishable from a well-crafted photo that I can't help wondering why not just take a photo?
I also liked Robert Plante's picture artistically but felt it was too dark. I'd be very interested to know who he made it too.
Parva - Thanks for the feedback Marcel. I always enjoy seeing what other people think of my work. |

Yea.. I will send a picture of the box.. and you can see its the same..
Remember.. how many poligons you have.. less oportunitys to win..
Maybe if i present the box closed that be dramatic.. What are inside the box??
a Clown? a hand like on the addams family?? a diamond?!?!?! are 10000 millons of things can fit on that box..
Na.. if are a clock.. its the common idea...

To be fair Augusto that is not what I said Roman had infered..........
He told me he would prefer a scene with 500 polygons with excellent lighting and mood than one with 500000 polygons that was just a well executed project.
3) Im refuse to send anymore a picture to the contest.. I dont have time to loose any more..

Please dont do this Augusto... You are a valued member of this forum and a great artist. I understand that you are annoyed (as am I) but this reaction would be too strong and If it were partly my fault I would be very upset.:( |

Yes.. you may right..
But allways came somebody telling .. Your work is this or that.. and thats is why you dont win..
The snow scene are more dramatic.. are very well excecuted.. better than yours.. and thats is somethin i cant resist..
I like the critics but not the comparations..
And its okay if they dont like our works.. but why join on a presentation?? if they dont gonna pick a winner?? only for make critics and comparations or telling..
I think a non customer of caligari when enter to the site need to see how far they can go with truespace.. not with photoshop
I think roman love the Zachary P. Humway's style.. and now we must move on that way.. i dont want to follow to anybody.. i have my own style..
Look August or September gallery.. and go to any trueplace and you will see the fly with the mushrooms..
This guy win all their pictures.. ALL..is his stile.. not his work., |

Hm, I personally think it's just fun to enter the contest and be a part of something as permanent as the gallery...can't deny that it would be fun to win someday, but since I know that I'll always be competing with the rest of you and your talents, I never expect to win. Softens the blow when the results are announced :D
One thing I'm sure of is that I wouldn't want to be the one picking a winner !
Especially if a criteria is mood or composition because that is something my brain doesn't compute at all ;)
This month I had a lot of favourites (Prodigy, Robert, Stephen, Stanislav), and each had something I was impressed with...so I'm as confused as the rest that none was the winner. |

I am so lucky that i don't have to decide which picture is the best. Seriously, how can one even compare art? Who was the better artist and made the better pictures? Da Vinci? Van Gogh? Keith Haring? What makes a perfect picture? Used techniques? Used colours? Used style? Unique idea?
I couldn't decide that! Art is highly subjective! Let ten people decide and you get one result. Let ten other people decide and you get a completely different result.
From my point of view it is the best to let Caligari decide that. It is after all also a thing of marketing their product with the winner pictures ... |

When there is no one winner then all are winners maybe :) . I have to agree with prodigy, comparison of different compositions and styles and art should not be done. Having members vote on who is a winner could lead to debates, arguments and what not, I HOPE NOT! Different ways and ideas in how to modify and maybe enhance or tell a different story and maybe making the scene convey something totally different could be most helpful for all of us. The forums here I think have been very resposible and encouraging for beginners and pro's alike in this, but if it goes to critic after critic then the spirit here would probably die.
Oh, I couldn't vote, missing - All are winner category :D |

I take an odd stand on this one. If you look at the Gallery and decide the winner based on who demonstrated their skills using the tools in Truespace the winners would be different. But that was already discussed. Now the Gallery is an Art contest nothing more. Now you have to judge it based on mood, style, hocus pocus. |

When judging a contest it's always a good idea to give critical review.
Picking a winner without explanation to the non winners is kind of lame.
Something to the effect,
Good composition, but I see mistakes in the mesh
I see no continuity here, don't know where to start
Great piece of work, I like the effective use of shadows
Good, good - maybe in time your dream will come sooner than later
Lots of talent, you just need to channel that energy into artistic statement
All pretty generic statements, but at least some feedback.
In the case of no winners chosen, offer a explanation.
Like, I couldn't decide and re-enter this next month to see how it compares with other compositions.
I was looking for something that displays the capability of my new product and rendering and I didn't see it. |

