I wish it would, that is a feature I would love to see in TS, I can use it in other programs, hopefully in future versions we see it.

Uh, sorry, I thought you meant something else... I thought you were talking about moving around geometry after it had been placed on the geometry after the texture were in place...
What you want to do I am working my way to. After my next post, which I am ready to do now I will be doing a walkthru on how to model like that in WS and do some detailing in Model side with this church.
Sorry mfor the confussion :p

There's always this (http://forums.caligari.com/discus/messages/1585/9582.html?) or that (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=1474) approach. |

In post #24 I posted 2 pictures, one was the pano we started with, the second a cleaned up texture on the 2D plane, getting the cleaned up 2D plane is very simple in TS, I like to use the WS side and use the modeling tools over there for this.
Pic#1 is the 3 textures from the church in Model side, center gable section needs to be trimmed up to clean up the model.
Pic#2 is the model on WS side, Select the center gable object
Right mouse click to bring yourself into Point Edit Mode (PE)
Select the Add Edge Tool as shown in the picture
Carefully trace a line around the roof. I started in the left hand side at the bottom of the valley, left mouse click to put a vertice there than move your way around the roof line till you get to the same point on the other side.
Pic#3 the roof line has now been cut, I went and selected the face above the gable front and I am ready to delete it using the PE Tool Delete Element Tool.
You have now cleaned up the stained glass gable and it looks as I showed it in my previous pictures.
Now lets get ready to cut in some detail into our model.

Last post on this, sorry to those that are bored with it already :)...
A this point you have 2 cubes each on a corner of our object, there is a 2D plane in between them. The picture shows where we are. What we want to do now is cut in a little detail into our cube. This can be done very easily in TS 7.5 using the Add Loop Tool in the PE.
Pic # 2 is some loops I cut in, alls I had to do was follow the details of the texture below. I do not have to be very precise, just reasonably close. Cut in the loops now we can start to do a little more detailing.
Pic#3 is the Normal Sweep Tool in action, I used the select loop Tool to highlite a couple of loops than using the Normal Sweep Tool with the CTRL key pressed pulled out an extruded edge.
This technique can be used on doors, windows, cornice moldings, ledges, parapits... just about anything for modeling like I am doing here. The texture will hide much of what is not there, as long as the model stays alittle in the background this will work just fine...
I am done.

Absolutely amazing stuff Rich!!!
I was hoping someone who knew the ropes would inject some life into this thread and you most definitely have! Well done and a very helpful tutorial!
Isn't doing this kind of stuff fun? There's a boatload of people out there ready to pay handsomely to anyone willing to recreate their architectural treasures in 3D too, whether it's for websites, VR Tours, CD Tours, or "DollHouse Models" made with STL. Lots of detailed work for sure but rewarding work for sure. ;)
Thanks for all help and insight on this stuff, I'm really enjoying it a lot! :D

[SIZE=2]@ RichLevy - Thanks for the replies and for the excellent photos!
Is that hole under the bridge actual (hole) geometry or an image plane, by the way?
[
- 3dvisuals dude
The answer to this question... it can be either... do you need to make a bridge with a path under it? I can cut out the entrance to under the bridge easy enough, the canal than remains a part of the path your character can follow. Or the texture can remain on and block your character from moving thru.
I had originally built it to be a tru bridge that you could walk under. I made a canal system that was going to be part of an industrial fortress idea I am playing around with. Part of the idea here was to see how I could do it, using panos to create part of the environments and than ripping the textures is working very well. The more things I try with this technique the more I realize there really are no limitations. With some basic knowledge of photography, my camera, how to shoot panoramas, some basic photography equipment, PhotoShop CS3Extended and TrueSpace 7.5 I can make some VERY realistic environments in hours that would have taken me weeks or more before.
Very fun technique, it allows me now to build full environments where before I was far more limited. TS is not Sketchup yet... but it is a reasonable alternative, and it has far more power in areas where Sketchup just does not even compete.
More to follow.

This is really fascinating stuff Rich. Thanks for staying with this thread!
Hopefully your input will inspire some "lurker" out there with related talents to join in with you here at a similarly competent level, that would be fun too.
The "canal system" and "industrial fortress idea" you are "playing around with" also sounds intriguing! Are you thinking about some form of future MMO usage for that?
I'm looking very heavily into setting up a few MMO's for social and corporate usage myself (along with others) over the next several years. Fascinating opportunities are becoming possible in that arena now with the advancement of common technologies, and I'm extremely excited about capitalizing soon on several of them worldwide.
I just wish I was 20 years younger for all this stuff! ;)

Actually I was thinking more along the lines of a shared space environment. Geometry wise it is very low poly. I am sure I would have to down sample many of the textures in order for TP to handle them, but I think it would be a very doable project and would be a great place to explore :D.
There still are kinks in the amour as it is now, I get going into the system and I run into problems with the software, my workflow, and fine tuning the pipeline... but I am becoming more productive within the workflow, I am learning to attack the modeling problems better, and hopefully as TS matures I will run into less problems from the software.
As far as being an expert on this... it's as new to me as it is for many other people here. PhotoShop CS3 really allows this to happen for me, it was the spark that pushed me to try doing this to the scale I am now. Before I was only toying around with a model here and there.
As far as the bridge over the canal... I want to go back and re shoot much of that area all over again. If I shoot 2 panos of the bridge area, 1 on each side of the bridge. I would be able to recreate the true look and feel of the scene. I am still experimenting so all of this is just a way for me to bounce around ideas and think of new things to do.
In some ways the creation process of the environment is like making a movie. You start with an idea, than you try to make a theme/or plot... now you need to map the idea, make a world for characters to live in. Than make your environment have a flow to it. I have a bunch of disjointed places right now, and vague ideas how I want the places to connect... I really need to fine tune it along though. If I can keep TS from crashing on me and loosing my scenes it would help the forward progress some :D...

Thanks Rich,
Like Burnart (above) I'm really enjoying your input in this thread a lot. I've learned a lot already from the experiences which you've shared with us here, and given the interesting nature of this thread's subject it may end up being a thread with quite a bit of longevity here as more people discover it in time.
Actually I was thinking more along the lines of a shared space environment. Geometry wise it is very low poly. I am sure I would have to down sample many of the textures in order for TP to handle them, but I think it would be a very doable project and would be a great place to explore :D.
Excellent! Whenever I do actually set up my planned MMO / shared space server setups I'll get in touch with you and bounce a few ideas back and forth on some related possibilities, it could be a lot of fun for us both.
Yeah, truePlay and trueServe do have pretty severe texture size limitations at the moment due to the way cacheing is currently implemented, but I suspect that with the introduction of DX9 Shaders as both softwares are upgraded from their existing TS7 Compatability to the planned TS7.5x Compatability perhaps the textures will be able to be much larger... not sure, but hope so.
There still are kinks in the amour as it is now, I get going into the system and I run into problems with the software, my workflow, and fine tuning the pipeline... but I am becoming more productive within the workflow, I am learning to attack the modeling problems better, and hopefully as TS matures I will run into less problems from the software.
Ditto. I'm also dealing with this daily and know exactly how you feel. I'm confident though that once TS7.51 ships with it's automatic error reporting system many of the existing critters in the sys will be rapidly eliminated.;)
As far as being an expert on this... it's as new to me as it is for many other people here. PhotoShop CS3 really allows this to happen for me, it was the spark that pushed me to try doing this to the scale I am now. Before I was only toying around with a model here and there.
Well after seeing what you've done with CS3 already here I think that what you have posted here will be "the spark" that pushes several of us to go the same direction which you have with this, very inspiring posts.
I work this way too. I find that when I'm deeply involved in examining something which I created earlier the creative process itself has always somehow expanded / evolved since my last examination of that given creation, and always in entirely new directions. I live for that rush!:D
In some ways the creation process of the environment is like making a movie. You start with an idea, than you try to make a theme/or plot... now you need to map the idea, make a world for characters to live in. Than make your environment have a flow to it. Rich
Again... ditto! I have a huge number of 3D Models suitable for use in shared spaces (over 2000 if I include those made over the years which could be used with slight modifications and poly reduction) and man... do I ever know what you mean by having "a bunch of disjointed places right now, and vague ideas how I want the places to connect..."!
It's always great when I just start building a scene from scratch and remember that I already built a perfect companion model for it which I can just locate and readily add to it! Sure saves a lot of work in the flow!
Anyhow... I hope you keep adding to this thread from time to time because I know I'm not alone at all in appreciating what you bring to it.
Thanks again,

Hahaha... yeah, it does sound a tad ominous, but then this is Caligari - not The Evil Empire in this case! ;)
I just went fumbling around in here looking for the related post ( a reply in a problem thread here somewhere from TomG I think ) where it was mentioned in passing... maybe the big C should start a thread about it to calm everyone's little (and not so little) frustrations... maybe a good idea?
If I spot it again I'll edit this reply with the link... too few hours in a day!;)
EDIT: Found the link, and it was "tomasb," not "TomG." Here ya go:

If anyone reading this thread is looking for new ways to enjoy your existing or planned architectural models interactively in TS7.5x read this post:
http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showpost.php?p=37812&postcount=1
I'm an absolute fumbling newbie with TS Scripting but I'm already seeing light at the end of the tunnel in my efforts to tackle the scripting for the "switch" referred to in that post. Whether I manage to do it or someone else does I'm certain that it can be done and I'm determined to see that it does get done.
With the simple "switch" prototype referred to in that post we could turn all our offline architectural models and scene projects into interactive environments which we could each share and develop offline right within trueSpace 7.5x, turning our TS7.5x Workspaces into active game development environments.
As mentioned there though I could definitely use some help on the "switch" methods so if you're able to help with it please do, it would be a lot of fun for all of us and would breathe life into all our architectural models for sure!

Great News Folks!!!!!!!!
In the "Open Elevator Project" near the end of the thread trueBlue just gave us all an absolutely fantastic new scripting tool that will bring genuine interactivity to your TS7.5x Architectural models and scenes!!!
Here's the thread link: http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=3304 It started as an elevator project but grew!
(Download the file which he uploaded and examine it closely in the LE, it enables FPN script activation inside your structures!!!)
Check it out... you're going to love the powers this will give you now! :D
Please be sure to thank him there, what he did for us all is truly fantastic.

http://www.romereborn.virginia.edu/
Thanks Spacekdet!
That is an interesting project, it'll also be a great resource for modelers according to their stated intent in the Virtual Rome online reconstruction effort in that they plan to make all the related architectural plans and drawings open to the public and other modelers online as they do this!
Very cool indeed! Thanks for the "heads up" on it!
Bring on the Holodeck!
Hahahahaha.... yeah... I guess I am awfully excited about this new FPN Script Trigger and what it can do for us all now!
Holodeck? Why not!!! :D
It can easily be attached to Délé's excellent object visibilty/invisibilty script, so I don't see why we couldn't use it accordingly to say...
...re-arrange all the furniture and textures in a room with a single left click on a statuette in a room as you walk through the room in First Person Navigation in TS7.5 or truePlay on your hardrive or eventually online!
You could also use it while walking out the door of an architectural model of say... an igloo. Just Left Click on the Sun overhead and the igloo becomes a grass hut and suddenly all around you is a panoramic view of the Tahitian beach! :D I don't know about you but I could use a vacation like that!!!;)
A Holodeck would be a lot of fun, and the best thing is any one of us can do that now (just by hooking objects or poly's to this Script Object and some activity Script within the Link Editor) thanks to trueBlue's new FPN Script Trigger Object! :D
It's really exciting to think of all the interactive scenes we can create now with this and our architectural and landscape models (and then there's cars, planes, boats....)!
I'm planning a monorail and a submarine soon myself! :D
Way cool stuff!
Thanks for the link!

Yes there is a video from Roman in the Captains blog
http://www.caligari.com/news/news_se...5_PE200609.wmv
It shows you how to build a house with the new inference guides
and snapping - very much like sketchup does only that very important
features are missing (pen tool ..... snapping from libraries etc. )
Truespace uses boxmodellling in the video -not drawing lines with a
pen like I mentioned .
Hello
The link to this video doesn't work but I know I have seen this video somewhere else on this forum. I can't seem to find it now. Can anybody point me in the right direction please.

Hi Gavin, welcome to the forums! :)
Sorry I don't know where that video went, but I'm sure if you drop an e-mail to Customer Service at Caligari they could probably find it for you, and that's really your best option.
Sometimes the video file links get switched around when new Caligari promotions are up against a deadline so I'm sure it was just an oversight in the midst of getting all the new software and updates out.
Hope that helps anyway,

Hi 3dv dude
Thanks for that and thanks for the welcome. I haven't use trueSpace for a few years. I used to be a member of these forums but they seem to have archived my previous posts and identity so I registered again.
I have just upgraded to ts7.5 from ts6. From my limited use so far I am finding it a bit of a challenge but one that I am enjoying (most the time).

My pleasure. I guess I'm the "newbie" among us then, I used trueSpace since Version1 but only dabbled with it really, mostly for raytrace rendering. I have been 3d modeling with many programs for years though... too many years! It wasn't until this last February that I sprung for TS6.6 and have since upped to 7.51 with Vray. With this latest version though you may have noticed most of us here feel like "newbies!" So many nice changes, so little time!
Well ~welcome back~ then Gavin!
I assume that since this is your first post here under your new identity, and you chose to make it in an Architectural-related thread, that you have some interest in this stuff then... are you into architectural design modeling professionally or just checking it out?
I went to trade school in it and used to work in the field for years as well, but my primary current interest lies in it's potential applications within massively multi-user online virtual worlds. A growth industry in my opinion.;)
Sorry about the video though and I wish you luck on that!

