I've been on the internet since it first hit the shores of the UK for public use and just wanted to share my thoughts on this community.
Firstly I am loving TS and trying to learn as much as possible as I'm quite new to 3D. TS lets the new user feel free to experiment without being intimidated by the software. Looking at the examples of work on here, the software seems to be able to do most things that would cost £1000's with other packages.
The community spirit is amazing here, with everybody seeming so willing to help each other with their projects. Just the friendly atmosphere in the forums could well persuade people to buy TS as it's vital to feel you have the support with any questions you might have. The amount of interaction from Caligari themselves is wonderful and I can't imagine many software packages where the CEO gets involved on a daily basis. It seems as though the company really listens to its users as well!
I look forward to TS and the community becoming greater with the new release, and hopefully many new users to expand the user base.
From a new user, thanks to everyone. |

Welcome aboard! :)
Over time I think you'll notice we have our ups and downs too but I'd agree with your sentiments. One of my favorite web hangouts and lots of helpful folks...

You are so right, I am truly amazed and glad that this forum exists, although im not as active as I would like to be, I check the posts every single day, its part of my routine heh. Everyone is so helpful and the fact that the software developers are active is truly amazing, I have never seen such care for a companies customers, it is these forums that compelled me to purchase truespace, not having much money, It is very rare that I can actually afford to purchase software but in this case it was well worth it |

I usually don't agree 100% with anything, just as a matter of principle (I'm practicing to become a grumpy old man!!) however in this case I am in total agreement with RyanT, Prof K and Matski. I visit here most days, it's sort of my 'local' where I come to unwind and chat about things that I care about - like trueSpace and this community! |

I always love posting some half-done artwork, getting immensely positive feedback and critiques, and then getting myself stuck on how to fix it. XD
You guys are all great, and the help you have given me over the years has not only shaped my abilities as an artist, but as a person as well! Thanks alot, and welcome to the friendliest site on Earth, RyanT! |

Here's some helpful advice for this particular problem - get another computer! My newest fastest machine has trueSpace on it and is used almost solely for 3d and graphics work. My older (2001) machine has all my music on it and is the one I use for net surfing. The normal situation for me is modelling/rendering on one PC and monitoring the forums on my other machine. As they sit right next to each other and are networked together this provides the ideal solution.
If you don't have a second machine dedicated for net use now is an excellent time to buy a modest net-capable PC as suppliers are offering brilliant deals on old stock which has Windows XP as the OS.
I had no idea just how useful this setup is until I networked my new machine to the older ones. |

Thanks wizard, that's what I'll be doing soon. I'm getting a new PC for graphics/gaming and use the one now for general use (it's struggling with 1GB RAM and a not so good graphics card). |

Actually, I find dual headed monitors a great leap in this area. Not only does it give you a second screen to have web pages open but you can also borrow the space from time to time to open up the additional windows in tS7.11 without crowding your 3D view. It's generally cheaper than a 2nd computer too (depending on the monitor you buy and if you have to upgrade the video card).
Two computers is nice though when you start rendering a complex scene or animation as your processor will definitely be pretty well loaded. |

I totally agree - I was hesitating in purchasing tS, but after reading these forums for a couple of weeks I was convinced - that and drooling over some of the V-Ray renders :)
Here's some helpful advice for this particular problem - get another computer!
I have an old work laptop with XP which I sometimes use to browse the forums / net but mostly use to display the PDF manual (or a fourm tutorial ;) )whilst trying to learn tS. It's also handy if you want to take the laptop to read the manual away from the PC... |

My "get another pc" suggestion might seem a bit frivolous but it's possible these days to pick up second hand reconditioned and/or ex-lease machines that are rubbish at processor intensive stuff like 3d graphics or video editing but perfectly good for net surfing.
Recently I've been focussed on learning a bit about tS 7.11 so I've been using that on the right-hand dual 17 inch monitor machine, whilst having the PDF manual on my old pc and the forums open on the left-most server pc.
My old pc was originally designed for sound and music - it has a top of the range sound card and is still going strong despite being around 6 years old.
The server and router and cables and extra 15 inch monitors together cost around US$40.
Not shown in this pic is my partners computer which was immediately behind me when I took this photo.
This set-up is not all that pretty - no shiny flat-screens and stuff but it works really well for me. Obviously it would be nice to have lovely shiny new machines to do everything but it's really not necessary.
Hope this helps someone...... |

Blimey! That's a lot of screen! (Hope you've got a radiation suit :p ) Which one do you use to guide the Shuttle on re-entry? :D
If anyone is looking for an old PC for free (or has one they want to give away) I would suggest checking out Freecycle (www.freecycle.org). Although it's not specifically for IT, the local group I subscribe to here in the UK often has old PCs, monitors, and PC bits being given away... and it's good for the environment too :)

W!zard your bringing back the "Show Us Your Room" thread! (Still one of my favorite threads.)
http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=840&page=2&highlight=show+room
Any new people could certainly add their room to it. (that thread not this one please)
It was very interesting seeing everyone's work environment.
One room not shown was Romans Room or Caligari on the inside, would be interesting.
Edit: Madmouse do you use a drawing tablet when you model? |

Madmouse do you use a drawing tablet when you model? Yes indeedy. I've got an old wacom oversized A4 that I scrounged from work. I use it for just about everything except surfing and modelling in Silo (needs 3 buttons really).
Just for the record its a big thumbs up from me on everything thats been said about the community here. |

LOL - no radiation suit but I do have a year round tan! Handy for drying my hair too - I just turn the brightness up full! I liked you ecological tip too - maybe Prodigy's not the only closet hippie here:D

Thanks Marcel. Actually as I am a wizard I'm well trained in levitation - unfortunately I've had to stop doing it as it made me too light headed ;) ;)
@Steinie - yeah that's a great thread - I should tidy my room first and then post another picture there :)
@Dele - yes I was working on a music project - that got put on the backburner when ts7 was released and is still a work in progress!! I've got some earlier stuff I did but as I don't have a website I haven't got a place to post any of it. |
