Does anyone know how compatible Vista is with the new version of tS? Also, from as far as I've seen, .COB files have been a real pain with Microsoft's new OS. You can't move them, copy them, delete them, rename them, or do any other basic actions to them within Windows Explorer, only when viewing them from a TS object library. Are any other Vista/tS users having this issue?
And is it fixed?!!
Just hoping the answers are the ones I'm hoping for; it may decide whether or not I end up buying tS7.5:( |

I have no problem doing all that stuff in Vista.
I think you have to take "ownership" of your pre-existing files. Lets say you have a folder full of .cobs. Right click on the folder, select properties, security, advanced, owner. Then use edit to change the owner of the file (which would be your old windows ownership), to your curent user name.
I took ownership of all my drive partitions, first thing, and have no problems renameing, moveing, deleting ect.

I'm using TS6.6 at the moment and have no real problems (it crashes when I exit occasionally) so I would imagine it would be fine but that's just a guess.
I would imagine there are a few testers using Vista and since 6.6 works I wouldn't be concerned. I've definitely not had problems moving or renaming files. Have you the thumbnail software installed? I've had problems with that crashing explorer and I uninstalled it - this was on XP, but funnily enough, when I upgraded to Vista it was fine. |

Thanks for that advice Kurt I will try that. I couldn't copy a scene file to a USB stick last night, I had to reboot to XP to do it grrr

I would say defininitely a Windows permissions issue. Vista is all over-protective, for instance I can't do anything to the root C:\ drive without lots of warning dialogs, whether I am creating a file there, copying one there, etc, of any type.
Many directories on C: seem to inherit this over-protectiveness by default too, and my guess is something like this is what is happening to you. I can't say tS7.5 is any better than tS7.11 there, because it isn't a tS issue as such (I have both 7.11 and 7.5 running succesfully on Ultimate 32 bit), so I don't think anything in 7.5 will make this issue any different than you are finding it on 7.11.
I can only think of the usual - did you run the install as an admin, are you logged in as an admin when this happens, did you set tS to allow all users access to the tS folders when installed, etc.

I can't make my argument with a whole lot of proof, seeing as I can't access the properties window for any .cob files, but the files in question were all created on my new PC (Vista), and therefore I think that Windows is giving me full rights to them.
I've recorded the problem with a screen grab program, so you can see it for yourself. Here:

Just try to take ownership of them.
As stated before Vista is overprotected, people having problems with sound etc. needs to give permission for analog audio etc.
In your case it might be to hinder viruses, there are settings in vista removing this behaviour but that kind of takes it away as well but I know people have removed the double 'are you really sure' option.

This article shows a bit what is involved but from a virus protecting point of view, I'll see if I find anything useful for you later...

SOmethings wrong.
I noticed when you dragged a cob file over ( from the drive D:), to the new folder on E: you created, the copy dialog box said you were moving from the root of E:, to the folder on E:.
Which is it? Are you copying from D: to E:, or root E: to a folder on E:?
If the cobs are on the root of E:, open computer, right click on the E: drive, and check the ownership/permisions in the security section of properties.
If you are the only user on your machine, make sure ALL the users have full access to the drive (read/write/move /delete) ect.

53Mb is a wee bit too big for me to download for a screengrab :( Any chance the file could be made smaller? I can get a minute or two at large resolutions in around 1 or 2 Mb depending, so it should be possible.
Sounds like someone may be onto something with the odd message about the E drive though.
Thanks!

I checked the drive and I have full control. These files were created and saved on this PC, with full permissions, so I think that it's a compatibility issue. This only seems to happen with files using these extensions:
*.COB
*.SCN
*.TSP
Also, I tried renaming a .txt file as .cob, and I was able to move it, copy it, and delete it...though after I copied it to a separate location it started doing this, even though it wasn't really a .cob file.
As a note, whenever I've had to uninstall trueSpace on this PC, it fails to do so because the files under the above extensions remain on the disc.
In case anybody was unable to download the screengrab because of it's size, here's a link to a lower quality version:

I've seen this with vista. What you also need to do is make sure the user you are logged in as has full control over the files. It seems strange but as the owner you don't necessarily have full rights. Don't do this to the whole disk but just where the files you want are - the folder basically, and apply this to all sub-folders as well.
I can't think of anything else that might work but this may do the job. |

I've not seen this myself, or heard of anyone else with it - might be a good time to contact Microsoft too and ask them about it.
Personally I also always create a folder on a different drive (even if it is just a logical drive) and store all my stuff there, leaving the C: drive for Windows and program installs only. Not because of Vista mind you, I've been doing that for years (easier to defrag them separately, easier to move data around when shifting to new computers / drives / doing backups, etc).
Of course this has meant I avoid all the weirdness that Vista does with the C:\ drive.
That said, I can easily go into my tS7 folder and rename, copy and delete COB files.
BTW did you reinstall tS with Run As Admin for the install, while logged in as an admin, while ensuring UAC is active, and then changing the icon to run tS so that it is always "Run As Admin" too? Also, you haven't run any registry cleaning software at any point since the install (since particular file types are being problematic, it could be something has been deleted or changed in the registry, changing how Vista views these files).

I've tried contacting MS, but Vista came on my PC, so they charge you for the service. I don't feel like blowing $50.00 on service that might not help...especially when there are forums like this which are quite good at it. |

I agree with you there!
One thing I don't recall - which version of Windows is this? I'm using Ultimate 32 bit, and not seeing any troubles, but then there are differences in how they handle security so it may be version related.
Thanks!

Bunch of things to try in this odd situation
1. What happens when you load these objects into tS, do they load normally? (will prove the file is readable on the HD)
2. What happens when you save these objects back into the same file from tS? (will prove the file is writable)
3. What happens when you save a new object, a cube or something, from tS to the same folder, does it show the same problems?
4. What happens when you save one of these objects and a new object to a different folder (preferably on a different drive)?
5. What do you see when you check file associations for these file types? (the Opens With option in the properties - is tS still associated, what other programs does it offer you, what happens if you change it to be associated with Notepad, can you then move them?)
No idea why this is happening, so only thing to do is try numerous tests and see if that helps isolate the cause!

I can easily save, read, overwrite, and delete files from within tS (using the object library). The problem is when I do any of these actions in Windows Explorer. Also, I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate Edition (32 bit).
I originally had the idea that this was a known problem, but it appears that I am the one and only (for now:p). In case this wasn't specified, I'm running tS version 6.6, so it may just be the old file types that do this (anyone mind running a test?). |

I've heard of some people having problems with windows explorer and moving files - I've had the odd issue with that as well to be fair.
What to do is try a move command from a cmd window to see if that will work. You could also do a save as and save the file to a new location. |
