Has anyone had any experience with selling their models on Turbosquid??
I have been considering giving it a go as I have many models collecting dust and thought I might be able to make them work for me.
If I remember correctly John Logan has posted a free model or two but did you ever try selling any John?
When I look at some of the models for sale a lot of them seem... er... shall we say less than great ;) and seem quite expensive. Maybe these don't sell but I would like to think that if my models were reasonably priced they would sell o.k.
So basically has anyone ever tried it??????? |

Yes, I have tried it a few years back, and actually made a little money, selling a few models.. The only thing I dont like is they take 50% of your sale. You might be better off setting up a paypal account, My sales rose over 300% after setting that up, Its free and they only take a small percentage per each transaction. Hope that helps. |

I have a model for sale - I sell it on Turbosquid, and I sell it directly too. The prices are different - Turbosquid charge more :) Even with the 50%, I make more from Turbosquid, since they advertise and people use them as a kind of standard search.
I only have one model on there, and I sure don't make a lot, but I do make some. If I had more models on there, and if they sold the same as my other one, then it could be quite a nice supplemental. So I recommend it as a good idea :)
And you could do it non-exclusive like me and sell elsewhere too (exclusive, ie only through TurboSquid, gets you a bigger percentage from TurboSquid sales, but means you can't sell it anywhere else of course, up to you there though!).

If I recall, John did have some problems with Turbosquid.
He'd put out models at a very reasonable cost in .cob format and Turbosquid would inevidibly raise the prices of his items much higher when they found out how good the models were. Probably too much $ involved for them to pass up the opportunity.
John would have to tell you the particulars as it would be no more than heresay from me.

Thanks for the answers guys,
I have a model for sale - I sell it on Turbosquid, and I sell it directly too. Have you got a link to it Tom? I'd be interested to see the model and how you priced it, if you don't mind?
Thanks for the links Mr Bones, I'll give them a look. I'm just dipping my toe in the water at the moment and although Turbosquid might take a large percentage, it seems easy enough to do. So I think I'll stick with them to start with.
Thanks again.

I've had my WWII Pack up on TS since it came out:
OG WWII Pack (http://www.turbosquid.com/FullPreview/Index.cfm/ID/302888)
I also use www.the3dstudio.com, as they give a better rate. I've had very few sales with this pack on these two sites (made many more selling them directly to the FPSC and Torque crowds). One of the things that seems to be going is furniture (for the architectural viz crowd) and buildings (for the same reason), as well as good vehicle models.
I get newsletters for sellers occassionally from the3dstudio; it lets us know what type of model/media is selling more at the time. I was also involved in a private focus group at Turbosquid, hosted by one of their marketing people. The group was pretty diverse (I believe I was the only game-oriented artist there), although small. Some of the changes you now see at TS are a direct result of our input.
The big thing to remember is to use as many "keywords" as possible; even if the associated word is a stretch...use it. There is a limit to the number of keywords you can use, but it's quite large. Occassionally, placing your model in a category they list is a bit difficult; you just have to do the best you can with it.
It also helps to have a free item or two, so potential customers can check out your work if they want.

Here it is in my store. The model was built to sell through Viewpoint, so was built to strict standards regarding N-Gons etc, which made it very complex to do as a project as I couldnt just model for tS. So it had to pass very strict quality control to get onto Viewpoint, it's first place of sale.
The plus side is I can sell it in a variety of formats as a result :)
So, my store:
http://www.tmgcgart.com/html/store.htm
Here it is on Turbosquid:
http://www.turbosquid.com/FullPreview/Index.cfm/ID/211697
They set the price there rather than me. Fair enough, guess what, it does sell at that price - hobbiests buy it from my store, pros and companies buy it from TurboSquid (they pay extra but get the benefit of a centralised database of models to search at will - the chances of them finding my store for the model they are looking for would be slim, compared to finding the model on TurboSquid).
It's still for sale at Viewpoint too, Digimation is their library. They charge even more! ;)
http://www.digimation.com/home/
oops digimation doesnt store the page you are on - look for asset number VP2890

That is a great mesh (Samuel Jackson head), I hope you do well with it.
Thanks for bringing up this topic, it's one I have pondered many times. There really is a lot of good advice here. Help offset the expensive costs of upgrades and technology.

Yeah definitely an intriguing idea. I never thought about someone paying $35 for a model of a banana!
I think your price is in line for the head, Madmouse.. I hope you don't run into copyright issues. |

I don't think you can copyright a face, even your own.
On the other hand, for someone to copy my face would just be wrong. |

I'm just saying because he is a trademark character you might run into issues. Not sure how that works exactly, ie if its only imaginary things that can be copyrighted\trademarked or could Boeing demand you take down a model of a 747, for example. I believe they call it intellectual property to make the distinction.
I used to play a superhero game called Freedom Force and a few people made Marvel and DC skins for the character models and they were forced to take them down from their sites (and they weren't even trying to make a profit).
My guess would be that you will hear from someone if its an issue, and depending on how hardass they want to be about it, there could be ramifications due to you profiting by their intellectual property..whereas offering it for free (which I'm not suggesting) would take money out of the equation (in which case they would probably ask you to just take it down without compensation) and\or calling it "generic Negroid guy" would put the onus on them to prove the resemblance. You mght even be able to point giant arrows at it with the keywords, but not actually call it Windu or Sam Jackson etc.
Or I could be a little alarmist here, mostly just trying to bring up the possibility.
There is only one Lucas, and he does not share power :D |

I'm not sure, but you can definitely copyright a name and character.

Perhaps using the actor's name rather than the character's would help skirt the issue... or like you say, title it with a 'generic' non-specific, politically correct label and just avoid the whole mess. Sort of defeats the purpose of modeling a recognizable face, but if it keeps the lawyers away from your door it's just as well. |

I don't know the exact details, not being a lawyer, but I'm pretty sure there are rules regarding the use of a real person's likeness as well. |

Hey, this is a great idea. I've never even thought about it before. Now, I'm not a top class guy in 3D. I mean, I can pull my objects together when I want them but I'm not in the same area as a lot of people here, the art work here floors me a lot of the time, but I can do some good stuff. I may look into this, particulary now that I have TrueSpace 7.5 on order. Thanks for the idea :). |

I put my Clank model up there in various formats. I wound up making $250 over like 2 years before Sony caught me and sent me a cease and desist. :D
I started him at $30.00, but Turbosquid raised the price to $37.50 and didn't give me any extra. I still only got $15.00 per sale. (At least, I'm pretty sure I did, but I no longer have any way to verify that, as he's been deleted from the site.) |
