Hi Rich,
This QTVR Movie you made here is really cool. Excellent spot you chose for this panorama by the way, after looking around at this scene It almost hurts that I can't take a few steps around in there and start exploring further!:)
It is a dream of mine also... I want to be able to wander around and explore an environment. This is where programs like PSCS3, VTour, Image Modeler and TrueSpace are needed.
I am presently pushing VTour around and trying to find ways to fit it into a workflow like this... not too sure of it's value though. Like other RealViz programs I have used (not including Stitcher or MatchMover) it has some problems and quirks...
TS does a nice job with cubic panos though. I am looking at making the photoreal textures as I have described previously and than adding those items into a cubic pano inside TS... hopefully into TP in the future...
The great holy grail of 3D... making a completely immersive environment that you are able to walk into and interact with.
The original pano was over 96 pictures taken from an 8mega pixel camera (I shoot with a Canon 30D and a 17mm wide angle lens). The full size and resolution pano comes in at 171Mb's :D. The one you see here is only 1.1 Mb's...
I'm glad you enjoyed it though, I figured if anyone of this forum would, it would be you. Thanks for the comments!
:)

My pleasure, just keep this stuff coming! :D
When you say "TS does a nice job with cubic panos" that's a feature I'm not really familiar with in TrueSpace and I wonder if you could elaborate a tad more on that.
I've used Urban Velkavrh's "u/v Projection 1.0" ( http://uvworx.com ) for cubic scene creation in TS before, but it was quite a while ago when I played with that and don't really recall whether I was able to use it well in TS at all. Is this similar to the approach you are using with TS cubic scenes?

Hi folks,
I ran across a very fascinating resource online today that I think all of you may find very helpful in your own Architectural Visualization ("archviz") studies and/or projects. It's hosted online by CGArchitect.com.
This is definitely a great resource for folks considering the startup of any architectural visualization-oriented business, and of course it follows that these same resources are very handy for anyone considering the startup of any Virtual 3D Site Construction or Reconstruction business as well. It is called "The Visualization INSIDER - Real World Production Tips & Tricks."
From their related page:
3DAS - 3D Architectural Solutions, presents 26 weeks of insider secrets delving into the world of professional architectural visualization. Authors of the recent title: Foundation 3ds Max 8 Architectural Visualization, Brian Smith and Brian Zajac bring you a weekly fix of tips and tricks published every Friday!
This free resource is now online at the following URL (scroll down the page there) and it provides many free but extremely valuable related PDF files and also (max format) scene zips.
http://www.cgarchitect.com/upclose/VI/default.asp (http://www.cgarchitect.com/upclose/VI/default.asp)
Here's a related Subject Sampling:

This is a suite of applications that is worth keeping an eye on. Realviz (realviz.com) is making VTour 1.2, Stitcher 5.6 and Photomatrix (hdrsoft.com) available is a suite. I am presently using the standalone verisons of all of these programs.
Stitcher allows you to create a 360 degree pano of a site. Vtour you can convert the 2D QTVR into a 3D version. Stitcher and VTour can each work with HDR images now, and with the addition of Photomatrix you can do even more HDR editing than before. This is a very cool package (not sure of the price, but it is going to be up there I am sure)...

These are a couple of buildings I made in VTour. I go on photo shoots all of the time looking for neat building to populate my 3d worlds. These are a few recent examples.
The combination of VTour, Photoshop CS3 Extended and TrueSpace allows me to create detailed realtime worlds. With volumetric clouds, particles and water moving in Realtime TP would make an outstanding place for these models to live :)

...my current interest in trueSpace lies in a bit of an experiment in the 'virtual world' area. An this is why I have made my first post in an architecture thread.
I have a Microsoft Virtual Earth application that is in its infancy:
http://www.virtualhorsham.co.uk
This is used to drive traffic to:
http://www.visithorsham.co.uk
I am hoping that Virtual Earth will soon accommodate custom 3D objects within its application (in a similar way to Google Earth). I am experimenting with a few basic models of local buildings. I have no architectural training whatsoever but only really require simple models at this stage...
Well the Microsoft takeover certainly took my by surprise!
I know many people have their reservations but I am very excited about the future for my projects. :)

Wow, this poor old thread required a huge amount of cleaning and dusting off... I wish Mark was still around, he would have this thread shiny and clean with loads of new content, ideas and just plain interesting exchanges of ideas...
:banana::banana: Here's to you Mark where ever you may be...
What's new in the archviz world... AutoDesk bought out Realviz some months back, many presumed that would be the end of Stitcher, ImageModeller and VTour. Turns out AutoDesk is working on updating at least 2 of these programs Stitcher 2009 and ImageModeler 2009, Vtour appears to be integrated into ImageModeler 2009...
I don't know exactly what this means, I am standing on the sidelines and wondering as much as anyone how this will effect this potentially wonderful program... http://imagemodeler.realviz.com/photomodeling-software-products/imagemodeler/demonstration-software.html
These videos if they represent the full potential of the new program are very encouraging indeed. This would be a nice big step in the right direction...
The price tag is steep though, around 1000.00 USD. The upgrade is going for 480.00 USD... Not chump change by any means... That is a great series of videos though...

