Hi all,
The Renderosity 3D Gallery will be going live in about 10 minutes, with artist Matthieu Roussel (2006 Artist of the Year from Renderosity) there for the opening of a gallery with his works.
Hope to see at least some of you there!
The link to use is here:
caligari.trueplay://tpportal.caligari.com/1190
(copy and paste into IE or other browser to fire up truePlay and join in)
Thanks!

I cut and paste that and ie throws up an error. Can't see a link from within the entrance to truePlace either. Any suggestions? |

Kate needed to reinstall - something (currently unknown, possibly a registry clean) had removed the registry links tying truePlay to the links. The error is that truePlay won't run.
Another error is to click the link and then click "Visit truePlace" when the software opens - do please wait a moment and let the software load up the scene automatically (you will get an error saying "wrong network version" if you try and connect using "Visit truePlace" in the software itself).
The event is just ending, Matthieu has been great, sharing a lot of background about how he works on those images! The gallery remains open now of course, and I'll be checking in to see who all is visiting, but nothing beats getting to meet and talk with an artist directly! Thanks to all who came along :)
HTH!

A registry clean is part of my regular maintenance. A reinstall sorted it out. Many thanks to Tom for the prompt advice.
Give it a go Wiz and I'll see you in a mo! |

Yes, it was great fun to see his work. He's very good! :) It was a pretty good turn out too. I'm pleased to see an event that is with the broader 3d community instead of just us trueSpacers. These kinds of events will surely be beneficial to the community and Caligari. :) |

No one got a screen capture of the event? Did he talk about his work "Pursuit"?
Any insights....
I couldn't go there because of Work. Darn.:( |

Well that was pretty interesting! Entering the address directly into IE gave a 404 but going to R'osity homepage then to their gallery opening page and clicking that link (which was the same as what I had entered directly) worked as advertised. Of course I may just have entered it wrong the first time (that's been known to happen! ;) ).
Sadly I was a little late trying to get there and my dial up connection meant the download was painfully slow (compared to D/Ling truePlace spaces from Caligari) but I eventually got to the gallery - about 5 minutes after the last person had left:( .
Mathieu certainly has an eye for an amusing and intriguing image - I can see why he was selected as the winner.
A couple of interesting points - the r'osity gallery was very slow to download even for dailup and when it was all done the navigation around the gallery was very jerky - not all nice and smooth like the Caligari shared spaces. Seems odd that I can get around the Caligari trueplaces just fine but the r'osity one was very jerky.
Even though the party was over I got enough of a taste of the event to see what a cool thing it could be.
Also very interesting to read some of the comments left by the wider R'osity community - seems like a lot of Mac users were feeling left out but otherwise the feedback I saw was really positive.
For what it's worth, my thanks to all involved - it's totally brilliant that the wider 3d community can be involved with truePlace in this way - nice work Caligari! |

I'm not surprised Splinters - my first thought was that his style was quite similar to yours - I'm particularly thinking about the London bus picture. |

I took some pictures while there, here's a quick posting of one. Matthieu is in orange, Roman in black, Bibiana in pink.
The gallery stays there of course, and Matthieu said he will be visiting it now and then to see who is in there! So you can still have a chance of bumping into the artist while visiting, how cool is that :)
He was a great guy, it was super to hear how he made his images, what tools he used, about his books, and so on. And of course his artwork is brilliant too!
I'll be checking in there now and then too, see who I can bump into :)

Thanks for the info Tom! Looks like it was fun.
W!zard remember the DOF discussion we all had in the other thread? Check out Matthieu's use of DOF in "Pursuit". I was hoping he had it there. I'm going tonight to check. Fantastic piece if it's there. That one reminds me of your work W!zard, Notice how he reuses the buildings in the background. Also taking away the bottom half of the building to appear like another type. In one case he only change the steeple top to make the whole building appear new. Clever work. |

@Steinie - Are you pulling my leg here? I don't think Matthieu used DOF at all in 'Pursuit'. He has used fog to keep attention in the foreground in much the same way that DOF can be used. The fog washes out the background but it's still in focus therefore it's not truly DOF which produces a similar effect using focus.
Either way if his work reminds you of mine then thats pretty flattering - the guy is a certifiable genius IMO. My favourite image of his would have to be 'Dream'.
@Splinters - we're all our own harshest critics IMO, and the comparison between Matthieus work and yours is definitely valid. Don't sell yourself short! The adventures of Harold in particular spring to mind as being comparable thanks to the whimsical and cartoony reality thing you both do. Matthieu's work is perhaps more surreal - after all he IS French!! |
