Yesterday was Friday the 13th, should have known something would go wrong, or in my case, strange! Had the new photos taken and got to work on GenHead but I don't know why, but as I worked on my new head, the proview image kept distorting. The left side of my head kept caving in!!! EEK!! So have taken new photos and will work on it again tonight. Better work too as tomorrow is my last day before the demo times out!

Well, todays the last day of my GenHead demo and finally, I got a somewhat decent version of my head out of the software.

http://www.iol.ie/~pkb/Paul.jpg

While it's not a 100% bang on, snap shot of myself (I think Splinters model turned out better then mine), it turned out well, better then I was expecting anyway. It's a nice thing to have though I have no idea what I am going to do with it, if anything.

In total, I went though 19 exports of the head for examination before reaching the version here which I'm fairly happy with. The ears posed a bit of a challenge for me but after a bit of tweeking, I got them into a somewhat ok fashion. I also had a bit of trouble with the nose, with a dent in the centre of it which I couldn't figure out where it was coming from, but after numerous pulling and altering of the guides in GenHead, I got it sorted.

I will admit, I'm not overly fond of the hair. LOL! Yes, I accept that working from two photos, and with hair having no set shape like the rest of everyones facial features, that generating your proper hair style is beyond this program, and don't get me wrong, I am happy with the overall model, including the hair (to some extent). I guess if you want to capture your hair, you need the real thing, a real person scanner to stick you head in and have it scan your hair for you. While the textured hair on my head is ok, my poor goatee is washed out and I have to admit, with it gone, I look younger (though I have no plans to shave off the real thing ;)).

While I can live with my goatee missing, I will admit that the textured-flat-onto-your-head hair above does stick out like a sore thumb for me so...

...I covered it up.

I have to say, once I rendered the scene with the cap on, I loved it :)!! It takes that Escaped Lunatic look off my head (LOL!!) and gives a more police officer look ;). When I get TrueSpace 7.5 and get the hang of working with it, in particular the hair tools, I'll try to restore my hair and goatee to this model.

So, that's it. Thanks, Splinters. If not for you showing your work with the GenHead demo, it would have passed me by and I have to agree with you, it's a fun thing to have. While I won't be investing in the full version of GenHead, simply because I have no use for the software, I have no problem recommeding it to anyone looking for head creation software. It's fairly easy to use, even given that it has a few quirks! And the end results are pretty good. If you bought issue 90 of 3D World, the demo will expire permanently on the 1st of May so if you want a 3D model of your head, load it up fast.

Good work Paul and it could be so much better with some subtle lighting. tS6.6 can do it fine until you get 7.5...:)

For anyone contemplating a purchase of some head generating software I tried the same process with Facegen. While it does well to morph your photos into an existing head, it only textures the face itself and leaves the head looking a bit bland.

So, here I am as a rather timid looking buddhist monk...

Stick with Genhead...

Did a double take with those last two pics. Looks so uncannily like a Canadian magician called Jay Sankey that it's scary!

Of course Facegen lets you morph your head with simple sliders...this is the scary slider...

More worryingly, a simple slider changes your age from late 30's (my actual age) down to 20's :) and back up to 60's.

This genuinely upset me...:(

Interesting features in FaceGen but for looks, I think GenHead comes off better. The FaceGen heads look plastic-y.

I agree. More flexibility in facegen for getting expressions but whatever you do you still look like the bald headed girl from Star Trek the Motion Picture.

Genhead has it on details..

They contacted me today to ask for details of how I made my head as they are having an online gallery section...:)

Who did, GenHead? Are they going to post your head in their gallery? More importantly, are they giving you a free copy of GenHead as payment! LOL!! Congratulations, Splinters. Everyone will know who you are now.

"Hey, you see that guy over there... His head looks very familiar...!"

LOL!!!

Ok, I made it to the Genhead gallery.....yeah, me and one other (rather dodgy) image....oh well, a bit of advertsing for them...

Still in genhead related news......

This month's 3D world mag has a full working seven day trial of Gencrowd. Seven days from when you install it as long as you use it before August 1st....:D

Now you can create an endless supply of heads of different ages, expressions, races etc. and fill your hard drive in a week...all for £6 (and there are BVH files, textures, a tank, a set of nice car models and more...even if you don't read the rather quality magazine...:)

We get that mag here across the ditch in NZ - it's shipped here by ...er.. ship :D , so we're usually about 6 to 8 weeks behind the UK in getting it but any specialised magazine shop will be able to get a copy for you - expect it to be fairly pricey too. Of course offers limited to a specific date may not work out but the mag is usually worth the time and money anyway - it's one of the best available IMHO.

The problem with the second head in the GenHead gallery is that it's not mounted on a body. Splinters and I both added a body to our heads. Splinters also added glasses, I added a hat. The head in the second image is just floating on the set of the Enterprise bridge which puts it off and makes it look wrong.