Now you have to judge it based on mood, style, hocus pocus.
And orange fog and green eggs and ham, don't forget that!
But seriously, I think it's actually a good thing that the criteria for what makes a winner are a bit ambiguous. To have a set list of elements that must be included in each winner would just be 'teaching to the test'.
Steinie, you are correct, it is an 'Art Contest', and by it's nature it's going to be subjective. So, do you as the artist strive to produce what you think will please the palate of the judge, or do you create what satisfies your own goals for each work? I admit I've done both with many submissions, and the outcome is always a surprise. I've literally worked months on a project, modeling, harvesting textures, lighting, re-lighting, endless renders, and finally submit what I'm sure is a masterpiece of modeled, textured, lit-by-the-Golden-Hour composition that's oozing emotional baggage, ...and it straggles into the bottom row of the Honorable Mentions. Then some other time, I hurridly submit an unfinished WIP, and I'll be damned if it doesn't win. I can't figure it out why one image wins over another, and I'm beginning to think that's actually a good thing. Ultimately, the important things about each project is whether or not I've learned a new technique, or mastered a new tool, or found a way to speed up the process, or successfully conveyed an idea and captured a slice of life in my image.
Look, it's a fun contest with friendly competition and from what I have experienced a lot of back-channel cooperation and collaboration.
You have the choice of some extremely generous prizes if you do win, and 'fame' if not fortune if you 'place' or 'show'.
Create what you like-do the best that you can- and don't worry about trying to figure out what Roman likes or expects to see in a 'winner'.
I've spent years trying, and I'm rarely right.
In retrospect, should there have been a clear winner for the first ever truePlay Monthly caliGallery Opening? I'd say, yes, there probably should have. Maybe there was a rush to rollout the new Space, or maybe the month really "was too short", perhaps the boss was preoccupied with certain software development already in progress...However, there's always next month...
Setting up polls and voting on a 'People's Choice' winner is fine, but I wouldn't expect Caligari to supply any additional prizes for what potentially could turn into a popularity contest. |

This point has probably already been made, but haven't we already deduced what Roman looks for in a winner? :D So we don't really need a list of criteria do we? We've got 3 years of entries to tell us what they want.
Anyway, I'm all for a forum voted winner in addition to Caligari's winner.

For a forum competition. The idea is good, but not sure I like the current Poll-way...
Am I the only one that thinks it's better not to win in the Caligari competition and not knowing why is better than to see that nobody voted on it ( I'm sensitive ;) )..... is there any way to make the poll result hidden and after a end-date, only show the winner?
Because then it would be a GREAT idea !
I would (still) also like a non-competition forum gallery like ZBrush have.
A big thumbnail page with images from Finished and Wip, because I feel like I'm missing a lot of great artwork just because the thread title didn't "POP" or that they move down the list. ( and since I'm getting older, I sometimes know that I've seen something good...but can't remember where and who it was that did it...:o ) |

A very good point Lars and I agree. If this does progress then it would be much better to keep the voting secret. Maybe Norm can help in this matter.

I think I'll try to be more accomadating. I'm going to do a piece or two using nothing but Truespace...NO photoshop. Anyone have any ideas??? Just shoot'em my way if you do.
Also, I'll start putting all my artwork in the forums instead...at least for a while. I personally think you guys are amazing. I certainly don't want to do anything to cause any animosity.
Sheesh, all you had to do was ask!:p

DigitalDali, First I have nothing against your work and I think you do an amazing job. How you do it and what tools you use are up to you. The determining factors on what is getting represented as TS work is my real issue not you. Heck you have a great thing going why change.
My feelings are well documented and if you take them personally I'm sorry. The intent was toward Caligari not you.
Here is why I think Caligari is coping out. If they allow entries done with other programs they don't have to improve their own program and make it better. Why can't TS model like Silo or Hexagon. Why does TS crash when you model but in other programs it doesn't? Why use PS if TS could do it as well? They tell us it can do all these things why can't it? How many versions were released with a defective Bone system until they acknowledged it? Their putting a lot of effort in 7.5 and I want to make sure that old habits are not repeated. Why do I have to save before doing anything in TS? Stop blaming the user and fix it.
Yes I'm more then a little mad about what is allowed in the Gallery. Hopefully more of you will realize why I'm doing this. Sorry. |

It's cool, I don't take it personally (actually, I don't take much of anything personally:p )I understand where you're coming from. As far as modelling capabilities, I think 7.5 will have pretty competitive model-painting like in Hexagon 2 and Silo 2 (something ZBrush has had for quite a while...and I think Maya introduced that 2 or 3 versions ago).
As far as matte painting in PS, no other 3d program has incorporated it. I think TS is getting right on top of things with 7.5. You're right, there are some glitches that need to be addressed. All and all, though, I still always come back to TS.
I'm currently working on a piece for the purists. I'm also doing it for myself; to refamiliarize myself with the true capabilities of the program (instead of just working on tone and values an' stuff in PS). When I'm done, I'll post screen shots of the piece in the forums. I've already thought of some pretty creative ways of getting what I want by JUST using TS. I hope everyone will like it:) |

So, umm, maybe someone answered this already but how do we vote for a winner of the monthly galleries if we don't see all the entries until after Caligari has made their decision and posted their own gallery winners?
And do we need to have the poll open a whole month?
Anyway, just a thought.
