Alack, for my old HP 17" hath served me well over the years. I must needs brush it aside, for 'tis time to broaden, widen, lengthen, and biggen my horizons!

In lieu of further verbosity, I'm basically saying the time has come for a new monitor. I just got my first paycheck at my first ever full-time job! And I think that in celebration, I'm-a get a really cool widescreen monitor. The one I've "decided" on after looking all over the internet's most popular compy shops, is the BenQ FP222WH 22" with HDMI input. :D

I just wanted to ask for the oppinions of people who actually know things about computers! Is it a good monitor? Is there a better monitor? Is that a good price? Etc.

Thanks in advance!

That looks like a very good buy to me. Has also good user ratings. I normally buy most of my computer stuff from Newegg, far as I am concern they are the best for that. Have you thought of going up to 24", price jumps up alot though.

We have the V7 and Chimae versions of this and they are great on a budget.. Not sure about the Benq but most 22" widescreens at that price use LCD panels that are made by Chimae, the difference is the surround and the backlight. They are actualy 6bit screens with dithering, not 8 bit (which are about half as much again). It would be worth checking the dead pixel policy..

Whatever you get you'll love it compared to the 17"

I agree with Xmanflash.

Also for the people who's budget doesn't quite make it up to that point, the Acer's are pretty nice -- but they are over bright and a bit of a pain to calibrate. So if you don't know how to calibrate a monitor better to go with the Chimei or ViewSonic which is also on sale.

Just make sure you get something 1600x1050. ;)

I replaced a 19" MAG CRT with one at the recommendation of someone who had two other SyncMasters in dual monitor setup. 2ms response with a 3000:1 contrast ratio - for $20.00 more. They were retailing for that at BestBuy when I bought mine.

Highly recommend it. Check the return criteria on whatever you purchase.

Or...get a nice pair of 19" monitors. Nothing like dual screen and I have only recently converted. When I tried to run on one screen it was like working with one eye shut. Given the price of 19" monitos nowadays, it shouldn't be too much.

Just check out what a screen grab looks like (bottom)

Thanks for the responses, everyone!

The return policy on this one seems to be that it's non-refundable, and I can only replace it if there are eight or more dead pixels (Which sounds stupid to me, I would expect a company to replace it if there was even one dead pixel.) Also, what on Earth is a dead pixel?

That's quite a setup you've got there, Splinters! Do you guys know if it would be possible to combine the widescreen monitor and my ol' 17" into a dual monitor setup?

A dead pixel is actually a pixel that is stuck on one colour...usually primary such as red or blue.

As for dual monitor...it is all up to your graphics card. If you have dual outputs you can connect any size you want. I looked long and hard for a similar Sony monitor as I wanted my screens at the exact same level. Can you believe I got it on Ebay for £80 delivered...:)

I beg to differ :). AFAIK a dead pixel is one that does not light up (ie displays only black), whereas a stuck pixel is one that is stuck on a particular colour (what you have explained above).

I have a Gateway VX1120 set at 1600x1200 and a 17" set at 1280x1024 that came with my new toy and they work together just fine. Even though the screen sizes don't match like spliters, the advantages of having two screens are great. Mainly no overlapping apps, or with TS, one screen with the image the other for the tools.
