Hi Folks.

I remember a few years ago I was looking at a website of commercial (I think) plugins for TrueSpace and there was a plugin for shattering objects. The example movie showed a pane of glass, a rock hitting it and the object suddenly shattered into loads of polygons that fell to the floor.

I've tried a Google search but can't seem to find any mention of the plugin. Can anyone direct me too it please?

Hrm...

Well when I first saw your subject line, I thought of the old "Exploder" standalone plugin, but after reading your post...

I'm not sure that I remember that one. BUT, that's not to say it doesn't/didn't exist.

It is possible to do it in tS6.6+ using Physics Simulation and the Knife tool from CK Game Factory, but I'm assuming you want a more automated plugin? ie. one that you just set up the parts and it does the breaking and such?

Seems like a tough one to me. The plugin would have to know where to "break up" the object and add new geometry at those locations, and do collision detection on each piece, etc.

I would like to know if there was such a plugin for trueSpace. You've got me interested too, Paul!

:)

EDIT: Check out some of the clips on this page: http://www.caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts65/Brochure/animation.asp?Cate=BAnimation

Is that anything close to what you are talking about?

we did discuss that concept awhile back
http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=1234&highlight=glass+breaking

as for the plugin, I've never heard of Shatter or anything like it other than Exploder, as Frank mentioned. TrueParticles and Primal Particles have a fragmentation function which I remember seeing an animation for, similar to what you are describing. It was a bullet going through glass done with Primal Particles I think.

Not sure if this is the one you mean, vcTNT. by Virtual Caledonia, can be found here (http://www.virtualcaledonia.com/vctnt/vctnt_index.htm) I haven't used it so I don't know how it works.

You beat me to it. :) I knew there was something that looked as if it might do the job amongst the various Paks, but couldn't remember what it was, or which Pak it came with [although it can be bought seperately from VC for $29.99]. Found it eventually after trawling through them all, though why they bundled it with the rayPak is a mystery to me, I would have thought it would be more appropriate in the fxPak.

I haven't tried it either [though I have got it, just never got round to trying it]. Unfortunately Caligari haven't updated the plugin compatibility page to show whether or not they'll work with 7.11, but I might give it a go later if I have time. It says it works with the tS physics engine, so it might only work with the Model side physics.

It would be good if Caligari could talk VC into upgrading it to work with Player/Workspace physics, as they're supposed to be improved in a bunch of ways [TBH, I haven't used either version of the physics at all :o]. Either that or maybe someone could come up with something using the LE/scripts.

Hi Paul. I believe the broken glass was created using the knife tool from the Monster Toolkit. Was it Zac Mansfield that created the animation? That animation is also included with 6.6, in one of the folders. The cool thing about the knife tool is you can select two points on a cube, and the points on the parallel face of the cube are also selected. It is a much faster way to break up objects.

IT IS on the DEPAK cd:

Compatibility with 7.11 is much the same as with 6.6 - this was the reason for the bridge etc, so that old plugins could still be used and those who had invested in them would still get the benefit.

You have to use them in the "modeler" side, but most work just as they did in tS6.6. I think even Motion Studio works under tS7 too, I think I remember some post about that (that's not on our paks, just a popular item).

Yeah, that's it! I felt that I had this movie on a CD and after a bit of rooting around I found it on the Inside TrueSpace 2 & 3 book disc. It's done with Primal Particles. I saw this years ago, back when I was using TrueSpace 2, so that's why I got mixed up. It's not a specific shattering plugin.

However, thanks for all the info and different approaches to this. I particulary like the vcTNT plugin, it really looks promising and it's not too expensive. Shame there isn't a trial version of it to download and test out first, but I think I'll look into this plugin.
