I found a wonderful site called Help2go.com (http://www.help2go.com) where you post a thread detailing your symptoms and such and they walk you through how to fix it in great detail. They even cater to n00bs such as myself! I know we're not supposed to promote other sites and stuff, but you can't run TrueSpace if your computer's bogged down with spyware!
I go to them every time I pick up a piece of spyware or adware or whatever. And best of all, they're free!
I hope I helped somebody in posting this. ^^ |

I know this may sound somewhat cynical, but the thought that occurred to me when I read this was: if they're that good, why don't they tell you how to reduce the risk of further infections? |

It's free and easy to use. Enjoy :)

They do, I just don't listen to them. XD
I have, on occasion, downloaded stuff with Limewire and as everyone knows (or certainly should know!) Limewire stuff is crap as often as not. I picked up a rather persistent trojan from what was supposed to be a game demo on there, and the lads over there really helped me through it.
By the way, if anyone here ever picks up the Vundo Trojan, you can just ask me, as I'm pretty well versed in killing that bugger as of yesterday. XD |

They've moved server since you saved that link, the new link is:

Ah, so probably not much point in telling you to get Kaspersky anti-virus (http://www.kaspersky.com/) then?

Never used that particular software myself, partly because of having heard the reason you mention.

I've had my system infected only once in the last few years, & that was only because I trusted the wrong anti-virus prog [a freebie via a deal my ISP had organised]. |

I found a software that automatically downloads and installs all the latest Spyware,Adware,Trojans and Viruses. For thoose that think that their computers and internet is way too fast and want to both get and give even more spam... now, where is that link, I'm sure many wants to download it ;) :p
Ok, bad joke
I'm using Norton Internet security and it seems to work fine... though I might download Ad-Aware or Spybot to verify that.
(though I'm not sure how smart Ad-Aware is....one time it wanted to delete a sound file in one of my games.... the filename was Gator.wav ! :p )
Also good to know about the help site :D |

Alien uses the latest in spy ware protection.
After all, he visits those wild lagomorph porn sites which displays ancient customs of inwardly directed naked aggression towards malocclusion prevention by gnawing on wooden peg legs of dead pirates. |

I use Ad-Aware, SpyBot and MS Defender, kinda a redundancy thing. I use them at different times MS Defender does a scan every night, the other 2 I run manually as I feel up to it. Every so often I catch something good and one of them sees it and than takes care of it... I've had more than my fair share of problems over the years. Nice Website link, I've been meaning to do a system cleanup, this site will be a great aide for that.

There's no substitute for a decent virus scanner and firewall (and if you're not sure about a file, scan it before you run it!) but an occasional run with ad-aware (www.lavasoft.de) and then a blast with Ccleaner (www.ccleaner.com) will help to keep your system (and registry) clean from unnecessary clutter |

Yeah, I've used Ad-Aware in the past, but for a specific anti-spware prog I use SpyBot nowadays.

LMAO, no, not into bucktoothed bunny porn, sorry to disappoint you. I just have a similar approach to "demos" as Methuselah, except I'm a bit more careful. :)

As Kaspersky keeps an eye on anything that wants to "dial out" & doesn't let it unless you give it permission, I just use XP's firewall.

Yeah, I like CCleaner, mostly for being able to do a better job of deleting temporary internet files than Windows does, & also being able to delete cookies, whilst having a safe list for ones you don't want to delete.
Aside from Kaspersky, & SpyBot I also use Proxomitron & DNSKong. Plus, I don't use IE for browsing, I use Maxthon & Firefox. Admittedly Maxthon does use IE's core, but Maxthon has a much better popup blocker, & also an ad-blocker that can block pretty much anything you want it to - it isn't just limited to banners or images of specific sizes like some ad-blocking software, though it's unlikely [though not impossible, I'm not that naïve] anything malicious would get past all 3 of the other progs stuff has to go through before getting to my browser [DNSKong, Proxomitron, & Kaspersky].
Oh, & as for spam, MailWasher is my weapon of choice. |

Hahaha! You've found me out! I'll have a look at that Kaspersky software, thanks for the link!
I don't mean that help site to be a complete replacement for anti-virus or anti-spyware programs, mostly as a supplement. Most Spyware programs can't completely kill a piece of spyware if it's persistent enough or severe enough, and that's where that site comes in. They usually have you download this fantastic piece of software called Hijack This, which lists every running process on your computer and its respective .dll. Using this program, you can also stop the process, and then go delete the .dll, effectively destroying the piece of spyware. The only reason it's not completely intuitive is that the names of the .dll's are usually something like "asdgfasldfg.dll" so that's why you use the guidance of the fellows at that site, so you only delete the right stuff. ^^ |

Given your downloading habits, may I suggest you don't have your computer/speaker volume turned up too loud when scanning, unless you enjoy jumping out of your skin. The sound file they use to indicate an infection is designed to get your attention, something it does rather well. :)

Yeah, Spybot couldn't get rid of the 1 that got past NetGuard, spywarequake, so I disabled it myself. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alien42/smilies/ninja03.gif Then used Kaspersky to clean up any remaining traces of it.
As a side note, if anyone here is in the UK & has Virgin Media as their ISP [used to be NTL/TeleWest], they'd be better off paying the quite reasonable £24/year for Kaspersky, than putting their trust in VM's PCguard [the new name for NetGuard]. |
