I think it would be really neat if the tS forum had an "official" benchmark scene that we could all use to test render speed differences between different system configurations.

I was thinking that we'd probably need two scenes. One for lightworks and one for V-Ray.

Does anyone have any ideas or would like to contribute?

I actually have such a scene, I would have to get my computer in first. It was shipped from Germany when I left the ARMY. I'll let you know when it gets here.

feel free to put it up on the www.truespacelibrary.com if you want - It was suggested to create a benchmark file in another thread as well, but if you already have one it would be great to do some timings!

Sure, I just need to get my computer(soon I hope) and do some clean up to the scene, there are a few rather large textures....

The scene is basically an update to the old radiosity scene(with the offset cube/caligari logo) and a female char(the University of Caligari girl or UofC girl for short) it is completely different though. It does maintain the upscale office kinda theme.

...Anyway I'll keep you posted, and when my computer gets here I'll shoot you a private message here.

Got the call today, computer should be here by the beginning of may. I will await the 7.5 release and give it an overhaul(for workspace). I will put up 6.6 scene as well, I have found that you lose something in the translation from 7.11-6.6.

Good news! :D

As Shrike's test scene shows, we already know that multi core does lead to significant performace increase with tS rendering. I think it'll be interesting to start to see the differences between 7.5, 7.11 and winXP vs. Vista.

Looking forward to seeing what you got here Nowherebrain.

I actually got my shipment today!!! My computer is in my office, finally, and I will pull it out in a minute or two and see what I can tweak in player. I will remove the characters from the scene. They will make it far too slow...anyway will post an image in a day or two, and upload the scene once I play with it in 7.5's workspace.

here is a current rebuild(comletely, and rough) done late last night and this morning...what needs to change? /or/ What would people like to see implemented?

I'm not finished, I'm going to tweak it a bit more. It laks some finer details that I wish to add. I also want this to be for 6.6 AND Workspace(DX9) so... about two more weeks(awaiting 7.5).

Anyone here who knows about scripting?

It would be nice to just start the benchmark, it set's everything up and gives the rendertime in the end.

We had some problems with my scene and people using different settings because I didn't know how to handle that.

Really lovely benchmark take your time don't hurry the world is at your command

Very interested to see how dual/quad core performs I've already started a campaign for more CPU with her indoors, preparing the way. She can't read in here I hope :)

nowherebrain I wonder if the new build will allow CPU-like work on GPUs, Roman specifically mentioned something about using the GPU earlier so this benchmark will be very handy. It can be a very stressful test and might bog down even the highest-specced machines to 30 seconds to five minutes/frame or something. Any longer than that would mean calls to the fridge we might miss something :) (and any longer possibly wouldn't add much detail to the time-to-render info we'd discover in the resultant benchmark score)

I agree with Shike. It would be cool if the scene had a script brick with a "START" button on it and it popped up a dialog with the time when done. There's a lot of room for error in manually starting and stopping a time clock. (Hey now, no looking at me.... I'm uhm working on other scripting projects at the moment... yeah that's it... :p )

@weaveribm:

Shike's benchmark scene over in the hardware section shows pretty clearly that multi CPU does make a significant difference.

Also I think we should target at least 2 min on the render time to make room for improvements in CPU technology. Of course if things keep improving eventually we're going to have to use animation renders to really time performance... ;)

LOL, you noticed how I started to stare at you? ;)

Agreed! My simple scene took awhile for standard computers but when DualQuads entered the picture the rendertimes went down to a couple of seconds... hard to clock and compare.

Nowherebrain's scene looks alot more demanding and should be way better at torturing our computers :D

That is the plan...the 6.6 version will fake GI while, the 7.x version will not use a single light...well possibly one
*NOTE*
The tS7.x scene is really closer to the "Vray" scene.
The 6.6 scene is just for compatibility...
Both will work in 7.x(usefull also for workspace RT GI).

Q: should I implement my DOF method for these??? It is sorta animation based.(if you have not seen it...you should..especially those who don't plan on using Vray...I have to pat myself on the back..in the right hands it is really good DOF...very professional)
This would really be less about taxing a systems memory and more about CPU speed.(cranking up some caustics along side the DOF would do both for 7.x + Vray).

I think saving the scene out as a macro record file (*.rcd) will allow it to maintain uniform settings across machines.

Just remember what ever you add needs to work without any user side setup.

Huh, was that a reply to me??? How would that open in tS6.6? I'm not trying to leave someone out because they can't afford tS 7.x.....I am confused, I know you are a decent person and not implying this..so maybe I should just re-read this thread...

It wouldn't. Obviously the 6.6 version and 7.x versions are going to be different -- since 6.6 doesn't have scripting or V-Ray.

I'm suggesting that saving out the 7.x scene as an rcd, could solve the issue with uniform settings.

Also I'm not sure that benchmarking 6.6 is all that useful anymore...

Agreed, but some newer users may still want to see what they ARE capeable of...something to aim for or just play with...Hell maybe even tell their girlfriends that "See what I did." Fine by me..

But do go on about the .rcd, I am curious.

I'm not entirely sure how to do it. I know Professor Khaos has used that method to distribute his scripts. Maybe we can get him in on this?

My guess would be to:
1.) click the "open record toolbar" icon
2.) on the record toobar click the flyout icon "export record"

But I'm wondering if you have to record anything first LOL

-Jack.

Edit: Oh yeah and I never said I was a decent person.... mwahahahAHAHAHAHA!!! <inserts evil grin>

This is quite a game or ping pong(messaging)we got goin' on. I think in this case I'll just stick to good ol' .scn format.

Yup. Problem with the scn format is that I don't think it saves render settings, etc., for Player/Workspace side since it can only save what modeller understands: which is ts6.6

That's the problem we ran into with Shike's scene.
