Uh...sorry if I missed this info somewhere, but what, exactly, is "Golden Master?" I've seen that title in several places but never really got a definition.

Back in the Bronze Age of computing when CD-R's were new and sparkly they were gold coloured. The Gold master is the final CD-R with the finished application that is sent to the duplicators to create the Glass master CD which in turn is used to press the CD yoo put in in yer drive.:)

Now that we are living in 'modern times' I do not know if glass masters are still used....

Cheers

Golden Master? Sounds like a Buddhist martial arts superhero - perhaps he uses golden disks as ninja stars?

the "Gold Master" term dates from well before compact discs.

IIRC back in the days of 12 inch vinyl long playing phonograph records it was customary for the final mix from the studio tapes to be etched onto a gold master - literally a gold record. From this gold master the stamping dies were cast for the actual manufacture of the vinyl records themselves.

Should a recording be sufficiently popular - ie sell enough copies - to warrant a further pressing then a new gold master would be made. New stamping dies would be cast from this new gold master (the original stamps were customarily destroyed after the first print run for copyright and anti-piracy reasons I believe).

In such cases it became customary to present the original gold master records to the performing artists - hence the term gold record and derivative terms such as 'Solid Gold hits' and so on.

In terms of modern computer software I suspect that gold (the metal) plays very little part and the Gold Master refered to here is actually a finalised file incorporating all the bells and whistles in the form that the software will finally be released. "
