Both are required. If you wanted to model in NURBS or (are there any left?) a metaball modelling person then you wouldn't be able to use the Workspace. People ask why not make a COB importer for the Workspace - the Bridge IS a COB importer but isn;t just limited to that simple task, it enables a huge range of extra functionality as well.
Metaballs are still useful for dealing with liquids - and many high-end liquid simulation apps still use a type of metaball object to simulate the liquids.

Now I've had a chance to play with it properly..well, a few hours anyway, I wish to share my thoughts.
1. The workspace - It looks fantastic. I wish there were handles on the objects so it would be easier to resize but I guess you just go into the modeller.
2. The sizer/rotate control in the workspace. I really like this but It's in the way. Is there a way of moving this.?
3. Rendering. I had a few issues here where I took a project from 6.6 and copied it into the 7.5 project folder then opened it. Clicking render did nothing until I reset the configuration back to the default. It worked fine after that. I also managed to mess it up playing with a few settings.
Is there a way to render while in workspace? I've not found it yet and to be fair I've not read the manual either....
4. In the characters library, the 4 characters with hair don't seem to work. Am I missing something. Also, when using a model with DX shaders it kills TS. It would be good to see it warn the user and not render with them or something.
5. Rendering seems to work well in the modeller. I can't really fault it and I don't have any serious scenes that take a long time to test the speed.
I like the look of the package and it seems easy to use. It took me a while to find the point edit snapping tool which I really wanted.
What I really don't understand is why there are 2 sets of tools for primitives in the different views...am I completely missing the point?
The other thing I'm wondering about is how you can render from a camera point of view...
Anyway, attached is some scene I've been playing with. It's pretty basic but I had fun creating it. It was mostly done in 6.6 but this is rendered in 7.5. It
takes around 30 seconds to render, probably with default settings. |

thanx brotherx for the insight
seems like workspace is not as flexible at this stage, I can't imagine not having the widgets while modeling - reminds me of Lightwave - they have never had transform gizmos in the interface. |

I'll let the Big Guns answer your questions but I like your rendering. It proves your now a TS user...the time on the clock MUST be 3:00 AM and your sharing your experience with someone else, hence two cups of coffee! (I take mine black):) |

I got distracted from a piano model I am working on and did this instead. Took maybe a couple of hours to put together. I want to change the spoons to be a bit more rounded - I've also been working on a model for them.
I just don't have the time and I wish I could do it full time but no such luck. |

I think the characters in the library may be haircuts only (the thumbnail will probably show the scene from where they were saved) so when you drag them into the workspce they will apply the haircut to an active object...:D |

2. The sizer/rotate control in the workspace. I really like this but It's in the way. Is there a way of moving this.?Yeah, I prefer the bounding box myself too. That generally stays out of the way. That darn widget just plops itself right in front of your work. You can hide the widget though in the "Desktop" panel in the stack. Just change it's aspect to "widgets" (button in top right corner of the panel) and there you can select to hide or reveal specific widgets.
Is there a way to render while in workspace? I've not found it yet and to be fair I've not read the manual either....You can render Vray1.5 or the realtime view from the workspace. There are render buttons for those in the toolbars at the bottom. Vray render is more to the left side, and realtime render is in the far right corner. You can only render Lightworks and Virtualight from the model side though.
What I really don't understand is why there are 2 sets of tools for primitives in the different views...am I completely missing the point?Model and workspace are two different architectures. See THIS (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showpost.php?p=33026&postcount=42) post. So the new tools are being written into the new architecture (workspace) and the old tools (model) are kept in for backward compatibility while they re-write trueSpace. So the primitives on the workspace side are the "new" primitive tools, and the model primitives are the old ones.
The other thing I'm wondering about is how you can render from a camera point of view...You just select the camera and then set the view to it by clicking on the camera icon in the toolbar. Then when you render it will render the view your seeing from the camera. Is that what you are asking? |

Not what you are looking for but before I save my 'model' layout as trueSpace6.6, I minimise the workspace toolbars to two little dark dots and drag them into the right hand side of the status bar. Now I don't use model/workspace tabs, I simply switch between my trueSpace 7.5 layout (workspace set up just as I want it) and tS6.6 layout (model side just as I want it) and no toolbars as the minimsed state is remembered.
This is still just one click to switch between the two modes and it works well. Hey, you might even be able to turn the bridge off too.
Thanks. This is indeed a solution. But now i have the feeling that the Modeler/Workspace tabs are not longer needed and in the way ... :D |

Instead of Minimizing the Workspace toolbars in Model you can just close them with the X button and then save your layout. But you will not have them when you switch back and forth from Model to Workspace. But if you do as Splinters has suggested by switching by way of layouts one for Workspace and one for Model it does work in this way. Not sure this would be the recommended way to work between the different programs but my be worth a try. |

Ahh, well have a play with those tabs, you are no longer limited to having just layouts on them. You can assign objects and shaders to tabs then apply them in Workspace and a lot more besides..... |

