Trust was violated. There is obviously a flaw in the system. Anything that happens next is Caligari's move, but what do you think should happen after Robert Plante's offense?

Honestly, I think it is Caligari's call. Remember that this is a 16 year old kid. Some people take a bit longer to mature than other people do.

judged from a jury would be my recommendation.

Another way is to upload the original and a wireframe of the scene (simple screenshot which shows scene in program).
Of course some artists posts there wires of scene at 3d art sites too, but not many, and you mostly see in which program the wireframe was taken (if you don't do heavy photoshop work :D).

btw. personally I have nothing against copying the work from another artist (as long as it is for learning purposes).
I myself have copied some 2 or 3 works in the past (for example the room from JJ Palomo done in Virtualight - got even congrats for that from him)
but just to copy the original and call it with the own name is stealing.

One kid making a mistake doesn't necessarily mean forming a jury. The focus now should be between Caligari and Plante privately as it is.

As far as the method of judging the Contest from now on? It's their show not ours but lets keep it light and fun.

I think it is a fact of life, young men's brains do not fully develop till after the age of 25. It is a shame he choose the way he did to display the works... I have often copied other peoples topology either by using pictures of their wires or dissecting a model, it is all part of the growing as an artist experience.

To me the whole mess is water under the bridge, hopefully our young friend can make amends, learn from the experience, than move on (in the metaphorical sense, not physical :) )

With all due respect, how do we truly know his age? To rely on information volunteered by a source that has shown a probable creditability gap is to run the risk of being fooled a second time. I don't know if anyone has met him face to face, only that someone exchanged a few emails with him. Having run across a con artist before I'd make no assumptions about this person.

This is indeed a private matter between Caligari and the person currently known to us as Robert Plante.

I think if it comes right down to it, if we have to include a wireframe or OpenGL or whatever view with our work, the best thing to do would be to grab a screenshot of everything within the TS workspace.

I.E. pics of kitty on spaceship thingy that I just finished (you have to scroll down some)

However, I think I can safely assume that at least 90% of the content within the past few years has been genuine. I'm not sure Caligari will adopt such drastic measures over an isolated incident.

First.. i doubt he is 16... 2) I think he made that from many times.. Dont know if him are "ignorant" and never learn when his parents sais "don't steal"...

3) I can accept this IF Rober Plante or dont know his real name.. say at public he commit a big misstake, present apologies to caligari AND he send again the caligari products back or dont know what he win..

Then, i can say poor guy, he needs grow a little..

And yes.. the first image, i dont have any doubt is from him.. That yes im 100% Sure are using Truespace... (Submarine picture) (http://www.caligari.com/Gallery/ImagesGallery/2006/Jun/image.asp?Cate=GImages&img=2463&email=rdplante@hotmail.com&name=Robert%20Plante)

Just my opinion...

This is not a private matter, anyone had their work riped off before?????

Send email to the real artist and see what he(she) thinks? this is not a isolated incident. just one that came to light here.

Caligari has done nothing wrong as well. Not many 3d software company's care about their users like Caligari does. Just look at this site and tell me where a company runs a user forum where they allow their users to learn and have fun together????? I'll bet no user here is more sad than Roman is. Stuff like this hits home very hard.

Getting ripped off sucks.
I know.
Nobody wins when that game gets played.

John, your points on privacy are well taken. I remember having my own artwork (as simple as it was) ripped off from the flight sim forums. It does indeed suck. Contacting the original authors to let them know about the incident is entirely appropriate.

I was thinking in terms of the legality of us taking unsanctioned action on Caligari's behalf in order to directly confront the individual. Doing so might hurt the chance of successful prosecution by Caligari should that option be exercised.

Also, we forum members may not have all the information on the problem. We only know of Robert via his internet persona. A search against his email address gave another forum where location information was different but his description of self was nearly the same. It could be the individual signed up for one account then moved to a new location and signed up for the other. Could also be identity theft or a telltale sign of a deceptive personality. Distance between locations was unusual for a casual move but not impossible.

We don't know. Given that Caligari was in the position to distribute prizes, they likely have better information than we do.

By the way, I don't know that the signature quote "It seems I'm the only one who understands me" is tied to the current incident. According to the membership list his last visit to the board was on 02/15/2007. That predates the exposure of the scandal.

He probably got caught up in the "I gotta win at all cost" Think how big stealing is in the MP3 world. To someone his age it's common practice anymore. They just don't realize the consequences. Maybe this was good lesson for the others thinking about it.

I remember someone was entering the animation gallery with animations used with a completely different program, and they got honourable mentions. Funny isn't it :)

See, this stuff does happen, but it's a little more serious that he managed to WIN with someone elses images. This is a real shame :( Can't really take a prize back, can you :(

Lame... :(
