I'm enjoying the results Vray can give with glass.. my first bottle's material still needs some tweaking , but it's starting to look ok..

cool. I like the effect the bump (a leaf I guess?) gives to the front of the bottle. Will you fill the bottle with something or put a cork plug on it? |

It looks nice with the exception of the neck and opening, it should be sort of rounded at the top where the glassblower finished |

Parva, I was thinking about putting some liquid in side..half full..then a cork is a must..actually there is one in the real bottle..:)
yes Brian, the top is still missing it's fillet.:D .but the bottle was cast, so it has mold lines which I haven't put on..might thought..as for the neck I think inside needs a re-work..
Thanks..Gord |

Looks great Gord. Heres an idea.. what about a rolled up message in the bottle and the bottle floating in the sea maybe with a nice sunset behind.:) |

You've become a glass expert ! :)
Great to see VRay in action and the quality it can produce !
( I really need to start a VRay project soon to test caustics myself  )

Are you thinking about the "Private Island" thread ? ;) |

Thanks MadMouse, Shike..:)
a Vray watery surface..haven't tried that yet..
here is a few new renders..
they have vastly different render times.. it seems the angle of the object[s] and view has alot to do with it.. #2 was the fastest render [2 hrs]..even faster than the single bottle,

Cool work. Do you collect old bottles? Rare ones can be quite valuable. I used to install phones for a living and often found old bottles under the floors of houses that needed re-wiring. In fact the small bottle on the right looks very much like one I used to have.
On a different tangent, I've been really enjoying your work with glass materials - the old insulators, these bottles, it looks great - keep up the good work. |

Thanks Wizard.:) .I don't avidly collect them, but I do have a few. are any worth anything?..don't know..they were found in old houses, barns, or even in the ground, under back porch steps which seemed to have been a favorite litter collection spot ..:D

Nice. :) Bearing in mind I haven't seen the original bottles, some of the transitions between different widths [in the neck/top area] look a bit too sharp - perhaps need a bit of rounding over? |

thanks Alien..if you are talking about the middle bottle..the fillet tool won't work on those areas..[didn't want to do it by hand] after all the booleans used to make the inside shape, it's got sorta ...messed up, well at least it still booleaned with the outside..:D |

It was the outside I was talking about, specifically the top & bottom of the wider, top-most section of the neck. I do have an idea how you might be able to do it without perhaps quite as much work as you imagine.
If you used the free edge2path tool to create a path that matched going up the outside of the neck & down the inside, then converted that path to a curve, you could smooth out the sharp edges, lathe it, chop off the old neck & add on the new 1.
Would that be easier than however you meant when you mentioned doing it manually? |

TBH, from that pic, I can't tell if we're talking about the same edges. :o These are the 1s I'm on about:

To me they look like sharp 90http://homepage.ntlworld.com/alien42/images_for_caligari_forum/degrees.png angles. |

I never got that deeply involved with bottle collecting but I did work with some guys who were heavily into collecting and trading them. These guys were pretty fanatical about it.
It may be worth your while to google for some bottle collecting sites - they must be out there - and have a look see - IIRC some rare old bottles were extremely sought after and therefore worth a significant amount. You've got nothing to lose by checking it out. :D |
