Has anyone else noticed the clues that 7.5 is close to release? Now I'm not privy to any information so this is my speculation based on what I'm seeing.
1) The new UV Mapping has been brought up and and that never has happened.
2) The focus on the main page is now the Captains Blog
3) TS 7.5 was scheduled for release the end of 2006. Summer Vacations are coming in the next few months (people leave home and spend money elsewhere)
4) Tax Return Money is NOW
5) My Abacus told me so
Edit:
6) More and more 7.5 work is now being shown by testers. |

Delighted to see the focus on TrueSpace 7.5 is on the main Caligari page now. However, I'm a bit concerned that on that page, hair and fun seem to be one and the same. I've said this before, the new hair tools look great, but they don't look like fur at all. Really hope the hair tools are not also the fur tools. Can we get any comment on this from Caligari? |

Possibly with different settings it would look more like fur? |

Pssst Paul,
Want to know how hard it is to make hair?
http://web.cs.wpi.edu/~emmanuel/courses/cs563/write_ups/curtf/hair/rendering_hair.htm
1) Whats the difference between Hair and Fur? (Length, Quantity, Density, Color?)
2) Do you have a machine that can handle what you ask for?
3) Notice Fur and Hair used to describe the same thing.
Over the Hedge...
"We've certainly had fur on characters before, but we haven't had this many with long fur, which creates an extraordinary level of complexity," explains Visual Effects Supervisor, Craig Ring. "Each strand of fur is a little piece of geometry, and the longer it is, the more it interacts with all the surrounding hairs and the more complicated it is to render."
or "Take a hedge with 25 million leaves, a raccoon with 1.6 million pieces of fur and a hairy cast of characters, and you've got a highly complex movie that could choke lesser workstations."
In the attached photo what is hair and what is fur and why? |

WOW  Steinie, thanks for that link. This article not only tells a story about the modeling of hair (or fur, for that matter) but also makes me aware in general of the staggering amount of complicated maths that is needed to do seemingly simple things in 3D. Increases my respect for the guys at Caligari. I can imagine that you more advanced guys can't wait for the next release to come out, but I, having the feeling of only having an elemental grasp of less than 10% of the application right now, only think, aaaahr! more things to learn... :o |

The key is, if it is done right, it would be so easy and fun to use that you would love to use it. That should be the goal of all 3D programs.

Difference between fur and hair (in CG in general) is only in shape of a strand and material.
When you make star like strand and add alpha transparent material with several 100 of strands in one texture, you can get pretty dense fur without actually rendering every strand separately. |

Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate the complexity behind bringing hair and fur to a 3D model. I'm the guy who buys the 2 disc DVD versions of all the 3D movies so he can see how they were made and then goes and tries to copy it. Over The Hedge was a truly amazing movie. Though I think, currently, the fur crown goes to Monsters Inc.
Anyway, back on topic here, I guess I was hoping for more realistic fluffy furry fur then dense hair based fur. I was hoping we'd get something like Sasquatch for Lightwave, in TrueSpace 7.5
http://www.worley.com/E/Products/sasquatch/sas_gallery.html
This plugin really does do fur amazingly and it's very fast rendering a lot of dense fur in seconds. I was just hoping we'd get some sort of fur along this line. If hair base fur is the way 7.5 will deliver, can I possibly ask if anyone on the BETA team, Roman, or anyone else, can direct me to a pic showing hair based fur in action? You see, I have Poser 5 and the hair I see in TrueSpace 7.5 is the same as Poser 5's hair. Now, this is great for hair, but it's hopeless at doing fur. And this is not just me saying it, I did ask on a Poser forum many months back about was it possible to do fur using Poser's hair, but no one could help. Roman has been kind enough to show us the hair in action, any chance of seeing some fur? |

Well, that is indeed something to look forward to, can you imagine all the fluffy creatures populating the WIP threads when this kind of plugin would be unleashed for TS...? |

Well, we cant expect a stunning amazing plugin to make Monsters inc.. maybe on the future with more development.. We must be realistics.. Yes im one of those guys who wants fur.. Lets see what the future brings... ;)
I think make Fur is not a problem.. The problem is make those hairs dinamics to make an animation.. THATS the point..
As i say in other post..
Whats the diference between Fur and Hair or Grass??
I think the grass is on the floor and is green and the hair is brown and is over a head.. and the fur is allover the body... :D
But make those hairs dinamics are the most important point.. but belive is not posible on this version.. But realy i dont know what the 7.5 gonna bring.. |

Just got in late so no real time to tweak but this is Vray fur in 7.5. Remember, 3 quick tests here...:D
First is short, straight hair, second a little longer and softer. For the third I messed with variation settings for length, density etc. but nothing too wild.
More later maybe. |

Thanks Trueblue, with some more work these could look really good. Anyway it is very late here so just one final example with the softness ramped up quite a bit more. Hope this will satiate the fur curiosity a little bit...:D |

Well the LW/Worley(steve) version of hair/fur is a post process effect...no reflections with poor GI hackery..what Caligari is offering is a bit better in some respects to what is in other software(MAX has the option, but it's poorly implemented). Real geometry = real GI/reflections/depth calculations..in the long run this is the better approach IMHO, besides it's going to be it's first run...there is always a posibility of improvement. |

I submit Truespace verision 5 and 7 |

Paul,
Sasquatch looks great and only cost $500 as a plugin!
I don't think were getting something that nice, however the new TS hair/fur features might not have been explored yet. Your not alone with your wishes, my organic creatures are cold!!!:)
P.S. Don't respond to this last comment:
