Any known way to get the standard Control Cage widgets to display in Workspace? They are more intuitive and far easier to use than the new tiny three axis widget. Is there a switch or setting somewhere that turns them on? If the cage widget wasn't 'broke,' why did someone have to go and 'fix it'?

It's not like fixing, it's rewriting for workspace, and I guess it's not been very high on the priority list.

yes I too miss the selectionbox widget and want it in workspace :(
it IS the better widget :D ..you dev guys need to implement object boundingbox so it can be implemented

they have one for UV in 7.5 but it doesn't match the object's boundingbox or work as well as the one in model

and I usually end up going to the model side to move or resize or even edit an object.

Embrace the vidget!;)

I like the new ones (as in 7.1) better because they are size independent whereas sometimes the oldstyle ones required you to zoom-in, in order to see the widget component you were actually trying to grab. (Take heart Roman.)

Don't you fret none there Roman. I'm a' here til' the cows come home...git goo.

Whatever all that means.

I just feel like widgets are slow, cumbersome, and frilly...adding no more functionality than pasting a pretty picture to the screen. It slows you down but gives you something to look at....I hope no one takes this the wrong way....it's just the way I feel for my use. Everyone has a method that's right for them. Widgets aren't for me.

the widget has potential BUT I hate how it sizes things. I love it for rotating and move works well....

I like the old way of sizing as you can size from one side...or am I missing something...

Wow! I'm really surprised to read this! The new widget seems far superior to the old bounding box to me. It allows me to manipulate everything from a single vertex to a selection to the complete model all in the same way. The scale rotate and move operations are smoother and come with a wider range of actions and when used in conjunction with the 'Q', 'W' and 'E' hotkeys (for object, world and screen coordinates) the ease of use seems far better to me.

I love that I can easily move any item from a single vertex up, in any plane direction (the triangle) and in a single direction (X.Y or Z) by using the bar. Combined with the fact that eye or camera rotation is now around the point of edit rather than the set axis also greatly improves modelling flexibility. Combined with the 'L' hotkey which I have set for the 'look at object function and the other modelling tools I find that - particularly for point editing, the new tri-widget is far faster and offers far more control options.

It didn't take long to become as easy and natural to use as earlier methods like the bounding box. I set myself the goal of attempting the latest speed model challenge using only the new editing tools and found it very easy to pick up.

Also right click on triangles moves in constrained axis.
Right click squares scales equally.

Background widget also supports Look at selected object by MMB Double click.
Background widget also supports two ways to zoom too.
MMB wheel zooms/moves linear
Shift + MMB wheel zooms FOV
Also try
MMB drag with and without selected object
Shift + MMB drag
Ctrl + MMB drag

Well, yippy-skippy, I guess I'll check the box titled 'Wishful Thinking'.

So riddle me this: Without using the axis tool, can the new widget quickly and visually allow you to change an object's axis of rotation?

The cage facilitated this by right click dragging on the rotation diamonds.
The modern equivalent is:?

Also, define 'background widget'.

there is a way to move the axis[circa ts7.5] but no way to bring it to tne max or min bounds accurately..its the 'show object axis' tool..but there is no axis for faces etc, so no way at all to rotate or scale by an edge

background widget means those functions done with mouxe or mouse and keys

Ok, I figured it out but I think it's a little cumbersome. (resizing without moving the opposite face) I figured I would go into point-edit mode, select the face or edge I want to adjust and move it in the direction I want to size the whole shape in using the widget. It works I suppose but it's not as quick as the cage.

Is there a better way?

My problem is not so much with the capabilities of the widget, but lack of feedback on which object the widget is attached to when selecting objects in the workspace! In the image below can you tell which object is actually selected based on the widget position?

Guess it right and you will get a banana

Here's another 'you-know-what'...while modeling in WS, hit the '3d window' icon and switch the view to Model - you can use the Scene editor if you need it (or not)

Again, hope this helps,

What is the "3d window" (maybe a picture) and what problem does your posted solution solve? Thanks.

You could change Wire Highlight to Objects and that will help.

I'm still trying to get this 'posting picture' thing down, so please bear with me.

First Pic is Model window in WS window so you can see what you've selected

Your method is perfect as you can see below. Now I can see what is selected:

Now if you can just share the manual YOU ARE USING as this feature is not in the current manual. Thanks again!

Whoops, I thought this was documented. It is a feature myself and many other testers pushed for during development. It is particularly useful in wireframe render mode where you can have selected wireframe highlighted just like in model side. One of my favourite new features...:)

WWitch helped me solve this exact same problem in another thread. The program should default to this setting to help beginners with the Software.

yes agreed, it took abit to realize where to change colours for the selection but it's very useful, but isn't the selectionbox widget..which in 7.5 it's functionality is sorely missed for the things it does :D

I don't know about moving it, but I read something about turning it off - don't know where exactly, but probably in the rt hand stack - oops, just found it ...Settings, desktop, under the 'default' drop-down, change to 'widgets' click off 'pt edit'.
