Just received this month's issue of 3D World where they have the results of this years Roncarelli report on the top 3D Apps. trueSpace (no particular number) comes in at number 4 just behind 3DS Max, but number one is Blender (a free app) and number 2 is Adobe Flash?!?
So, from a 'paid' point of view I guess that makes it number two..not bad eh?
Then again, maybe they are also counting the 'free' versions of tS...max has no such free versions.
Bit more confusing when you read that these are the top 10 apps used in computer animation...
Maya was 10 by the way with Cinema 4D at 7...
Speaking of 3D World, tS did not get a mention in this month's software roundup. Also, I wonder when they will review it... |

An interesting story. Will have to wait till it gets to the US before I get to read it though. I'm curious how Poser and Bryce and other such programs faired on the list (or off the list?)
Sounds good for trueSpace though!

Well, I can tell you exactly how it read...
1. Blender
2. Flash
3. 3DS MAX
4. Truespace
5. Strata 3D
6. Lightwave
7. Cinema 4D
8. Hash Animation Master
9. Carrara
10. Maya
11. SketchUP
12. Softimage XSI
13. Electric Image (EIAS)
14. Realsoft 3D
15. Retas!Pro
16. Toon Boom Studio
17. Houdini
18. Animo
I guess it must only be packages that have animation capabilities. |

I am surprised Blender is number 1, they must count all of the dl's for all of the versions, which is probably why some of the programs are higher on the list than I would expect. Blender being free is on just about every 3D artists HD, how many use it? That is another story. I bet I dl that program once a year... I use it for 10 minutes evey year, as soon as I find that same old interface is still there :D
Very interesting to see this though. Flash and Toon Boon are very popular, for 2D animation tools.

It would be interesting to see what Blender's place would be if it wasn't free. I think it's a good result though, nevertheless.
Also good to see old-schoolers like Strata getting on the list.
I wonder if Vray integration helped trueSpace? The fact I was offered Vray for 200 bucks was the main aspect of 7.5 that got me excited. There's no way I could afford to have it otherwise.
When you consider value for money trueSpace is no Blender, but it's right up there. |

This would be a chart of downloads/sales not of product quality surely? |

There's a guy I work with who uses blender for doing some simple 3D models, the same reason I really kick-started my use of TS. I personally think blender sucks. I tried imported a .X file I had saved in truespace and it failed...couldn't get any of my models to import at all.
I guess it's a familiarity thing. I didn't think too much of TS when I first got it either but once I got the hang of it, mainly by watching the training videos, I figured it was quite easy to use. |

i really dont think this list is very good...
using houdini 9 and its amazing with mentalray and renderman
eias is amazing too
think its ease of use maybe but not quality and flexibility HAHAHAHA
the price has to do with allot of this too...i just dropped 10,000 on houdina master and few moths ago eias and i am flat broke
so saying
(This would be a chart of downloads/sales not of product quality surely?)
is maybe price driven |

Having owned the licenses of five on the list is somewhat comforting, but makes me fickle I think.
Papa Roman should be proud regardless. |

statistic is only good as the writer manipulate "or how can i translate it from german to english" ?
I think this is a fake list and don´t tell the truth.
Blender and Truespace comes more in the last places, Max is surely the most using 3d application together with maya, C4D and LW or so.
What´s goingon with ZBrush, Modo, Silo ? |

I think before you don your tinfoil hat you should do a bit more research into the source of this list, and why they made it. One irony is that the report itself costs more than most of the apps it researched.
The only thing that surprised me was strata - but they've worked hard to accommodate designers that use the Adobe Suite, of which there are millions, so perhaps not such a big surprise. |

Memory fails me but I believe this list was based on installations/licenses sold or registered. Given the amount of 'free' versions of tS available in the past, that would explain its high entry. It certainly was not a top 20 (18?) based on quality or review scores. Also it was compiled during the year leading up to the results where some newer apps could still have been considered 'fledgling'.

Blender is a PITA at first and ends(there is no foreseeable end) on a powerful as hell note.
It is fair to say it is the most difficult to pick up.
tS is easy to pickup, but does have it's limits from an artists pov. |
