Hi Roman,
I have been following your captains blog with great Interest - I had honestly put my copy of Truespace 7 on the shelf due to the lacking animation tools. I have been using Autodesk Motion builder 7.5 for my animations.
My main question is how easy is it to export the model from 7.5 with it's skeleton and skinning intact, into MotionBuilder 7.5?
Does it have a rag doll engine like what Character Studio has for Max?
Does it export and import to FBX and VOB(Vue Infinite object Format) ?
The above questions if answered will go along way to helping me decide whether to upgrade to 7.5.
Here is a link to an animation I have created using Motionbuilder and which I hope would be possible in Truespace 7.5
Character modeled in Maya, and imported into Motionbuilder for animation and then sent to Vue Infinite as a VOB - with all animation intact.

I have taken a leap of faith and preordered both 7.5 and Vray 1.5 - the bundle -
hoping and crossing my fingers that the above concerns will be addressed. |

another quick question after viewing the fcurve movie and the edit bvh
will the fcurve editor have handles for the points so we can manually adjust the curvature instead of using linear interpolation - that's a standard in almost all the other animation packages.
and the editing of the BVH - will the animation editor provide the ability to fix sliding feet - in Motion Builder you have the ability to fix the planted feet so no sliding of feet occurs when using imported mocap |

Hi Solomon,
At this point in time, exporting of skeletal data is not in development - the focus is on getting the tools working well in 7.5 itself. Converting that data into the form for other packages is something that naturally will be looked at, but currently is not being seen as part of the 7.5 release - the tools are completely rewritten and getting them working, stable and easy to use are our number one concerns at the moment, and all development effort is going into that.
Unsure what is meant by a rag doll engine (ie why this is separate from just the skeletons). The skeletons can all be affected by the real-time physics, such as gravity and collision with other objects, and the skeleton responds as you would expect (joints only moving within limits etc). Based on my understanding of the term "rag doll" and where I've seen it used, that's actually more than rag doll animation since limits and stiffness often don't come into play under those systems (and some very weird death poses can result, in games for instance!). I imagine that means that answer is at least "yes" in terms of doing what you need - it could be it even does more though :)
Again on the export front, exporting is not our major priority at this time. Again exporting and importing we know are important, however we still regard the stable and effective functioning of the tools in 7.5 itself as being top priority right now, with exports having to follow after that. This means that FBX and VOB are currently not supported formats for export in the tS7.5 release.
The animation you demo should be possible via various means. One would be to load a BVH motion capture for instance (BVH import is one new format added to those supported by tS for the release of tS7.5). You would also be able to just use the skeletal controls in 7.5 itself to make that movement from scratch - harder work than loading mocap of course, but possible.
Hope this is not disappointing after your leap of faith, but did want to get the information to you while you are in the period where you can choose to cancel the order as want you to be sure you know what it is you are purchasing and know whether it is indeed suited for your needs.
HTH!

Thanks Tom,
I appreciate the time you took to answer my questions.
yeah, the inability to export is a little disappointing - and not being able to work with Vue infinite.
I guess I will hold off and continue on with Motionbuilder.
Most of the scenes we work on here, end up in Vue infinite - for the environment generation - and key to that is the ability to import all the animation data.
Is there a quick way of cancelling the order? |

oh, by the way,
if you do add that feature for exporting the animation and rig as FBX, or VOB -do let me know and i will help with the Beta testing.

Just call up customer support if you need help with an order, and that would cover this case too!
Sorry you aren't sticking with us, but I understand that the export is a critical part of your workflow. Exports and ensuring trueSpace works well with other products is most definitely a high priority issue for us, a lot of research and discussion has happened (and is happening). We want people to get their work into tS more easily, and out of tS more easily.
So the message is that we are definitely looking at building as many bridges as we can to fit in with workflows and pipleines, and to work with products that people use.
Of course it was important in your situation to know that this was not going to be part of the 7.5 release - but do keep your eye on trueSpace. I think you will be very pleased with the tools it has and what it can do for one thing, and you'll also be able to see the connections we build to and from other packages etc - and again I think you will be pleased!
I hope we'll convince you to jump back on board as things unfold :)
Thanks!

