I doubt that Robert is a synonym for Raphael :D
Raphael works with 3dsmax but prefers matte painting so why he should "play" with trueSpace *g*.

... I would suggest to introduce a jury who support the monthly picture selection so we avoid those problems (and it can become a problem with the copyright owner).

Well why not? I think parva is a synonym for "The Lawnmover Man" :D

His eyes are everywhere in the www :D

Vizu, I think if they are not the same person Caligari has to remove his renderings immediately. That is a very serious offense. It's an insult to the original artist and no different then stealing. In school he would be in VERY big trouble! At a job he would be fired.

First congratulations on your Gallery Win! You've been holding back in the Forum because that one is off the charts! Your best work so far and the Win is well deserved. Just an awesome piece!

Hi all,

From what I can see, it looks like Robert Plante is indeed stealing other people's artwork. Pending further investigations, his work will be removed from the galleries later today.

It is sad when someone sets out to abuse a system in this way.

Thanks!

Tom

this is interesting - so who ripped from who??

I think it's a valid question as to who these 2 people are - it's so blantant if they are different - one of them has guts to just outright claim to have done the one piece - hmmm, maybe they collaborated.

I hope he learns a lesson from this because now viewers will never trust his work.

I had an employee who worked for me, a great kid. His father was a State Trooper, his Grandfather was a State Trooper, his Great Gradfather was a State Trooper. He was getting ready for Police Academy and working for me to earn money.

I caught him stealing. The Company I worked for pressed charges and the theft is on his permanent record. He is FOREVER banned from being a State Trooper! A sad story that still bugs me today.

Robert Plante looked like he was very talented, but who knows now.

Maybe others reading this will also realize how serious this is in the real world. If Robert became a Professional and was caught he would be sued.

Hi all,

Oh it is more than just Raphael, there are multiple artists that Robert Plante has stolen from. So far I have been able to find about 4 of his images elsewhere - the crashing planets (no artist attributed though), the spaceship runner up from January, the Raphael image, and the ship sailing off the edge of the world.

Given that, I would be pretty certain that all Robert Plante's other images are stolen too.

HTH,

Tom

That is sad...however, all that stuff can be done in TS (with some mattepainting in PS for post-texturing, tone work and atmospherics). It think that work is indeed VERY inspiring and should at least serve as a benchmark for what TS can do. There is nothing in those images that can't be done in TS...Just takes a little work, that's all;)

Sorry about my quesiton..but is Truespace or is Photoshop work?

its about porcentage, if you create 100 polygons..and use photoshop to create objects, create light effects, create grass. create the background.. create the moon, create the glow, create the atmosphere partices.. retouch the shadows..

Yes you use Truespace.. but that kind of pictures can be sended to a photoshop contest..

just my opinion... i prefer a BIG WELL DONE MODEL showing the capabilities of the modeler than the photoshop capabilitys...

But is my opinion

WHEN I SAY YOU! im not talking ABOUT YOU DALI, just ANYBODY... :) understand im not native speeker.

here is the tutorial from Robert how he created his Runner up :D

As a few of you have noticed I'm the second place winner for January

For those of you who would like to know how I went about making this picture keep reading.

Well first off I used my white board and did some concepts.
This idea originally came from one of my friends and I thought it would look great so I decided to make it.

Next I started to convert it to 3D first I started with the planets in the background.
Originally there was only one, but I decided to have two colliding to make it more interesting.
The explosion is really just a textured sphere it still looks nice though.
To get the planets to look the way they do I took clay and threw it together several times, and that's how I got that idea.
Granted the clay didn't break apart like that, but that is where I got the general feel.
I realize that when two planets actually collide they don't fall apart like that, but hey this is my own little world so why not.
The lighting was particularly tricky, using volumetric effects.
The explosions themselves do not actually emit the light, that would just take too long to render.
Instead there are several lights inside there that I applied advanced volumetrics to.
I also placed some just off to the left of the scene to indicate a sun.
Reasoning behind putting advanced volumetrics is that there is cosmic dust, mainly it just looks cool.
For the shredded pieces of ships I looked at various items found in junk yards such as car skeletons and the like.
The ships took a good part of a month to model.
First I made rough sketches of what I wanted the ships too look like, and then I ran the ideas by some friends.
If you look close enough you can see clearly on the back of the ship especially that I just textured and bumped it and that the resolution isn't so great.
I did that because it would cut down render time and I didn't think it would be that noticeable.
The glowing orange rod on the back of the ship isn't actually lighted as can be seen by it not lighting up the insides of the fins.
The engines are just bright lights with basic volumetric effects.
Ship design came from books I read, movies I watched, and of course games I played.
In the bottom left hand corner it says "Angels Fall First, War In Heaven"
It doesn't really mean anything but it sounds cool.
Heaven is space because space is referred to as "the Heavens"
Angels are an elite group of fighter pilots who take the fight to space.
Although the whole thing can be viewed in a biblical sense in which case I would be saying that evil shall prevail.
To make the bitmaps I tried a variety of programs from simple paint to Photoshop and Fireworks.
Most of it had to be drawn by myself due to the fact that I couldn't find such textures anywhere.

Hope that's detail enough for just about anyone.

As frank mentioned earlier I am just 15 years of age.

Well that's all I can think of right now, if you have questions for me whether it be about my personal background or art just ask and I'll answer honestly.

The way the bulk of it is done is creating 3d models for the scene and rendering. Sometimes, in the website I've seen, a background is used and the rest is matte painting and/or "plates." Of course, we don't really know where the models came from (3ds, TS, Maya...etc)...what I do know from analyzing the pics is that some 3d models were rendered and some work in PS was used for things like post-texturing (applying an semi-transparent "overlay" texture over the rendered models) some genuine mattepainting (chains, damage, landscape features...etc) and adjusting tones with the addition of haze and lightrays.

Later on, I'll post a similar process I've done with a recent artpiece I just finished...I don't think I've deleted everything yet:|just give me a few minutes

just to wade into this discussion, the difference between photoshop work and 3d work can be really fine. I mean, if you use a pre-rendered background in an image does that make it less 3d? personally i tend to use photographic textures made or at least edited in photoshop, the way i leaned to use a 3d package stated 'better a passable model with great texturing and lighting than an amazing model with a bad texture and awful lighting'.

I suppose if truespace is used to create the final image, maybe with just a little post processing like colour correction or something then i'd class it as 3d, even if it's mainly simple models with photoshop textures. Have a look at this:

http://www.marlinstudios.com/products/st5/downtownstreet.htm

i saw this when i was just starting out in 3d with a copy of truespace 3se i got free on a magazine and i think it's fair to say it help shape the way i deal with 3d images, even though this style of image making is starting to look dated as computer games get more and more detailed.

Maybe there should be a few categories insted: one for pure modeling the other for overall image

I just looked and saw that the act has been done, but I do believe there are several more images from him, still existing in the galleries. I think that these should be removed and discredited as well. These are in the galleries for December 06, January 07, and February 07. The one in January was credited as a runner up. It's none of my business as to what Caligari does from here, but I would like to point out that Robert Plante recieved a prize for that work.

I would assume Caligari would demand proof that the work was done by him.

EDIT: I didn't realize this had already been discussed. Sorry.