Hi
I am primarily a programmer but have previously used trueSpace where I have wanted some 3D in my applications.
The typical thing I used to do was this sort of thing for a computer based training application:
http://www.virtualcaledonia.com/vcrad/vsi.jpg
With an animated version here:
http://www.dotnetwebs.co.uk/wbt/Support/vsi.avi
Like you my current interest in trueSpace lies in a bit of an experiment in the 'virtual world' area. An this is why I have made my first post in an architecture thread.
I have a Microsoft Virtual Earth application that is in its infancy:
http://www.virtualhorsham.co.uk
This is used to drive traffic to:
http://www.visithorsham.co.uk
I am hoping that Virtual Earth will soon accommodate custom 3D objects within its application (in a similar way to Google Earth). I am experimenting with a few basic models of local buildings. I have no architectural training whatsoever but only really require simple models at this stage.
Thanks for your interest. I hope it is OK to post so many links but it is the easiest way to explain my interest.

Fascinating stuff! Thanks for sharing it with us here. Links - no problem, glad you did! Nice animation too. The Microsoft Virtual Earth program concept is also very interesting to me. A very big project to tackle for sure.
There's a very recent thread here started by "Om1nous" that's related to this indirectly. It's something you really should join in with, I'm sure you'd find it fascinating - here's the link:
http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=3391
Does MS Virtual Earth utilize DX9 or DX10 Shaders for it's architectural models as an option? If so, the potential with TS7.51 in tandem with that is very interesting indeed.
If MS Virtual Earth does not implement user-designed structures soon you could always round up some investors and do it yourself too! The potential of actually making that happen was a pipe dream a few years ago, but not anymore at all. Investors are easy to find now, the real key now is finding the right ones.;)
Glad you dropped in here... you got my business blood pumping again! ;)
Drop back again anytime,

Thanks for the link. There are certainly many interesting threads on this forum and I am looking forward to spending more time here while I try to get to grips with the latest version of trueSpace.
Currently only Microsoft can add buildings to the Virtual Earth environment so I am unaware of the full specifications of this capability but the Virtual Earth control utilises DirectX 9 so it has a lot of potential.
Here is an introduction article to Virtual Earth that includes a simple screen shot of the buildings currently available in the Seattle area:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/07/03/EndBracket/default.aspx (it’s worth installing the VE browser plug in and navigating to Seattle to get a proper look).
I believe that Microsoft will eventually allow custom 3D buildings to be loaded into Virtual Earth applications. There have certainly been enough of us asking for this on the MSDN forums. You can already create simple 2D overlays as this (very simple) example demonstrates:

Again this is an experiment used to assess the potential to drive traffic to our Visit Horsham (http://www.visithorsham.co.uk) site. I think the potential for ‘Virtual’, 3D buildings in commercial websites is huge and I am very excited by it.
It’s great to find this forum is full of talented, helpful and like minded people and I am sure I will learn a lot from it.

Well it does look interesting for sure Gavin, and I too: "think the potential for ‘Virtual’, 3D buildings in commercial websites is huge and I am very excited by it."
As you get re-acquainted with folks here at the forums you'll also find in time that several of us here are already similarly involved independently in captalizing on various commercial virtual web construction projects.
In my own sphere this currently entails the simultaneous and ongoing creation of numerous small "satellite partnership projects" worldwide for the establishment and development of virtual construction and re-construction efforts through MMO meetingplaces and activities, although web sites of various types are certainly an integral part of each project as well.
Several others here are currently planning to utilize Caligari's free "truePlay" software (as am I) to introduce business prospects (in a highly immersive manner) to the fantastic potentials inherent in having their own customized (per prospect) virtual immersive models (cities) and interactive activities for their clientelle. Some are developing adjuncts in this manner to their own existing web presence while others are seeking to establish entirely new types of presence for others through this capability.
All of us with trueSpace7.5x are now capable of creating our own unique and fully immersive 3D First-Person Active and Interactive Environments, and with Caligari's introduction of the free standalone "truePlay" software worldwide (enabling anyone to easily and immersively navigate and interactively experience these environments, whether on their hard drive, a CD, or an MMO Server) the future for the farsighted and ambitious among us is very bright indeed.
As you develop your own enhancement to the MS Virtual project. if there's anything we can do to help don't hesitate to ask. It's a bright future ahead of us and we're all in that together here.;)
All the best,

Hi truePlay looks very interesting
I have just tried to login using TS and the TP client but keep getting this message:
"Nick name is wrong or already exists".
In contrast if I deliberately put the 'wrong' login details in I get "Bad login name or password".
Do you have to register separately for a truePlay ID (the website seems to imply that you should be able to login using your existing customer id)