First impressions...
Downloaded TrueSpace 7.5 last night and installed it, all went smoothly. Then launched it and after a couple of seconds, the new Workspace appeared. My eyes flew in a cirular pattern around the new interface, taking in the new look, this new TrueSpace environment. I thought the jump from TrueSpace 2 to 5 was a major interface departure, but going fom 5 to a brief encounter with 6.6 and then up to 7.5 was a real departure from the interface I've come to know so well.
For a second, I actually wondered if this really was TrueSpace? But a few friendly faces in the form of the libraries to the right, the lights in the work space, and one or two of the icons reassured me that I was indeed home. The town had evolved, quite a bit indeed, but I was home. And then after a few moments of silence, I finally spoke...
"Er... Where are all my tools gone? Where's all my icons!?!"
LOL!
Well, what a departure indeed. I spent about ten minutes just absorbing the interface, not touching anything, just absorbing the new interface. I then started to explore. I didn't have a lot of time to do so but after about ten more minutes, I was quite impressed and completely lost! LOL!!
I loaded a few objects into the Workspace and and was very impressed by the real time shadows on show. Took me a few minutes but I finally located where all my primatives had moved to. Have no clue where the render button is, LOL!, but I'll find it. Oh, and there's a button that says VRay Rendering, or something like that, but I don't have VRay?!?!?!?
Just as when I moved up to TrueSpace 5 and was lost on that interface, so kept TrueSpace 2 on my computer for some time before I was comfortable enough to work fully with version 5, TrueSpace 5.1 and 6.6 won't be coming off my computer for the immediate future. Going to have to explore this new 7.5 interface and delve into the manual for a bit of help. I'm very impressed with the new design, and what I've seen so far, but this is definately a departure from what I know so well. It feels like I'm back at the very first time I installed and loaded up TrueSpace 1.
"Ok... How do I make a cube...?"

If you click on the trueSpace6 tab at the top it will bring you to what will probably be a more familiar layout. Then you can switch back to the default layout later and delve into the new architecture at your leisure. :)

Thanks Délé. That's exactly what I was looking for.
Unfortunately, I don't have VRay - couldn't afford it as I'm buying a new house...:( |

From second post in Captains Blog
Here are some of the first examples of displacement mapping, all created by SteveBe. Althought the tools are in early stage, Steve was able to use them in an way we did not quite anticipate.
How was these made? |

Thanks Peter, to get the glow effect set your second GI bounces setting to higher than first bounce setting (I used 1.5 for second, 1.0 for first). Works in VRay 1.0 , tS7.11 as well.
...they're VRay.
I'd like to use glowing material in 7.5 if possible. Looks possible seeing your shots

I was a bit frustrated at first when playing around with the workplace modeling tools. The add/select edge loop is a great addition, but I kept on looking for the old "point move/scale" buttons. I finally started playing around with the widget that pops up when you have an edge selected, and it is actually pretty nice, no more frustration :) When I figured out how to scale those in multiple directions at the same time (i.e. hold RMB), I was much happier. I'm used to the old 6.x style and didn't use 7.x much because of the dual interface, but I think Caligari has got it right this time. I'm starting to "see the light" and actually looking forward to spending some time on the "new" side. Been a user since TS SE and I'll I can say is wow, they sure have come a long way! |

etrasti, See your starting to "get it" The more you play with the new software the nicer it becomes. Wrinkles..yep, but the power and potential at your finger tips is amazing. Once a lot of the issues are addressed more and more of you will start to see the light!
Some of you liked the old way and thats ok. But the old way is coming to an end. I still like old cars but I wouldn't buy another one.
If more of you just turned off the bridge for one week and stayed on the workPlace side I think you would start "getting it" |

Thanks, Délé, found that fairly quickly myself. It's nice to be able to switch back to the interface I know but while I'll probably be doing so on and off for a while, I'm sure I'll pick up the new Workspace very quickly. I'm reading through the manual which I have to admit is doing my head in! I don't mind reading PDF files, sure I create them myself for my own needs, but I hate reading manuals on my computer. Can't wait for my boxed version to arrive so I can grab hold of the physical version, take it to bed with my highlighter pen and really delve into it. But I'm doing well. I really like the new TrueSpace 7.5. It rocks! |

My personal Impression !
Why we have a model and a workspace site ? i don´t like the Bridge
Why it is impossible to hide the workspace icons when i am in the model window ?
Well so far I have to say I like it all really - I think that in tS7.11 the bridge lost a lot of it's appeal as there were insufficient modelling tools in the workspace (then called 'player'). Now I must say that I love the bridge! I have a dual monitor setup, and have a 'Model' view window set almost completely covering one monitor. The other monitor has the stack, object info box, a Workplace window and a LE window (which still baffles me but at least helps me get around my7 heirarchies).
This arrangement lets me access the old modeling tools in Model view, LightWorks renderer, LW Mat editor, TSX's and all the old familiear bells and whistles including the old scene editor, all on the one monitor whilst simultaneously giving me access to all the great new workspace modeling tools (LOOOVE the soft selection tool) and the new character posing tools. The more I've used this arrangement the more I've wondered how the set up could possibly have been improved!
Click on left monitor/modeler view use old toolset and watch the info shoot across the bridge and update the workspace view in the other monitor. Want to select some vertexes with the soft selector? Click in the right hand monitor to access the new PE tools and watch the model view update at the same time - sheer bloody brilliance!
But wait! There's more! This arrangement lets me place those supposedly sticky icons out of the way somewhere on my Workplace monitor well away from my modeler monitor - excellent!
It's my prediction that unless Caligari do a first rate job of integrating the LightWorks renderer into the workspace (tS 8?) there will be people who like the bridge so much they will complain when it finally disappears! |

W!Z,
I agree. I'm already bracing myself for the inevitable - but you know Caligari will do an excellent job of pulling all the tools over, and then some :)
My new thoughts are about the LE (which I know absolutely nothing about at the moment) It's sooo deep! I wonder from the looks of it now what Caligari has in store for it in the future? That's one of the things that amazes me about the program - incredibly deep and always evolving...

I feel the LE is there for YOU not them. It allows users to get into the internals IF they want to. It's an option to gain more control of TS. You don't have to use it. Some of us will love it some of us won't care but it's great we now have the option. |
