Microsoft XNA:

Visual C#:

I admit I've been out of the programming loop for a while, but this sure looks pretty cool. There are even training videos on the site.

Autodesk is supporting a free FBX format converter and SDK here:

They also give away the other language... package... thingies [VB, VJ#, & VC++] that make up Visual Studio 2005. Or does VC# have some special connection/link to XNA that the others don't? [I have no idea]

XNA only works with C# for now. I think one of the reasons is that Microsoft is trying to create a push for C# which is actually a nice language. It's like C++ and Java put together but to me a little nicer. There was talk of a C++ version but most likely not anytime soon. I have some of the express editions and they only differ with I think plugins and template export and a few other things which can be looked at by the comparison chart they have on the site.

I like XNA. The fact that you can develop for PC or XBox 360 is neat. Develop a good enough game, then by joining the developers club ($99 a year) you can start investigating the chance of maybe getting your game published via XBox Live.

XNA itself has some good tutorials, and the C# language it uses is brilliant. I was always a fan of C++ anyway, so C# is the same but better. You can import to XNA using X format as well as FBX so that's a good two choices open there.

HTH!

Actually, you can use XNA with other .NET languages if you wish. You just happen to be (currently) required to install Visual C# Express to be able to install XNA. Once you've done this though, you can access the XNA assemblies from other .NET languages, like my personal favorite F#.
