Hooo its a secret heheheh...
But im gonna show to the comunity very soon on a tutorial :D
But i think are few users who know how i make the fur or grass..
Stay Tuned !! hehehehe
Looks very much like consecutive shells with a transparency map applied.
By the way, any 7.5 beta images you see can only be looked at. Testers are allowed to post final renders but not comment on them or how they were created. Not our rules! |

Personally, I'd prefer a particle based fur system. It would (hopefully) be a lot easier to control artistically and would render faster.
Of course best would be to have both. But no mater which, the most important thing is that it produce good visual results right out of the box and without extensive tweaking/modification.
I'd like to see a "clumping" type system that allows control of groupings of hairs/fur via control splines...

And this is the old alphahair.tsx and lightworks in 7.11. Two minutes work. Fur is always available if you want it bad enough...:) |

Wohoo!! I've started another debate! LOL!
Thanks for all the info and the pics. I have to admit, the fur that has been shown above have been very damn impressive (why can't I get these results in Poser 5?!?).
I can't recall who said what so I'll just comment on points made.
Point taken about Sasquatch costing US$500. It would take me forever to save that much and I personally think it's a bit expensive for a single plugin, regardless of how nice it looks.
Point also taken that this is the first outing for hair/fur in TrueSpace so down the road it should improve. But since I'm getting ready to pounce on 7.5 and probably won't do another TrueSpace jump till TrueSpace 10 or so, it would be nice to have great fur in 7.5.
And yes, LOL, I got a good laugh at the idea of the WiP forum becoming Furby-ville! LOL!
One small point raised (by Prodigy) was the render time. His furry blue ball he said took five minutes to render. Ouch!! If a single sphere takes this long, imagine how long a whole furry scene would take. And animations... (faints!!)
But thanks for sharing the info and the pics in particular. I really do appreciate that.
Your not alone with your wishes, my organic creatures are cold!!!:)
LOL! Steinie, without a doubt, one of the best quotes I've read in a long time. Will have to remember it ;). |

Paul..
1) im using Polygons.. about 30.000. hairs.. to much i think.. 5 Minutes its a very good speed if you think any hair produce shadows and other hairs recive shadows and im using Global Illumination with Light bounces..I never imagine render that scene on Lightworks on that quality EVER..
2) I think the TS7.5 work much much better because the hairs on the 7.5 came from the head.. if you see carfully my hairs are to any directions. Other point i think are more optimized than my way.. but because i dont have 7.5 as any other "common" user we must work with what we had next to us..
About the alphahair.tsx i cant find anithing about that or a download site.. |

Thanks for for expanding on your model, Prodigy. As for Hair.tsx, I've just nabbed it by entering alphahair.tsx into www.yahoo.com. The very first link looks like it may lead to a gallery of images for it but if you click it, a window will open to download it. |

That plug-in is great, it'd work so well for grass. I really can't wait for 7.5 now, gonna have to start saving my pennies.
BTW.... don't want to change the subject too much but with the new collaboration stuff in TS, has anyone thought of grouping together to do some animation? Might come in handy with the render times from all the new hair! |

@Steinie
The article you posted was a very interesting read, but it seemed a bit dated and the results would be more what I wouldn't want to see in tS.
I'd be more interested in an artist's solution than a mathematician's. Realistically speaking what I'm looking for is some kind of spline based system that controls flow and shaping groupings of hairs and maybe collision objects for assisting with animation.
My guess is that for real-time work, alpha mapped planes are still going to be the best solution. ;)

Wow.. Now i remember this plugin.. but never use it realy... Impresive results.
IS better and more flexible than my way..
I think this is better
Here is an example.. as you can see the fur cames from the sphere..
30.000 fur GI + SpotLight.. about 1 min with vray.

The Alphahair.tsx is pretty good, once you get used to it.
I used it to make this chap a few years back... |

A furly interesting thread. I've often wondered how to do fur in tS and have thought out a couple of methods. Here's what happened with my first tries.
The top image took all of 12 minutes from stat to finish using a polygon plane and the wonderful geometry paint tool - which is what I suspect Prodigy's secret grass method is. Obviously Augusto is far better at this than I am!
The second picture took a lot longer - an hour or so and was much slower to render. Alphamapped NURBS cylinders, caps removed, used geomtry paint to make a group. Centred groups axis at the same coordinates as the sphere. Then used copy and rotate to populate the sphere with more tufts.
This is the results of some very quick experiments with tS 6.6. With a bit of refinement I think you could get some good results (but I wouldn't want to try to animate this!)
Of course the ultimate, ultimate clue to tS7.5's impending release is the emails offering preorder upgrade prices. Sadly :( my financial reality is that I can afford to keep up the payments on my computer equipment or I can buy software upgrades - but not both at the same time!! Therefore it'll be a while before I can arrange to upgrade to 7.5 and take advantage of the new character tools.:( . By which time the price will have gone up. :(
The good news is that there is still plenty of ways to make good stuff with tS 6.6 and 7.1 :)

I animated hair balls here (bottom left entry)
http://www.caligari.com/Gallery/Animations/2006/aug/default.asp?Cate=GAnimations
Nothing great but fun to do! No Echidnas were harmed....
All done with my 1.2 Ghz computer and my first experiment with animation using TS. |

What the email didn't show us...
Well Paul the Email announcing new features for 7.5 specifically says "hair" with no mention of fur. edit (I know it's just a wording issue)
I didn't see any mention of the UV editor and it's new features.
No mention of using premade motions with their new character animation.
VRay support may or may not be ready on 7.5 release date.
I would LOVE to hear feedback on lockup or errors that have historically been a nemesis in TS. If that is reduced or eliminated I won't give Roman love I'll sleep with him! |

I have a question to all the guys that makes the cool hair stuff with alphahair.
Can anyone please tell me how i have to use this PlInn ?
I take a sphere and klick on different buttons and in the workspace i can see the hairsplines ? but on rendering i see only my sphere, no fur or hair.
No my sphere havn´t hair loss ;) |

Just wanted to take a quick moment and point out that now might not be a bad time to consider joining proTeam.
I don't have any official info, but I suspect that there will be a slew of new training videos because of the new UI and the focus on the new hair and animation features -- well probably after the guys at Caligari recover from the current release...:p
And unless I'm mistaken, you'd be covered for all upcoming releases up to and including 8.0. And if I remember right PT members get special pricing on things like GamePak and Vray (right, right? ;))
Plus as a bonus you get to play with 7.5 Beta :D :D

I think it is very interesting that pre-ordering TS7.5 gets you a copy of TS6.6 while you wait instead of a copy of TS7. This seems to suggest that version 7.5 is different enough from version 7 (or 7.11) that Caligari doesn't want first time users to bother to learn it.
When Caligari says you're better off learning TS6.6 and then going straight to TS7.5, you know some good things are coming.
I'm very excited. |

Was wondering if proteam and beta members NDA was lifted to some extent? Maybe you guys can show us some stuff that Roman hasn't had the time (that's if you have time and NDA is lifted). One of the things I'm still curious about is the uv tools and they have really only been mentioned but maybe that's the plan as in there may be more than originally thought? |
