Shame about TSXtrude link - that's a handy little plug for doing exactly what you're talking about.

If you have Vue the terrain editor in Vue will create a terrain from a picture (bmp, tga, jpeg etc) which you can then edit using Vues terrain editor. Vue will export the terrain as a .COB mesh which you can import into tS and away you go. I find this method is quite flexible.

You may be able to use Bryce in a similar way.

Hope this helps

Johny made tS7 script that does what you want.

trueScape sounds like it might do the trick. Pretty much like having the Bryce terrain editor right inside trueSpace. It's on my dePak but I don't see it listed on the dePak page so whether it's missed from the list or not on there anymore I don't know. Don't have a link just for the standalone version.

Alternatively, have a look at trueDisplacement, that should do what you want. You can get it from the fab CK Game Factory here http://ckgamefactory.hp.infoseek.co.jp/tsxe/truedisp.html. It's also on the dePak and the dePak pages show it being used on a plane to generate the sort of thing you want rather than on a sphere on the CK pages.

You can use terragen (http://www.planetside.co.uk) (free) with the firmament plugin to import bitmaps and export the terrain as .lwo file which can be read by tS. There's also a plugin to import terragen terrains into tS (U|V The I/O collection).

Just to add one more option, my ImageReader Python extensions has an example that uses my Mesher Python extension to create heightfield from a mandelbrot fractal image.