Before I did my disappearing act some months back, I posted some messages in another thread where a member was doing some creative camera mapping in TS... I was asked what programs I use... Simple enough, I can list a couple and hopefully post some small images to show examples of what to expect.
Cinema 4D v9.6XL, yea, I know, the sworn enemy of TS :D, but it has some interesting projection tools that make projection modeling much easier than what is available in TS.
PhotoShop CS3Extended... inside this huge example of overblown features is one tool that may not be the best thing since sliced bread... but for me it comes very close. Vanishing Point Filter in PSCS3E allows you to take a 2D image and using projection grids and some very basic calibration tools create either a flat plane, or a series of flat plains that can be exported in a 3D format to be used in a 3D application like TrueSpace.
After Effects CS3... You can load those same 3D files you created in PSCS3E in AE, or you can just use flat image to representgeometry. These you place in 3D space in AE and you can make simple pull in or pull out shots that can very very convincing.
VTour... I've talked about this one some, and it is pretty good at what it mdid. Take a 2D image where you had something in projection and than using some calibration techniques define that building in 3D space, generate some geometry, place the textures on it and you had a pretty convincing building model that worked very well from the projected view of the picture.
ImageModeler... VTour type ide, but you need to make pictures of the complete building from many different angles covering 100% of the building. With cad percision calibration tools you than calibrated all of the major corners of the building and than from those points made geometry for the building. Than you extracted textures and placed them on the model. This is not a trivial process and it could take a signicant amount of time to get a model generated this way.
TrueSpace 7.6... You can do a decent job of projecting and modeling background in TS, you needed to place your image on a plane and than using the modeling tools in WS fold, crave, scalp the plane into your 3D model...
Except for the above mentione4d C4D, none of these are true systems for creating projection modeling, they are very workable examples...
What's your thoughts (no Mark to get all excited by this post... hoping that this might start some dialog from others with experience trying to work this technique into TS)

Thanks Rich.
I just read through this entire thread. I've been really impressed by the examples you've posted, both here and in previous threads. I recently upgraded to Photoshop CS3E but haven't had a chance to even look at the Vanising Point filter.
Now I'm really anxious to try this out. :) |

http://blogs.msdn.com/photosynth/
Photosynth from MS, these tool has been in development for several years now that I am aware of.
Take a bunch of pictures from a site and bring them into Photosynth, ity more than a pano tool, it's more than just a 3D creation tool. Check out the demo and the videos of what is possible. It's an amazing tool.

The CS3 series of Abobe is quite powerful now and the tools in Photoshop CSE are just magnificent for 3D and video.
Heck, in Adobe After Effects, there is a 'puppet tool' that let's you pin and restrict parts of 2D artwork and animate them, just like a professional cartoonist would. If fact, I have a DVD I purchased that shows me just how a professional cartoonist does that with AE. :) |

I dl'ed the Sketchup plugins to let you import and export obj files, these will come in handy for some fun work I am sure. Sketchup is a tool that should be in everyone's tool kit, the free version has much of the functionality of the pro version. Model archviz is a breeze in it... and it is just cool :)
Rich
I can only second this and ad that it works well with truespace too !

Both directions !
Plus there is a new program called Bonzai that is 100 % Sketchup compatible that is coming out soon !
This is from the form z people....

Glad to point you to some news as Bonzai will be fully compatible with Sketchup !
I realy would love to see that Caligari and Microsoft understand that -
and I can only talk about myself as a customer - we are interested in
looking at 3d as a whole. What I get from the last interview from
3d World mag there is a race going on to what system has the nose in front
and that Truespace is a much more capable and flexible piece of software
but I see it as comparing apples with oranges.I´d love to see the 2 worlds
grow together. I´d see as beneficial for both worlds to have the Google universe (Google Earth) and the Microsoft ( Virtual Earth) grow together
and to see lots of comunications including the file formats to one another.
Would any of you guys want to see 2 internets that are not compatible ?
Same with Virtual worlds !
I looked at photosynth the other day and thought what a wonderfull
piece of tool but what about file formats ?
How can we import that information to use it as a WORLD for use in Truespace and its wonderfull animation and rigging tools ?

This is nothing more than playing around and getting quick results. I went on a photo shoot today and I ran into an old cemetery. They had a nice assortment of old grave stones and a few old above ground crypts. This is a picture of one of them that I extracted the texture in PSCS3 with. I brought it into TS and just did some very quick modeling using the "ADD EDGES Tool", I bet it took about 20 minutes to bring in the texture add it to a primitive and than quickly cut it up and than DynaSweep out the cuts. I need to go in a correct the swept faces for UV's but it is almost mgood enough right now...
Let's see what some of the other tools I have around here can do.

I didn't want this thread too fall to far into the depths of the forums.
This si the beginning of a new project. I took some pictures a year or more ago that I uncovered yesterday. They were some random pictures from a stone church. I took some pictures of the windows, doors and some of the stone. I want to work a complete workflow in TS and using the Gimp as a texture tool and see how it goes.
The picture is one of the windows, I had a series of them strung together to make a nice entranceway for my Gothic Church. If you extrapulate a bit you will be able to see clearly how this was done. TS works very nicely with a simple high resolution texture and some basic modeling as I have pointed out several times already. This is no different I just plan to do my modeling in pieces from simple textures that any digital camera can do. I was using a Canon 30D 8megapoixel camera for these shots.
The first step...
Hope you enjoy

This is a snapshot of a realtime rendering from WS side. This scene is modeled from some pictures I clipped from the net. The background mountains are the Grand Titons, some random trees, part of the great wall of china, and a random stone doorway. The pictures were not the great resolution so I did not want to spoend a bunch of time creating displacements for them. I made some random animations form it to see what TS would allow me to do... but I have a bunch more to learn before I will be confident with what I am doing.
This is a fun little exercise though.