Hi Tom,
is there a Direct number I can call to cancel the order?
I tried the one on the store page but I couldn't seem to connect.

I did like that animation at the bottom, very impressive, is that key-framed animation? |

hi Roman,
thanks for the response.
yes I do own Truespace 7.1 and I have been with Truespace since Version 5. I do believe there are some images of mine in the image gallery. http://www.caligari.com/gallery/imagesgallery/2000/Oct00/image10.html
That animation is a mixture of keyframe and mocap animation.
I will be more than glad to Beta test those features if and when you start working on them.
Here is another animation my team mates have just finished working on. The the bulk of the enviroment scenes were created and rendered in Vue 6 xStream, the characters were modeled and rigged in Maya and then taken to Motionbuilder where they were characterized. Using the FBX export format, they ended up in Max and then taken to Vue as VOBs - and that's why I am interested in those 2 file formats - FBX and VOB
The lip sync, which still needs some work, was done in Motionbuilder
here is the link to the animation:

Solomon, that is a good work there (I even remember that small space ship:), we will contact you when we start testing for 7.6, please ask Norm about NDA. Meanwhile you could still benefit from 7.5 perhaps, particularly from integration of IK/key frames with physics and procedures which is very simple. I saw a lot of authoring packages used in your demo, no matter how good format conversion may be it is always the weakest link in the production. "If" trueSpace7.5 is good enough to accomplish some of the steps which previously required file conversion inside its well rounded (albeit proprietary) environment in a good enough quality it could save time and money on projects of this size. |

thanks Roman,
who is Norm?
by the way, does 7.5 have a particle engine similar to Lightwave's Hyervoxels? like Dust, explosions, smoke(missile trails)? what about camera shakes and 2.5D motionblur?
i am also curious about Network rendering.
check out this video about Character Interaction in Motionbuilder - http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=6837722
will that feature or something similar be available in 7.5?
Sincerely

To answer some of your questions:
No, no good particle system like LW's Hypervoxels or 3DSMAX's Thinking Particles & Matterwaves in tS7 as of yet. Maybe some emails to cebas could get them to reconsider tS as a viable commercial platform for Thinking Particles, Matterwaves and PyroCluster?

Matterwaves Link:

Network rendering is already possible using the tSNet plugin; I'm not sure how well it integrates w/ tS7.5 however due to Workspace's lack of support for pre-tS7 plugins, though I suppose you could render from Model view?

No, no 2.5D motion blur in tS7 at this point in time. I typically end up doing 2.5D blur in AfterEffects using RevisionFX's motion blur plug-in, which allows masks for the blur effect, which can also be create in trueSpace for more realistic 2.5D blur.

32 bit as far as I know.
Supposable future plans are for 64 bit. When exactly, is a guess. |

Roman has indicated that the plans are for 8.0 to be available in 64-bit. So we know which version will be 64-bit, as to when it will be released, that is the mystery. ;) |

I for one welcome the availability of Truespace 7.6 - had been saving up some money to upgrade from 7.1
I am still looking for the compartibility with motionbuilder and Vue Infinite.
FBX import and export would be a great addition an already good product.
The day I am able to create the following animation I did with Max, Maya, Motionbuilder and Vue Infinite,
the day I will switch to using Truespace as a primary 3D application. There is alot I like about the program, and it seems like its right there, at the tipping edge.

Hi Solomon, I have had some success with Truespace 7.5 Vue and Motion Builder. This was awhile back. I grabbed the DEXTER character that comes with Truespace 7.5 7.6 and took out its skeleton (that skeleton is setup to allow dropping in many bvh anim clips). I brought it in to motion builder and then retargeted/characterized it. Then would animate it easily in Motion Builder. When done I would export as a bvh and import that in to Truespace 7.5. Once in Truespace I would load it in then grab its ANIM CLIP and drop that ANIM CLIP on a character (that I had the dexter skeleton on). Anyway I will have to start playing with that again.
As for Vue. Since it exports landscapes in COB thats as far as I got. Looking in to other options that might be coming up.
I will upate you more when I can :)
Click Here .. a little test I did with physics, particles, bvh animation with Truespace 7.6 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3dere396sI)
