I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this post, so appologies if not.

I'm looking for 3D models of the Chess figures from Harry Potter's first movie. At the end of the movie, Harry and his friends had to take part in a game of Chess and all I can say is, those are the best Chess figures I've seen in my whole life. They are so detailed, so sinister looking, so COOL!! The first Harry Potter movie is the only one in the series I've bought on DVD and I swear, I've nearly worn out the disc from constantly playing that Chess game over and over again.

I've love to have the figures in 3D to do some art work and animations with. Of course, COB is the file format that would be best, but I'll take them in any format. I've been searching the net for weeks looking for them, without success. Does anyone have them, or know where I can get them?

Thanks.

Paul this may sound odd, but my daughter has started to collect these chess pieces by subscription (to be collected in the local supermarket). They come as real figurines. But, as children often do, she forgot to order the rest after 6 or so pieces. They look good but they are not digital. I can try and ask her to find some in the mess she creates in her room:( , if you are interested and take some pictures, even try to find the producer of these things. But, as I say, they're real, and incomplete.

I doubt you will get the digital models amywhere but from Warner or the digital effects company. Some things like phones and tv's can usuall be found amongst the free 3d models but rarely anything as 'important' as this.

There are some free programs that will generate models from numerous camera shots but you would need all the figurines...and a lot of spare time to get them into your PC...

It would take some time to do a quality model like this, but it is doable.

You could model this using the same style without copying each element of the original so no copyright infringement is incurred.

It might be a challenge to do so. Start with the chessboard is what I would do.

If you can spend the time to get some detailed drawings or pictures of the models, put them up here and let everyone know, I am sure in a short amount of time members would be able to make the full set. I know that I would give a couple of them a go as practice. It's always fun to try to model different styles of characters.

With TS7.5 having character animation tools, we could have a complete set of the chess pi8eces on the forums here and eventually animations for them :). Very awesome community project.

Give us a chance to finish the space station (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=2340) first! (Also join in, if you've got the time!)

Wow, thanks for all the feedback, I certainly wasn't expecting to get this many replies.

Improv, thanks for the links to the Battle Chess games. Boy, do they bring back memories of playing Battle Chess on the Amiga 500.

Burisman, no need to bother your daughter about digging out the pieces, though thanks for the offer. There is a magazine on the shelves of our local news agents ever week or so which is slowly releasing the entire collection. The detail on the pieces are superb and you get two a week. So I'm slowly getting a physical collection together.

Vizu, thanks for the link, I am aware of it. But they only ship within the USA, I'm in Ireland.

Splinters, thanks for the info. Can't really see WB giving away their property, though they may be willing to release the models for a price for people interested in them... Umm, perhaps not. Might just drop them a line and see if I can make any headway in that area. Also, great idea about the photo-to-3D programs out there. I don't actually have one of these at the moment, but once I get the whole Chess set collection, I may invest in one (price will be a consideration).

JamesMC, I have considered modelling these figures myself but I'll be the first to put my hand up and admit that my 3D skills are average. The work I see in the monthly 3D gallery and on the forums here leaves my creations to shame so I really couldn't do the figures justice at the moment. Though I think I could get the Chess board made ;).

Rich, great idea, but would it really be something the whole community would be interested in? After all, I'm just one guy who has totally fallen in love with these epic pieces and wants them for my own person use. Don't think it would be fair to ask the forum members to create them for me, not unless everyone had an interest in creating them.

Methusela, best of luck with your project :).

3D versions of these figures do seem to be non-existant at the moment. Hopefully down the line, I'll get them, or create them myself.

Thanks for all the feedback, really appreciate it.

Well, if you ever decide to put together the set, I would not mind trying my hand at a couple of the characters. I thought they were interesting also when I watched the movie.

I have a couple of WIP characters here in the WIP section, I'm not the best, but I think my modeling is decent enough :)

Hope to hear from you on this soon :D

I know it's not Harry Potter, & it's not animated either, except for the pieces sliding into position, but there's a free chess prog called Brutal Chess (http://brutalchess.sourceforge.net/). It comes with some [rather ordinary, I'm afraid] models in .obj format, & also they say it can use Quake 3 MD3 files as well.

Better than nothing, & something people might want to play around with, & presumably you could put your created pieces in & play with them, although as I said, no animations. :)

<edit>
Apparently there will be animation, it's just not in there yet, & they're looking for people to help with modeling & animation as well.

Here's a quickie on a Harry Potter Rook. Got in a hurry and buried the spectacles in the face. :(

I threw in the cob file in case you wanted to play with it.

The rook part is just a low poly, non subdivided object. Marble Shader

The figure is a boy Poser figure painted with a gold Shader.

Basically just a hexagon shaped object extruded up, nothing fancy. Plopped some rectangles on top.heh
